To earn voluntary support during a livestream, set up a third-party tip page, connect a payment method you can receive payouts through, share the link where viewers can find it, and add the service’s alert widget as an overlay in your streaming software. You can also use platform-native features such as YouTube Super Chat or channel memberships, but those are distinct from a direct tip link and follow their own platform rules.
Choose the kind of support you want to offer
One-time tips through a third-party page
A tip page is a payment route separate from your streaming platform. You connect a supported payment processor, then share the page link with viewers. Streamlabs documents tipping-page setup and linking the page on Twitch, YouTube, and Kick in its setup guide. Availability of payment methods depends on the service, processor, account, and region.
Platform-native fan funding
Features such as YouTube Super Chat and channel memberships are offered within YouTube and are not the same as a direct tip link. YouTube’s policy is explicit: “Fan funding features are not crowdfunding or donation tools.” It describes Super Thanks as paid animation and message highlighting, and memberships as recurring payments tied to member perks. Read the current YouTube Commerce Products policy before presenting any native feature as a donation.
Twitch’s May 13, 2026 Monetization for All announcement discusses monetization access and onboarding milestones. Treat those program details as changeable; do not assume every feature or payout is automatically available to every creator.

Recurring membership support
Memberships can complement occasional tips when you have perks to offer. Patreon’s guide, updated September 11, 2026, says creators who published a page after August 4, 2025 use the standard 10% plan, plus applicable taxes and payment-processing fees. Existing-page treatment has caveats, so check the current Patreon creator-fees overview for the plan that applies to your page.
Set up a tip page and make it easy to find
- Check payment access first. Confirm that the service supports a payout method you can use and that your intended audience can pay through available methods in their region. A payment route may also have age, channel, activity, or country requirements.
- Connect the processor and review privacy settings. Streamlabs’ May 20, 2026 guide recommends a PayPal Business account to help keep personal details hidden from viewers. Check the account’s actual settings and local availability; do not assume a business account or a particular processor is available or appropriate everywhere.
- Customize the tip page. Set an explanation of what support means, any suggested amounts, and message controls offered by the service. Be clear whether the payment is voluntary support or tied to a promised benefit. StreamElements’ terms say tips are not payments for goods or services; do not describe a payment as tax-deductible or legally a donation without jurisdiction-specific authority.
- Publish the link where viewers look. Put it in the stream description and, where available, a channel panel. Introduce it briefly during the stream so viewers know what the link is for; keep it optional and avoid implying that a tip is required to participate.
Configure donation alerts on stream
An alert is an on-screen overlay that can display a contribution and, depending on the service’s controls, play a sound or show a message. Streamlabs and StreamElements both document customizable alerts: see the Streamlabs tip page and StreamElements tipping overview.

- Open the alert or widget settings in your selected service and choose the contribution events you want to display.
- Customize the visual and audio behavior. Choose the available animation, sound, duration, and message-display options. Use the service’s current controls for message moderation or filtering rather than assuming every service offers identical safeguards.
- Add the alert as a browser source or overlay in your streaming setup using the widget URL and instructions provided by that service. Keep private widget URLs private, since they control the overlay.
- Preview the alert and inspect its placement so it does not cover game-critical interface elements, subtitles, or other information viewers need. Verify the service’s current setup instructions if its interface has changed.

Check eligibility before choosing StreamElements SE.Pay
SE.Pay is not established as available to every streamer or country. StreamElements’ published requirements specify age 18 or older, a Twitch or YouTube channel with over 100 followers or subscribers, recent consistent streaming, PayPal enabled, and a bank account in an eligible country. Understand fees and payment trade-offs
“No platform cut” does not mean that a contribution reaches you without fees. Streamlabs says it takes no cut of tips, excluding standard credit-card processing fees. StreamElements says it does not add a tipping fee, while payment-provider fees may still apply. Actual costs and usable payment methods can vary with geography, account, currency, processor charges, and currency conversion. Check the current service and processor terms rather than treating “free” as a guarantee of zero cost.
Compare options by whether viewers can pay, whether you qualify for payouts, the total cost after processing and conversion, the alert controls you need, and whether you want one-off voluntary tips or recurring support tied to perks. Third-party terms and available payment methods can change; StreamElements’ terms reserve the ability to alter payment methods or tipping availability.

Keep expectations and viewer messaging honest
- Keep the terms distinct: a direct tip page, a platform-native feature such as Super Chat, and a recurring membership are different payment routes.
- Explain whether support is voluntary or connected to a specific benefit, and describe that benefit accurately.
- Do not promise that alerts will increase income or suggest a typical donation amount; the cited platform and product documentation does not establish a performance benchmark.
- Do not imply a tip is tax-deductible or legally a donation without advice grounded in the viewer’s and creator’s jurisdiction.
