How to Fix Game Crashes and FPS Drops in Streamlabs Desktop

Disable overlays and reduce game load first, then identify whether the problem is FPS loss, skipped or network-dropped frames, a Streamlabs crash, or a capture-source failure.

Start by disabling third-party overlays, then cap the game’s frame rate or lower its graphics settings and retest. Before changing more settings, identify what is actually failing: the game’s frame rate, Streamlabs Desktop, the capture source, or the network. Those problems can look similar but need different fixes.

First, identify the symptom

Watch what happens when the problem appears. A game that runs slowly is not the same as a stream that stutters, Streamlabs Desktop closing unexpectedly, or a black capture preview. Streamlabs separates performance problems into lagged frames, skipped frames and network-related dropped frames; its guidance also treats application crashes and capture failures as separate issues.

What you see Likely area to investigate Start here
The game itself loses FPS or feels choppy Game workload and available GPU headroom Disable overlays, cap FPS or lower graphics settings
The game looks fine, but the stream has lagged frames System resources available to compose frames Reduce game quality or limit its frame output
The stream has skipped frames CPU or encoder load Check CPU usage and encoder settings
The stream drops frames or disconnects Network connection Troubleshoot the network rather than assuming a GPU fault
Streamlabs Desktop closes or crashes Application, drivers, updates or system components Enable crash reporting and collect diagnostics
The game is running, but its preview is black or missing Game Capture source configuration or game compatibility Recreate or change the capture source

These categories can overlap. Change one setting at a time where practical, then repeat the same game or scene test so you can tell whether a change mattered.

Fix game FPS loss or lagged frames

Disable overlays and retest

Third-party overlays can compete with a game and capture software. Streamlabs identifies overlays from GeForce Experience, Discord, Steam, Ubisoft Connect and Origin as possible contributors to FPS loss or instability, particularly when several are active together. Turn off overlays you do not need, then retest before changing other settings. Re-enable them individually later if you want to identify which one is involved.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Streamlabs’ older guidance also mentions Windows 10 Game DVR and Game Bar. Those interface instructions are specific to Windows 10; Windows settings and labels may differ in other versions, so do not assume the same menu path applies to every PC.

Reduce the game’s workload

Temporarily lower demanding in-game graphics settings, enable V-Sync, or set an in-game frame-rate cap. If your display and driver support G-Sync or FreeSync, those are also among the options Streamlabs suggests trying. These are diagnostic workload-reduction steps, not guaranteed fixes. If performance improves, restore settings one by one to find a workable balance between image quality and headroom for streaming.

A game running without an FPS limit can consume resources that Streamlabs needs to capture and compose frames. Limiting the game’s frame output or lowering its quality can leave more room for those tasks. Streamlabs’ performance guidance discusses these measures for lagged frames as well as game-side performance pressure: Game Crashes or FPS Drops with Streamlabs Desktop and Dropped Frames, CPU/GPU Issues, and Improving Stream Quality.

Fix skipped frames and distinguish them from network drops

If Streamlabs reports skipped frames

Check whether CPU usage is high while streaming. If you encode with x264, which uses the CPU, a faster preset may reduce the processing work. If your system and Streamlabs configuration support it, hardware encoding is another option to test. These changes trade encoding workload against other factors, so compare the result in your actual game and stream rather than expecting a universal improvement.

If frames are dropped or the stream disconnects

Investigate the network connection. A network-related drop or disconnection is not, by itself, evidence that the game’s GPU load caused the problem. Avoid changing graphics or buying hardware as a first response to a symptom that points to connectivity. Streamlabs’ guide explains the distinctions between lagged, skipped and dropped frames: Dropped Frames, CPU/GPU Issues, and Improving Stream Quality.

Troubleshoot Streamlabs Desktop crashes

If the application itself closes or crashes, use its crash diagnostics rather than treating the event as ordinary low FPS. Streamlabs’ crash guide was last updated April 25, 2025; labels can change, so verify the current interface if a setting is not where expected.

Fix a black or missing game capture

If the game continues to run but Streamlabs does not show it, troubleshoot the capture source. Some games may not support Game Capture, and a black preview does not mean the game has crashed.

If you use a capture card

Use this branch only when a capture card is part of the setup and its source is stuttering or unavailable. Check whether another application is using the device and review the source settings for that particular device. Streamlabs’ capture-card troubleshooting guide covers device-related issues. A capture card is not a general fix for PC game crashes or FPS drops.

It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
