You can’t create a new NDI stream with Skype consumer: Microsoft retired it on May 5, 2025. Skype for Content Creators once offered NDI output for podcast calls, but the current evidence does not establish its exact historic setup steps. For a present-day route, NDI documents output from the new Microsoft Teams client on Windows; whether Teams Free accounts can use it is not confirmed, so check your account’s eligibility before planning a recording around it.
What happened to Skype’s NDI podcast workflow?
Skype for Content Creators supported sending call feeds as NDI outputs, making it useful for bringing a remote guest into a podcast production setup. That is now a legacy workflow, not a setup you can newly follow in Skype consumer. Microsoft Support gives May 5, 2025 as the retirement date; Microsoft Lifecycle lists May 6, 2025, displayed in Pacific Time. Microsoft’s retirement notice and its Lifecycle record use those respective dates.
Microsoft directed Skype users to Microsoft Teams Free. That does not by itself establish that Teams Free accounts can send NDI: NDI’s documented procedure is for the new Teams client on Windows, and does not confirm consumer-account eligibility. Treat Teams as a possible current route only after verifying that NDI output is available to your specific account.
What NDI does in a podcast setup
NDI is an IP-based technology for sending and receiving audio and video between compatible software and devices over a network. It is a connectivity ecosystem, not a podcast-calling app or a recording workflow by itself. A typical arrangement has a calling app supplying a guest feed, NDI carrying that media over the network, and production software receiving it for recording or mixing. NDI describes its technology and workflows at What is NDI?

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
NDI’s creator material names OBS Studio, Streamlabs, and vMix as integrations. Compatibility depends on the current versions of the calling client, NDI components, and receiver software, so confirm the documentation for the exact versions you plan to use rather than assuming every combination works. NDI’s content-creation page describes its creator workflows.
Current documented route: Teams NDI on Windows
NDI documents a procedure for enabling NDI in the new Microsoft Teams client on Windows. The broad sequence is to install the additional NDI files, enable NDI in Teams’ app permissions, then turn on Broadcast over NDI during a call. The exact labels or availability can change; follow the current Microsoft Teams NDI instructions and check whether your account is eligible before relying on the feature.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Verify access first. Confirm that the Teams account and client you will use expose NDI broadcasting. The documented Windows steps do not establish that Teams Free consumer accounts qualify.
- Install the required NDI files. Use the installation instructions from NDI and download the installer for your operating system only from the official NDI Tools page. That page listed version 6.3.2 on October 3, 2026; check the live page because software versions change.
- Enable NDI permission in Teams. In the new Teams client, use the documented App Permissions controls to allow NDI. Follow the current Microsoft instructions for the exact UI path.
- Start the call and enable its NDI broadcast. Turn on Broadcast over NDI for that call. This is a per-call action in the documented workflow, separate from the permission setting.
- Receive the guest feed in production software. Select the NDI source in a compatible receiver such as OBS Studio, Streamlabs, or vMix, following that application’s current NDI instructions. Confirm that the expected guest audio and video appear before recording.
Network and quality considerations
NDI carries media over an IP network, so the sending and receiving devices need a network path that allows them to see one another. An existing suitable network may be enough; a new cable is not a universal requirement. Ethernet is an option when you want a wired layout, and NDI lists Cat6 cable among creator accessories. NDI advertises formats up to 4K 60fps in 10-bit HDR, but that is a vendor description, not a measured guarantee for a particular computer, network, Teams account, or receiver. NDI’s creator purchasing page describes supported formats and accessories.
- Check that both devices are connected to the intended network and that local network or firewall settings are not blocking discovery or media traffic.
- Test the complete call-to-receiver path before inviting a guest or recording an important episode.
- Use a wired Ethernet connection if it suits your setup; do not buy a capture card solely to receive NDI.
Podcast recording, copyright, and guest consent
NDI transports media; it does not itself determine whether you have permission to record, publish, or monetize a guest’s contribution. Agree with guests on recording and publication, and make sure any music, clips, images, or other material in the episode is cleared for your intended use. A live call or an NDI connection does not grant rights to copyrighted material.

If you later use a prerecorded episode as a continuous YouTube live stream, review YouTube’s current copyright and reused-content rules as well as the rights for every element in the recording. A technical connection or successful broadcast does not guarantee that a channel’s content meets platform policies.
Troubleshooting the current workflow
- No NDI option in Teams: Check that you are using the new Teams client on Windows, installed the additional NDI files, and enabled NDI under App Permissions. If the option remains absent, confirm account eligibility with current Microsoft guidance; Teams Free support is not established by the documented procedure.
- The receiver cannot see the call feed: Confirm that Broadcast over NDI is enabled for the active call, both computers are on an appropriate network, and the receiving software version supports the installed NDI components.
- Video appears but audio does not: Check the receiver’s selected audio source and routing, then verify the call’s audio is being exposed to NDI. Test with a short call before recording a full episode.
- Feed is unstable or delayed: Check network conditions and competing network use on both devices. NDI’s advertised maximum format is not a promise that every local network can sustain it.
- Setup instructions don’t match your screen: Software labels and versions change. Consult the current Microsoft and NDI documentation rather than relying on old Skype menus or screenshots.
Or let it run in the cloud
