To set up a green screen in Streamlabs Desktop, light a physical green backdrop evenly, then add the Chroma Key filter to your webcam source and tune it gradually while watching the preview. The best settings depend on your backdrop, lighting and appearance; if the key starts removing hair, skin, clothing or your chair, back off the settings and improve the lighting first.
What you need before you start
A green screen is optional for streaming, but this method requires a physical green backdrop and lighting that covers it evenly. Streamlabs lists pullout screens, popup screens and simple green cloth as options. Choose one that fits your room, covers the camera frame and can be kept reasonably smooth. A stand or clamps may help with cloth, but Streamlabs does not identify them as required.
- Put the backdrop as far behind you as your room allows. More distance helps reduce green light reflecting onto your hair, skin, clothing and chair.
- Light the backdrop evenly across its surface. Lighting only from the front may not be enough to eliminate bright and dark patches.
- Straighten cloth and address creases, wrinkles or gaps before adjusting the software. A wrinkled or unevenly lit screen is harder to key cleanly.
- If you wear green clothing, the filter may remove it along with the backdrop.

How to set up a Green Screen in Streamlabs Desktop
- Add your webcam if it is not already in the scene. In Streamlabs Desktop, go to Sources, add a source, choose Video Capture Device and select your webcam. This camera-source path is in Streamlabs’ Quick Start Guide, dated May 20, 2026.
- Open the camera source’s filters. In the scene, open the webcam source’s context menu and choose Filters.
- Add the key. Add the Chroma Key filter. The green backdrop should become transparent in the preview, revealing whatever is beneath the camera source in the scene.
- Tune the controls gradually. Start conservatively and adjust while watching the preview. There is no universal preset: Streamlabs notes that lighting, hair, skin tone and the background affect which values work.
- Finish the camera framing. Once the key looks clean, crop unwanted edges and resize or reposition the camera source in the scene.
What the Chroma Key controls do

| Opacity | How solid or transparent the camera source appears. | Use it to adjust the source’s overall opacity; it is not a substitute for correcting the key or backdrop lighting. |
| Contrast, Brightness and Gamma | Adjust the overall displayed camera image for differing light and dark conditions. | Use them for image appearance, not as a replacement for evenly lighting the backdrop. |
Troubleshoot a messy key
- Green patches remain: Check for uneven backdrop lighting first. Then raise Similarity in small increments, checking that skin, hair, clothing and the chair stay intact.
- Edges look jagged: Adjust Smoothness gradually. If parts of the subject begin to disappear, reduce it.
- A green fringe appears around you: Move farther from the backdrop if possible and adjust Key Color Spill Reduction.
- Parts of you or the chair disappear: Reduce Similarity or Smoothness and inspect the edges around hair, clothing and the chair. Avoid green clothing when using a green key.
- The background looks patchy or wrinkled: Straighten it and improve the evenness of its lighting before trying to compensate with filter settings.
Streamlabs Desktop is not Talk Studio
This guide’s steps are for Streamlabs Desktop: add Filters > Chroma Key to the camera source. Streamlabs Talk Studio has a separate browser-based virtual-background workflow. Its instructions about enabling a virtual background, previewing it live or using a minimum 720p setting apply to Talk Studio, not as requirements for Desktop chroma key.
