To make OBS use fewer computer resources during a nonstop YouTube stream, start with a supported hardware encoder, then lower the stream’s output resolution or frame rate if your content allows it, and simplify demanding scenes. These changes can reduce CPU, GPU, rendering, or encoding workload—but they do not guarantee lower electrical consumption. OBS and YouTube do not establish a universal watt or percentage saving; measure your own system under comparable conditions if electricity use is the metric.

What “less power” can—and cannot—mean

OBS guidance describes ways to reduce the work your CPU, GPU, renderer, or encoder must do. Less workload may help a computer run a stream more comfortably, but it is not the same as a measured reduction in watts. Hardware encoding, for example, moves encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component; the total system’s electrical draw depends on the computer and workload.

If you need to verify energy use, compare system power with a meter or other reliable measurement method under like-for-like conditions: same content, scene, resolution, frame rate, audio, and measurement period. No universal watt or percentage saving is established for the settings below.

Reduce OBS workload in the order that matters

1. Try an available hardware encoder

Open Settings → Output in OBS and choose a supported hardware encoder for streaming if one is available. OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance because it shifts video encoding from the CPU to a specialized component. Available choices depend on your computer and operating system: OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC and AMD AMF on Windows and Linux, Intel Quick Sync on Windows and Linux, and Apple VideoToolbox on Apple Silicon. Check current OBS compatibility for your actual system.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Compare the hardware encoder with x264 on your own stream. x264 uses the CPU for software encoding; a hardware encoder can reduce CPU workload, but older hardware encoders may produce lower image quality than x264 at the same bitrate. Compatibility, quality at your chosen bitrate, stream stability, and measured system power all depend on your setup, so there is no universal winner.

2. Lower output resolution before changing the canvas

Go to Settings → Video and reduce Output (Scaled) Resolution to the quality your viewers and content need. Lowering OBS’s output resolution can reduce GPU resources and encoder load. Keep Base (Canvas) Resolution unchanged unless resources are severely constrained: changing the canvas can affect source sizing and scene management without being the first adjustment to try.

3. Use 30 fps if 60 fps is not needed

In Settings → Video, set Common FPS Values to 30 if 60 fps is unnecessary or unstable. Fewer frames reduce rendering and encoding work; 60 fps is more demanding than 30 fps. The trade-off is motion smoothness, so choose based on the material: fast gameplay may benefit from 60 fps, while a slower-moving video may not need it. Test rather than assuming 30 fps is right for every stream.

4. Simplify scenes and sources

Remove sources, filters, animations, and browser overlays that do not materially improve the stream. OBS notes that sources can consume resources even when hidden, and browser sources and filters can be demanding. Also avoid feeding a source at a much higher resolution than its displayed size requires when a suitable lower-resolution version is available.

Set YouTube-compatible bitrate and keyframes

Use the YouTube live encoder settings that match your resolution, frame rate, and codec. The figures below are YouTube recommendations, not targets for reducing power. For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Leave upload headroom: YouTube recommends 20% network capacity margin. Actual stability depends on your connection, so test the stream rather than treating a bitrate recommendation as a guarantee.

Output Codec YouTube recommended live bitrate
720p30 H.264 8 Mbps
720p30 AV1 or H.265 6 Mbps
1080p30 H.264 14 Mbps
1080p30 AV1 or H.265 10 Mbps

These recommendations are from YouTube’s live encoder settings, accessed in 2026. Use the matching row for your configuration; do not apply a bitrate from one codec or resolution to another by default.

Test the actual nonstop workload

  1. Make one change at a time. Start with the encoder, then test resolution, frame rate, and scene simplification as separate adjustments. This helps identify which change affects quality or stability.
  2. Use representative content. Test with the audio and motion your stream will actually contain. A static scene may not reveal problems that appear during fast gameplay, animated overlays, or complex transitions.
  3. Watch OBS and YouTube together. Check OBS rendering and encoding indicators and YouTube’s stream health after each change. A computer meeting OBS’s minimum requirements does not guarantee that a particular resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene combination will work reliably.
  4. Verify power independently if needed. Compare measured system power over equivalent periods and workloads. Keep the test conditions consistent; a change in content or scene complexity can make a before-and-after comparison misleading.

Plan around YouTube’s archive limit

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If keeping a complete archive matters, plan session boundaries or make a local backup and verify that the local file is growing. A simultaneous recording adds workload to the computer, so test that separately before relying on it during a long stream.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • OBS reports rendering or encoding strain: Lower Output (Scaled) Resolution or frame rate, simplify scenes, and test a supported hardware encoder. Change one item at a time so you can see which adjustment helps.
  • Hardware encoding is missing or unavailable: Encoder options depend on the platform and device. Check OBS compatibility for your computer and operating system; do not assume every listed encoder is available on every system.
  • The stream looks worse after switching encoders: Compare x264 and the available hardware encoder at the same YouTube-compatible bitrate and output settings. Older hardware encoders can deliver lower quality at the same bitrate.
  • YouTube reports unstable stream health: Check that the bitrate matches the selected codec and output, use CBR for RTMP/RTMPS, set a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and preserve the recommended 20% upload headroom. Test the connection under the real streaming workload.
  • A long stream is missing from archives: A YouTube stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use session boundaries or a local backup if a complete recording matters, and confirm that any local recording file continues to grow.
  • System power does not fall after reducing OBS workload: That result does not necessarily mean the configuration failed. OBS workload indicators are not watt measurements; use a consistent, direct power measurement to establish whether the computer draws less electricity.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a nonstop YouTube video stream rather than keeping OBS running on your own computer, StreamNeo is a cloud service for uploaded videos and playlists. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud service loops the video, so nothing has to stay on at home. It does not go live from a camera.
