Influencer collaborations can introduce your channel to people who already care about its subject—but growth is not guaranteed. Start with audience fit, agree on a project that benefits both creators, disclose any promotional relationship, and judge the result against a goal you set in advance.
Set a goal before you look for a collaborator
Choose the result you want the collaboration to produce. That might be introducing your channel to a relevant audience, making a particular piece of content, deepening community engagement, or supporting another measurable objective. There is no single growth goal that suits every channel.
Make the goal specific enough to guide your choice and later review. For example, if you want to reach people interested in a particular game or genre, a collaborator with a smaller but closely matched audience may be a better fit than a much larger creator whose viewers are unlikely to care about your content.
Find an influencer whose audience and content fit
Look beyond follower count. Compare the creator’s subject matter, audience characteristics, tone, content quality, credibility, and the contribution they could make to a shared project. Consider audience overlap too: a collaborator can bring useful incremental reach when their viewers are relevant but not already the same people who follow you.

Instagram Creator Marketplace is one possible discovery workflow. Meta’s 2024 announcement described searching creators using creator and audience attributes, reviewing portfolios, and communicating project details. Availability and eligibility can vary, so check the current options in your account rather than assuming every creator can use the tool: Meta’s Instagram Creator Marketplace announcement.
TikTok’s creator and brand-partner tools are another option. Its guidance describes tagging brand partners and sharing performance analytics; the workflow and eligibility may change. See TikTok’s content disclosure guidance.
- Review several recent posts, not just a top-performing clip.
- Ask whether the creator’s audience would plausibly want your channel’s videos.
- Check whether your styles and standards are compatible.
- Identify what each creator can contribute, such as expertise, access, a distinct viewpoint, or an existing community.
- Weigh expected effort and rights terms against the likely value of the exchange.
Propose a project with a clear mutual benefit
Make the first message specific. Explain why you think the audiences fit, what you propose making, what each person would do, and how both channels could benefit. Suggest a practical next step, such as a short call or a written outline. Avoid a generic request for exposure: it gives the other creator little reason to evaluate the idea.

A useful proposal can briefly cover:
- The goal and intended audience.
- The format and each creator’s contribution.
- Why the collaboration makes sense for both channels.
- The expected time and production effort.
- Whether payment, gifted items, or another material relationship is involved.
- A proposed schedule and the next decision to make.

Agree on the work before recording or posting
Put the practical terms in writing, even for a friendly collaboration. A short written agreement or clear message thread can prevent mismatched expectations.
- Deliverables: what each person will make, where it will appear, and any agreed promotional posts.
- Responsibilities: who handles research, recording, editing, thumbnails, captions, and posting.
- Schedule: recording date, review window, publication date, and any deadlines for supplying assets.
- Review: who may review the material, what can be changed, and how corrections or factual concerns are handled.
- Payment or gifts: record any fee, free product, travel, or other benefit and how it affects disclosure.
- Usage and amplification: state where each creator may reuse the content, for how long, and whether either party may run it as a paid promotion. Do not assume permission to reuse footage, clips, names, or likenesses.
- Measurement: decide which results matter and how you will share them.
Make something genuinely shared
Choose a format that gives each creator a meaningful role and serves the viewers of both channels. Possible ideas include an interview, a collaborative demonstration, complementary tutorials, a response to each other’s work, or a guest appearance. These are options to consider, not formats proven to outperform others; the available platform guidance does not establish a universally best collaboration format.

For a gaming channel, a shared piece could bring together different areas of expertise—for example, one creator’s strategy knowledge and another’s challenge-run experience—provided the idea suits both audiences. Plan the viewer’s reason to watch, rather than treating the collaboration as two unrelated advertisements placed together.
Disclose promotional relationships on each platform
If a collaboration includes branded content or another material relationship, use the relevant platform’s disclosure tools and make the relationship clear to viewers. Requirements depend on platform and jurisdiction; this overview is not legal advice.

TikTok
TikTok’s creator guidance, updated April 2026, says: “When posting content that promotes a brand, product, or service on TikTok, you must turn on the commercial content disclosure setting.” Its policy says the setting itself does not affect feed distribution, while undisclosed content may be ineligible for For You distribution. Neither point guarantees reach. Check TikTok’s current guidance and use the setting when required: TikTok’s content disclosure guidance.
TikTok reported that an internal study comparing nearly 2 million videos found no performance difference between videos with and without proper disclosure in tests in Indonesia and Pakistan. That is TikTok’s own finding in two markets, not independent evidence and not a result that can be assumed for every creator, country, or platform. The report is available at TikTok Marketing Science’s disclosure study.
Make the disclosure noticeable
The FTC says influencers are responsible for making disclosures, knowing the Endorsement Guides, and complying with laws against deceptive advertising. Its guidance emphasizes that disclosures should be easy to notice and understand in the content format. A disclosure that is hard to see or separated from the endorsement may not communicate the relationship clearly. Measure the outcome against the goal
Choose measures before publishing, then compare the collaboration with an appropriate baseline, such as the channel’s usual performance for similar content. The right measure depends on the objective; these are practical options, not universal benchmarks.

Common mistakes that weaken a collaboration
- Choosing on reach alone: a large audience is not useful if its interests do not match the content.
- Asking for exposure without a project: propose a specific contribution and benefit for both sides.
- Leaving terms until after production: agree on deliverables, dates, review, compensation, and usage before work begins.
- Assuming a disclosure tool is optional or sufficient by itself: follow the platform’s current tool requirements and make the relationship clear to viewers.
- Calling any performance change proof of success: connect measurements to the goal and compare with an appropriate baseline.
- Expecting a guaranteed audience boost: a collaboration can create relevant exposure, but it cannot promise subscriptions, views, or sustained growth.
