Streamlabs Desktop is a free-to-start Windows and macOS app for streaming and recording. It brings scenes, capture sources, overlays, alerts, chat tools, and recording controls into one interface. You can begin on its free plan; Streamlabs Ultra is optional and is mainly relevant if you need features such as multistreaming or broader access to overlays and widgets.

What Streamlabs Desktop does

Streamlabs Desktop lets you compose a broadcast or recording from scenes and sources. A scene is the arrangement shown to viewers; sources can include a game or desktop capture, webcam, microphone, images, and overlays. Streamlabs also offers alerts and widgets through its app ecosystem.

Streamlabs says Desktop is built on the OBS engine. That does not make it identical to OBS Studio: Streamlabs combines that engine with its own interface and creator integrations. The distinction matters if you rely on a particular source, plugin, or workflow.

Is Streamlabs Desktop free?

Yes. Streamlabs describes a free plan for basic streaming, with access to popular streaming platforms, free overlay and widget themes, alerts, a tip page, Cloudbot, and limited App Store access. Plan features can change, so confirm what is currently included in the app or on the Streamlabs Ultra page before choosing.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Ultra is a paid option for features including multistreaming to several destinations, wider overlay and widget access, the full app library, a customizable tip page, and higher limits for selected tools. Streamlabs’ page displayed a starting price of $15.75 per month on October 3, 2026; that is a dated page snapshot, not a guaranteed price. Check the current price, billing cadence, regional availability, and cancellation terms before subscribing.

How to set up Streamlabs Desktop

  1. Download and open the app. Use the installer for your operating system. Allow camera and microphone permissions if you intend to use those devices.
  2. Choose your workflow and sign in. Select livestreaming or recording, choose a skill level, then sign in with a Streamlabs ID or a supported streaming account.
  3. Import or start fresh. If you already use OBS Studio, choose the option to import existing scenes and profiles; otherwise start a new configuration. Streamlabs Support’s July 2026 guide says this import can be done in one click, but that does not establish that every plugin or custom setup will transfer compatibly.
  4. Choose a theme and plan. Select a theme or skip it, then choose Starter/free or Ultra. The paid plan is not required to try the core software.
  5. Connect the platform and build a scene. Open the app’s settings to connect your streaming destination. Create a scene, then add the sources you need: game or screen capture, camera, microphone, and overlays. Arrange the sources and check which audio inputs are active.
  6. Check output before going public. Configure output for the destination and intended resolution, then use a private or test stream if the platform offers that option. Confirm the destination account, scene, and audio levels before a public broadcast.

For a spoken stream, choose a microphone in audio settings and check monitoring and room noise before buying equipment. A webcam is only needed if you want an on-camera scene. Console capture cards are relevant to some console-to-PC setups, not a general requirement; compatibility depends on console, resolution, refresh rate, and passthrough needs.

Computer and connection requirements

Streamlabs’ system requirements page, last updated April 8, 2026, lists Windows 11 or macOS 12+ and 8 GB RAM as minimum guidance. For more demanding games or art streams, animated overlays, or advanced plugins, Streamlabs recommends a stronger CPU and GPU, at least 16 GB RAM, a 512 GB SSD, and Ethernet. These are vendor-published recommendations, not independent performance benchmarks.

The same requirements page says upload speed of 3.6 Mbps or better is suitable for 720p at 30 fps on most platforms. Actual bitrate needs vary by platform, resolution, frame rate, and content, so check the destination’s current guidance and test your own connection. Streamlabs’ May 20, 2026 quick-start guide gives a different recommended OS listing—Windows 11 or macOS 13+—so verify compatibility on the current download page before installing.

Streamlabs Desktop vs. OBS Studio

OBS Studio is the clearest desktop alternative. Its official site describes a scene-and-source workflow for combining inputs such as window captures, images, text, browser windows, webcams, and capture cards. Streamlabs says it uses the OBS engine and adds its own interface and creator integrations. Neither product should be assumed to run better or worse on a particular computer without testing that setup.

Decision point Streamlabs Desktop OBS Studio
Workflow Scenes and sources with Streamlabs’ integrated creator tools. Scenes and sources with OBS’s own interface and configuration.
Overlays and alerts Includes Streamlabs alerts, widgets, and overlay options; access varies by plan. Supports scene composition from sources; the cited OBS overview does not establish a matching integrated Streamlabs toolset.
Cost and premium features Free plan available; Ultra adds features such as multistreaming and expanded library access. Not stated on the cited OBS homepage.
Performance No independent same-computer comparison established. No independent same-computer comparison established.

Choose based on the workflow you prefer, whether built-in Streamlabs tools justify Ultra for you, and whether your sources and plugins work as needed. If performance is a concern, try the intended scenes and settings on your own hardware rather than relying on a universal “better” claim.

For uploaded-video looping rather than a live camera or game capture, StreamNeo is the cloud option to consider first: it keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free. Or let it run in the cloud

For a 24/7 YouTube stream built from uploaded videos, StreamNeo avoids leaving a computer running at home. Upload your recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops from the cloud, supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start the free day.

Common setup problems

  • No camera or microphone appears: check that the device is connected, grant the app permission in the operating system, and select the intended input in the scene or audio settings.
  • The wrong image appears on stream: select the intended scene and verify that the game, screen, or window capture source points to the correct target.
  • Viewers cannot hear the intended audio: check the selected microphone and active audio sources, then inspect their levels before going live.
  • An OBS import is incomplete: confirm the correct scenes and profile were selected, then inspect sources individually. The documented one-click import is not a guarantee of compatibility for every plugin or custom component.
  • Stream quality or stability is poor: compare the configured output with platform guidance, check upload capacity under the conditions you will stream, and reduce demanding settings or overlays if the computer struggles. The cited sources do not establish a universal best setting for every game or machine.

Copyright and channel-policy checks

Streaming software does not grant rights to music, game footage, or other material you broadcast. Use content you own or are licensed to use, and review the destination platform’s current copyright and monetization policies. A stream that runs continuously is not automatically eligible for monetization: platform review can consider originality and reused content independently of the tool used to transmit it.
