SRT ingest is not the same as sending a stream directly to YouTube. SRT is a transport protocol commonly used to carry video from a remote encoder or production site to an SRT-capable receiver. That receiver must then forward the feed to YouTube using a supported route, such as RTMPS or HLS. YouTube’s public setup guides reviewed for this article document RTMP(S) and HLS workflows, but not a direct SRT URL and stream-key setup. That describes the published guidance, not proof that no private or limited SRT option exists.
What SRT ingest means for a YouTube stream
Think of a live video route as two separate connections:
- Contribution: A camera, encoder, or production location sends video over SRT to an SRT-enabled receiver or relay.
- YouTube delivery: The receiver or relay sends the feed onward using a YouTube-supported ingest protocol, typically RTMPS, or HLS where appropriate.
SRT is designed to help transport video across networks affected by packet loss, jitter, congestion, or changing bandwidth. It does not by itself make YouTube an SRT destination. OBS documents sending to a custom SRT URL, but that is not documentation for a YouTube SRT endpoint. See Haivision’s SRT overview for the protocol’s role in contribution workflows and OBS’s SRT guide for its custom-destination setup.
For a video-games channel, this arrangement can make sense when gameplay or commentary is produced remotely and an SRT receiver at another location is responsible for the final YouTube output. If you are streaming from one encoder directly to your channel, the SRT contribution hop is usually unnecessary; use the encoder’s YouTube RTMPS workflow instead.

Does YouTube Live support direct SRT ingest?
YouTube’s public setup documentation reviewed here explains RTMP(S) and HLS, including the relevant stream URL and key workflows. It does not describe a direct SRT destination with an SRT URL and key. Treat that as a statement about the published setup guidance, not a universal claim that no channel-specific or limited offering could exist. Check YouTube’s current Live Control Room and official help if your account presents a newer option.
The practical rule is simple: do not paste an SRT URL into YouTube’s server URL field. An SRT source needs a reachable SRT receiver or relay, and that system needs to output a protocol YouTube supports. YouTube’s public encoder guidance recommends RTMPS for the conventional route. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide and RTMPS instructions.

Choose the right route
| Route | Use it when | Setup | Latency and format notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTMPS | You are streaming from a compatible encoder directly to YouTube. | Enter the RTMPS server URL and YouTube stream key in the encoder. | YouTube recommends RTMPS for the standard encoder workflow. |
| HLS | Your workflow needs HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP, and your encoder supports HLS. | Create an HLS stream key and use the HTTPS URL. The encoder must meet YouTube’s HLS requirements. | YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Its guide requires TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT; byte-range requests are not supported. |
| SRT contribution followed by RTMPS or HLS | A remote SRT-enabled source needs to reach a separate production receiver or relay. | Configure the SRT sender and receiver, then configure the receiver’s output for YouTube. | SRT’s configured transport buffer is not the same as end-to-end viewing latency. The public YouTube setup pages reviewed do not provide direct SRT ingest instructions. |
YouTube’s HLS requirements and latency warning are in its HLS setup guide. For HDR workflows, consult YouTube’s HDR streaming guidance and encoder settings guidance before choosing a route.

- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or select the stream you intend to use. In the stream settings, locate the stream URL and stream key.
- Choose the encrypted URL. YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default. Select or reveal the RTMPS URL if you want the encoder-to-ingest connection encrypted.
- Enter the credentials in your encoder. Select its YouTube preset if available; otherwise paste the RTMPS URL into the server field and the stream key into the key field. Keep the key private.
- Match the encoder output to YouTube’s guidance. Choose a supported resolution, frame rate, video codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval for your stream. Use the current YouTube encoder settings guide for the settings appropriate to your resolution and frame rate; do not assume one bitrate fits every game, frame rate, or connection.
- Start the encoder and check the incoming preview. Confirm that Live Control Room receives the feed and that audio and video look correct before starting the public broadcast.
YouTube’s step-by-step instructions for copying the stream URL and key are in its encoder setup guide. Exact labels can change, so use the current Live Control Room interface if a menu name differs.
How to send an SRT source to YouTube through a relay
This is a protocol-level workflow: the sender and receiver must agree on connection settings, and the receiver must be configured to forward a compatible output. The sources cited here do not establish one universal relay product or tested configuration.

- Set up an SRT-capable receiver. Decide where the production receiver or relay will run, and confirm it can accept the incoming SRT feed and produce RTMPS or HLS output.
- Configure the source encoder. Set it to send SRT to the receiver’s address and port. Sender and receiver need compatible connection details, including caller or listener mode and latency buffer. Ensure the receiver is reachable through the relevant firewall and network configuration.
- Configure the relay’s YouTube output. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and key for the selected output protocol. Enter the RTMPS destination in the relay for a conventional stream, or use HLS only if the relay and the use case support YouTube’s HLS requirements.
- Match output settings to the chosen route. Configure the relay’s codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe behavior for the selected YouTube ingest path. Do not assume that settings on the SRT contribution link automatically satisfy the relay’s YouTube output requirements.
- Test the whole chain. Confirm the source reaches the receiver, the receiver’s outgoing feed reaches YouTube, and Live Control Room shows a healthy preview. Monitor the source-to-receiver link and the receiver-to-YouTube output separately.
OBS’s SRT guide describes SRT output to a custom destination and its latency controls. Its guide gives a 120 ms default and advises setting latency to at least 2.5 times the encoder-to-ingest round-trip time; the SRT URL parameter is expressed in microseconds. This is OBS configuration advice for the SRT link, not a YouTube end-to-end latency target. See the OBS SRT Protocol Streaming Guide. Haivision’s SRT source guidance also recommends checking whether the network link is oversubscribed and adjusting video bitrate when needed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check when the stream does not work
- YouTube does not accept the destination: Check that you have not entered an SRT URL as YouTube’s server URL. Send SRT to an SRT receiver, then configure the receiver to output RTMPS or HLS.
- The encoder connects but Live Control Room gets no feed: Verify the selected server URL, stream key, and protocol match. If using RTMPS, make sure you copied the RTMPS URL rather than the default RTMP URL.
- The receiver cannot see the SRT source: Confirm caller/listener mode, destination address and port, firewall rules, and public reachability. Both ends must be configured for compatible connection details.
- The feed stutters or drops frames: Check link statistics and available network headroom. If the connection is oversubscribed, reduce the source bitrate or otherwise address the capacity bottleneck.
- The SRT link works but the YouTube preview fails: Troubleshoot the relay’s outgoing YouTube connection separately from the incoming SRT connection. Recheck the YouTube URL and key, output protocol, and encoding settings.
- HLS output is rejected or delayed: Check that the segments are TS and last 1–4 seconds, the playlist is rolling with at most five outstanding segments, and requests use HTTPS POST/PUT. Expect more latency than with RTMP.
- Viewing delay is higher than expected: A low SRT buffer does not guarantee low glass-to-glass or YouTube playback latency. SRT transport latency and YouTube’s ingest and playback behavior are separate parts of the chain.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does SRT encryption make the YouTube stream encrypted too?
Not necessarily. SRT secures or transports the contribution link according to its configuration; the receiver’s separate connection to YouTube must be configured independently, such as with RTMPS.
Can the SRT latency value predict when viewers will see the gameplay?
No. It describes buffering on the SRT transport link, not the full delay through the relay, YouTube ingest, and playback.
