YouTube Analytics shows what happened on your channel—how viewers found your videos, how long they watched, and whether they returned. Use those reports to spot patterns and choose experiments, not to treat one metric as proof of why a video succeeded or failed. Start with a goal, compare like with like, and judge progress against your own channel’s history.
YouTube Studio’s interface has been changing gradually since July 2026, so report names or layouts may differ between accounts. The guidance below uses YouTube’s current report names; Analytics is also available in the YouTube apps, though some reports may not appear on mobile. What does growth mean for your channel?
Before opening a report, decide what you want to improve. “Growth” might mean more people discovering your videos, viewers watching for longer, a larger returning audience, or higher revenue if your channel is eligible. YouTube’s channel-health guidance emphasizes that your goals and business aspirations determine what success means.
- Discoverability: look at impressions, thumbnail click-through rate (CTR), traffic sources, and search terms.
- Viewer satisfaction and viewing depth: examine watch time, average view duration, engaged views, and retention.
- Audience development: track new, casual, and regular viewers, subscriber gains, and format overlap where available.
- Business outcome: include revenue if the report is available and it matches your goal.
YouTube says there is no universal good CTR benchmark and no single most important metric. A useful scorecard is small, tied to your objective, and compared with your own historical performance rather than an unsupported industry target. Where do you find YouTube Analytics?
Channel-level reports
In YouTube Studio, select Analytics from the left-hand menu to see a channel overview and reports across your channel.
Individual-video reports
In Studio, open Content, select a video, then open its Analytics. Start with Overview for a high-level view, then choose the report that fits your question. Depending on availability, the relevant reports include Content, Reach, Engagement, Audience, Revenue, and Trends. Trends can surface audience searches and content gaps. YouTube’s interface update has been rolling out gradually since July 2026, so your labels or layout may differ.
How is your channel doing? Start with the report that answers the question
Use the overview to see the broad picture, then narrow the investigation. Reach and discovery reports show how people found a video; engagement and retention show how viewing unfolded; Audience reports help describe who watched and whether they returned. Some audience and traffic data may be limited, and not every report is available on every device.

Reach: how did viewers find the video?
In Reach, inspect impressions, impressions click-through rate, views, unique viewers, traffic sources, and watch time. Traffic sources can include YouTube Search, browse features, suggested videos, external sources, and other categories. YouTube defines thumbnail CTR as how often viewers watched after seeing a thumbnail. It describes a relationship between thumbnail impressions and watching; it is not a stand-alone quality score.
When diagnosing discovery, read CTR alongside impressions, the resulting views, and watch time. For example, a CTR change alone does not tell you whether a video reached a different audience or whether its viewing experience changed. Compare with your own videos or a relevant historical period before deciding whether to test a different thumbnail or topic. YouTube’s Reach report guidance explains the report’s discovery measures.
Engagement: how long did people watch?
Use Engagement to review watch time, average view duration, engaged views, and the audience-retention curve. The graph can reveal where viewers start or stop watching and where attention rises or falls. A dip around a long introduction, for instance, can suggest a hypothesis to test in a later video—such as getting to the promised answer sooner. It does not prove that the introduction caused the dip.

Highlighted retention moments are not guaranteed to appear. YouTube says a video should be at least 60 seconds long and have at least 100 views to be eligible for highlighted key moments; highlights appear only when detected. YouTube’s retention guidance describes how to read the graph and its highlighted moments.
Audience: who watches, and who comes back?
Audience reports distinguish new, casual, and regular viewers. Pair these measures with reach: broad exposure and returning-viewer habits describe different parts of channel development. The monthly audience figure is not a calendar-month total. YouTube calculates it daily from unique viewers over the preceding 28 days, so it is a rolling window. If you are eligible and revenue is relevant to your goal, use the Revenue report where available. Trends can help identify searches from your audience and possible content gaps. Neither report replaces the basic diagnostic: identify the goal first, then choose a measure that reflects it.

How can you compare videos without drawing the wrong conclusion?
Advanced Mode in YouTube Studio lets you select date ranges, breakdowns, metrics, and filters; compare videos, groups, playlists, and time periods; and save or export reports. A group can contain up to 500 videos, playlists, or channels. YouTube’s examples include comparing performance during a video’s first 24 hours, 7 days, or 28 days. Choose a window suited to the question and compare videos at the same point in their life cycle where possible.

To ask whether your channel is growing compared with this time last year, use a comparable date range in Advanced Mode and examine the same goal-relevant measures. YouTube gives zooming out to at least 90 days as an example of looking for broader trends; that is guidance, not a universal rule or benchmark. A before-and-after comparison can show that a change and a result occurred together, but it cannot establish by itself that the change caused the result. YouTube’s Advanced Mode guidance covers comparisons, groups, saved reports, and exports.
Keep a simple experiment log
- Write down the change you plan to make: for example, topic, format, thumbnail treatment, or upload schedule.
- Record the intended outcome and the measure that reflects it.
- Choose a meaningful review window, such as a comparable first-week period, and note relevant seasonality or context.
- Review the report and decide what to test next. Treat the result as evidence for a follow-up experiment, not proof of a single cause.
Am I on the right track?
Ask whether the measures linked to your goal are moving in a useful direction over a suitable timeframe. If you want more discovery, check impressions and traffic sources as well as CTR. If you want deeper viewing, inspect watch time and retention. If you want a returning audience, look at new, casual, and regular viewers. No one measure answers every version of “How is my channel doing?” YouTube recommends using your historical metrics and zooming out to see broader patterns rather than chasing a universal target.
