Before you start: Desktop Chatbot is Windows-only
These instructions are for Streamlabs Chatbot, also called Desktop Chatbot—not Streamlabs Cloudbot. Streamlabs’ Chatbot FAQ describes Desktop Chatbot as Windows-only and points Linux and Mac users toward Cloudbot. Cloudbot is a separate online product, so its interface and features should not be assumed to match Desktop Chatbot scripts.
You will need Desktop Chatbot installed, access to the streamer and bot accounts you want to connect, and a script ZIP from a source you trust. Streamlabs’ official script article recommends its Chatbot Discord or someone you know well as places to find scripts; that is not a guarantee that every community file is safe.
Configure the Python runtime
Streamlabs’ script support article documents Python 2.7.13 for its legacy Desktop Chatbot workflow. The StreamlabsSupport GitHub repository further specifies Python 2.7.13 x86 and warns that newer Python versions or 64-bit Python can cause errors in this application. Treat these as version-specific instructions for the legacy desktop app, not as general Python installation advice.

- Check the requirements for your installed Chatbot version before installing Python. Do not assume that a runtime prescribed for one release applies to every version.
- If your version follows the documented legacy workflow, install the specified Python runtime and locate its
Libdirectory. The official example path isC:Python27Lib, but the correct path depends on where Python was installed. - In Desktop Chatbot, open the Scripts tab’s settings and set the Python directory to that
Libfolder. UseLib, notLibs. - Save the setting and reload scripts if the interface offers that option.
Make the Scripts tab appear
If you cannot see the Scripts tab, connect or reconnect the bot and streamer accounts under Connections, making sure they are connected to the streamer’s channel. Streamlabs lists those account connections as a requirement for the tab to appear.
Import a script ZIP
- Download the script as a ZIP from a source you trust. Desktop Chatbot scripts are not preloaded; they must be imported manually.
- Open the Scripts tab in Desktop Chatbot.
- Select Import in the upper-right corner, choose the ZIP file, and open it.
- Wait briefly for the script to appear in the Scripts view. If it does not, check the configured runtime and the Scripts error view; the script may also be broken or the setup incomplete.
Enable and use the imported script
Once it appears in the Scripts view, follow the controls and instructions supplied with that particular script. Scripts do not share one universal configuration or usage sequence, so do not assume that importing one automatically enables it or that its settings match another script. The reviewed official setup guidance covers importing, reloading, and inspecting errors, but not a single enable-and-configure procedure that applies to every third-party script.

If the script or a connected client specifically requests access to Chatbot’s websocket API, see the API-key guidance below. Do not share an API key publicly.
Protect your computer and API key
The community scripting documentation warns that scripts can access files on your computer. Before importing one, check who wrote it, inspect its code and requested permissions where possible, and look at its update history. Do not run a script you do not trust; a recommendation or community download location does not verify the safety of every file.

For scripts or clients that need Chatbot websocket access, the scripting documentation describes right-clicking a script to insert an API key by placing a small .js file in the script folder. Treat the key like a password. If you refresh it, the documentation says each relevant client.js file must also be updated. Only use this mechanism when the script or client requires it.
Troubleshoot scripts that do not load
- The Scripts tab is missing: reconnect the bot and streamer accounts under Connections to the streamer’s channel.
- The script does not appear after import: verify that you imported a ZIP in the Scripts tab and allow a short time for it to load. Streamlabs says the setup may be incomplete or the script may be broken.
- You see “No module named os,” “No module named json,” or an unexpected-token error: check that the runtime and architecture match the requirements for your Chatbot version, then verify that the configured path ends in
Lib, notLibs. StreamlabsSupport’s repository identifies these as cases where the Python version or library path should be checked; these checks will not repair an invalid script. - The import finishes but the script reports an error: inspect the Scripts error view. StreamlabsSupport identifies it as a primary troubleshooting aid, and Streamlabs’ historical Python scripting PDF also describes errors in the Scripts view and reloading scripts there.
- The script still fails after those checks: the script itself may be broken or incompatible. Consult its author’s instructions rather than changing runtime settings at random.
