Check the card’s capture modes (what reaches your computer), its separate passthrough modes (what it sends to a display), and whether those modes match your console or camera, monitor, cables, computer, and software. The Elgato Game Capture 4K X is an external USB option specified for capture up to 4K144; the HD60 X is for more limited capture needs, including HDR capture up to 1080p60; and AVerMedia’s Live Gamer 4K 2.1 (GC575) is an internal PCIe option specified for capture up to 4K60.
Capture resolution and passthrough resolution are different
A capture card has two distinct jobs. Capture is the signal sent to your computer for recording or streaming. Passthrough is the signal sent onward to a monitor or television so you can play or monitor the source on a display. A card may pass a high-resolution or high-refresh signal to a display while capturing a lower-resolution or lower-frame-rate signal on the computer.
Choose by the mode you need to record or stream, then separately confirm that passthrough suits your display. A passthrough maximum is not evidence of an equal capture capability. HDR also needs checking by exact resolution and frame-rate combination: support for HDR passthrough does not automatically mean HDR capture at that mode.
Which HDMI capture card fits your setup?
| Model | Connection | Manufacturer-listed capture capability | Passthrough and notable details | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Elgato Game Capture 4K X | External USB | Up to 4K144 | HDMI 2.1 and VRR passthrough; Elgato lists OBS and other applications as supported. See Elgato’s 4K X product page. | A high-refresh HDMI 2.1 external option. Verify that the particular resolution, frame rate, HDR, and VRR combination you need is supported across your entire setup. |
| Elgato Game Capture HD60 X | External USB | HDR capture up to 1080p60; HDR capture is not available at every resolution and frame-rate combination | HDR 10-bit passthrough up to 4K60. Elgato lists OBS and other applications as supported. Details are on Elgato’s HD60 X product page. | An external choice when its capture limits match the recording or stream you want. Do not treat its 4K60 HDR passthrough as 4K60 capture. |
| AVerMedia Live Gamer 4K 2.1 (GC575) | Internal PCIe | Up to 4K60, according to the manual and product specifications | HDMI 2.1; the vendor lists passthrough up to 4K144/120. Check the exact mode for your display chain. The GC575 manual also states that protected HDCP signals are not supported for viewing, recording, or streaming. | A desktop PCIe option for a high-refresh HDMI 2.1 chain, provided your computer has a suitable slot and meets the card’s system requirements. |
These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not independent performance measurements. They do not establish a universal winner or best value, and prices are not established here. Confirm the current model revision, regional availability, exact modes, and host requirements with the manufacturers before buying.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Match the source, card, display, and computer
Before choosing a model, write down the signal you want to capture and the signal you want to see on your display. Check every link in the chain: the console or camera’s HDMI output, the card’s input and passthrough, the monitor or TV, and the HDMI cables. A chain works only as well as its least capable component.
- Resolution and refresh rate: Check the exact combination, such as 4K at a particular frame rate, in the card’s capture specifications and separately in its passthrough specifications. Do not infer support from “HDMI 2.1” alone.
- HDR: Confirm whether HDR is supported for capture, passthrough, or both, and at which resolution and frame rate. The HD60 X, for example, has HDR passthrough up to 4K60 but HDR capture up to 1080p60, with capture unavailable at some combinations.
- VRR: If you use variable refresh rate, verify that the card supports it in passthrough at your intended mode and that the display and source do too.
- Host connection: External USB cards avoid installing an internal card, but require a compatible USB connection and sufficient host bandwidth. The GC575 is PCIe: check for an available suitable slot and a system that meets AVerMedia’s requirements.
- Cables and connectors: Match the required HDMI and USB connectors and use cables suitable for the resolution and refresh rate you intend to pass through. Check the manufacturer’s specified connections rather than assuming an existing cable will handle the mode.
- Recording or streaming application: Confirm support for your card, operating system, and application. Elgato lists OBS compatibility for both the 4K X and HD60 X; verify requirements and support for your specific setup.
What capture card do you need for Twitch or YouTube?
For a console or camera HDMI feed that needs to appear in streaming or recording software, select a capture card whose capture modes match the output you want to publish, then make sure the host and application can use it. The platform does not change the card’s capture limit: a 4K passthrough signal does not become a 4K recording just because the destination is YouTube or Twitch.

If the goal is instead to keep uploaded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, that is a different workflow from capturing a live HDMI source. StreamNeo is #1 for that job: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, at any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded, for one flat price per slot, and the first day is free. Learn about StreamNeo.
Will the card capture protected video?
Do not assume an HDMI capture card can record every HDMI source. HDCP-protected video can be blocked from capture. AVerMedia’s GC575 manual explicitly says the card does not support viewing, recording, or streaming protected signals; see the manual. Use capture only with sources and content you are authorized to record or stream, and check the source device’s output and content restrictions.

Common buying and setup problems
The display works, but the recording is lower resolution
You may be seeing passthrough rather than capture capability. Compare the software’s input mode with the card’s capture specifications, and check the selected mode in your recording or streaming application.
HDR works on the monitor but not in the recording
Passthrough and capture can support different HDR modes. Check the exact HDR capture combination for the selected resolution and frame rate; the HD60 X does not capture HDR at every combination.

High refresh rate or VRR is unavailable
Check the source output, card passthrough mode, display input, and cables together. A product’s HDMI version label alone does not confirm the particular resolution, refresh rate, or VRR combination you need.
The computer does not detect the card
Check that the host meets the manufacturer’s interface and system requirements, that the USB connection or PCIe installation is appropriate for the model, and that the recording application supports the card. For PCIe, also verify physical slot availability and fit.

When a capture card is not the right tool for 24/7 YouTube video
A capture card sends a live HDMI source into a computer. For a channel that needs uploaded recordings to loop continuously as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo runs that playback in the cloud instead: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
