Use YouTube Shorts to introduce channel-relevant ideas, then give interested viewers a clear next step: a related video that expands on the Short. Review audience response in YouTube Studio and build on patterns—not on a promise that every Short will produce views or subscribers. Recommendations are personalized, and Shorts viewers do not always want the same things as long-form viewers.
Choose Shorts that belong on your channel
Start with the people your channel serves and the subject they come to you for. A Short might explain one useful point, show a moment from a larger process, or preview a fuller video. The goal is to make a satisfying piece in its own right while connecting naturally to the rest of your channel—not to chase a format or trend that has no fit with your audience.
YouTube says it does not favor a particular type of Short. Its recommendations are personalized, taking account of viewers’ interests and viewing history as well as how they respond when a Short is shown. Prior enjoyment of a channel or topic and engagement with trending sounds can also inform what someone is recommended. There is no universal trick that guarantees distribution. YouTube’s Shorts discovery guidance also identifies topic interest, competing videos, and seasonality as factors that can affect impressions.
Make each Short clear and satisfying on its own
Give the viewer a reason to stay early, make the point easy to follow, and deliver what the opening implies. YouTube describes signals including whether people choose to watch, ignore, or mark a Short “not interested,” whether they keep watching, average view duration, average percentage viewed, likes, and survey responses. These are useful ways to understand viewer response, not a formula that guarantees reach.

You can create Shorts with a smartphone and YouTube’s Shorts camera; specialist equipment is not a prerequisite. Use a format you can produce well and consistently. YouTube says there is no minimum posting cadence required for Shorts to perform well, so choose a schedule you can sustain rather than treating daily uploads as a platform rule. Give viewers a useful next step
Add a related video in YouTube Studio
- Upload your Short to YouTube.
- In YouTube Studio, open the Short’s details and use the related-video option to select a closely connected video from your channel.
- Save the change. Viewers can see a clickable link below your channel handle in the Shorts player.
The related-video feature requires advanced feature access. The linked video must be public or unlisted and comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines. See YouTube’s instructions for adding a related video to a Short.

Do not rely on a pasted URL in the description or comments
URLs in YouTube Shorts descriptions and comments are non-clickable. A viewer would have to act on the text themselves, so a pasted link is not a substitute for the related-video feature. YouTube documents which link locations are clickable in its guidance on sharing links with audiences.
Understand where discovery can happen
Shorts may reach viewers through the Shorts feed, Home, subscriptions, Search, sounds and hashtags, and the Trends page. Search takes account of how metadata relates to a viewer’s query and whether people click and watch. When a trend genuinely fits your content, using a sound from YouTube’s Audio Library can increase the chance of appearing on sound pages. That is an opportunity, not a guarantee; relevance to your channel still matters. YouTube lists these discovery surfaces and search considerations.

Use Studio Analytics to decide what to make next
In YouTube Studio, open Analytics, go to the Content tab, and select the Shorts view. Check the reports below together: a raw view count alone does not tell you whether people chose to watch, stayed, or found the Short through a useful route.

YouTube documents these Shorts reports and recommends looking for patterns across stronger and weaker videos rather than treating one viral Short as the standard. Compare Shorts with similar topics or formats over a consistent period. Ask which ideas repeatedly earn a stronger chose-to-view share, hold attention, bring subscribers, or draw relevant search traffic. Use those patterns to shape another experiment. Know what a view count does—and does not—mean
Since March 31, 2025, YouTube counts a Shorts view when the Short starts to play or replay, with no minimum watch time. The previous measure is available as “Engaged views.” That means raw views can count starts that do not establish that a viewer elected to keep watching. For that question, check Engaged views alongside the chose-to-view report. The definition and change are explained in YouTube’s Shorts creation guidance and analytics guidance.
As of August 24, 2026, YouTube’s general view-count definition counts a start across Shorts, long-form videos, and live streams. YouTube says this change does not alter YouTube Partner Program earnings or eligibility: those continue to use engaged or qualified Shorts views and engaged or qualified watch hours, as applicable. When comparing results, check that you are comparing the same measure and time period. See YouTube’s content-performance guidance.

Set realistic expectations for long-form growth
YouTube says Shorts performance does not negatively affect long-form video recommendations, and Shorts can help viewers discover a channel. That does not mean every person who watches a Short will watch a longer video or subscribe. YouTube’s recommendation explainer says recommendations can connect Shorts, long videos, live streams, and posts, while also noting that viewers’ preferences can vary by format. Link to a longer video only when it genuinely follows from the Short, then check whether viewers actually take that next step. You can also use Unique Viewers to understand active audience size. For gaming channels, that might mean a short clip demonstrating one mechanic points to the full tutorial, or a memorable moment points to the complete match or episode. Keep the Short worthwhile even for someone who never clicks through; its job is not merely to advertise another upload.
Keep the workflow sustainable
- Pick a channel-relevant idea that can be delivered clearly in a Short.
- Make the Short self-contained, with a prompt opening and a payoff that matches it.
- If a longer video is the natural follow-up, attach it using the related-video feature instead of relying on a URL in the description or comments.
- Review Shorts Analytics after publishing, including chose-to-view, retention, subscribers, and traffic sources.
- Compare similar Shorts, then refine the topic or execution based on recurring audience response.
- Use a production pace you can maintain without lowering the value of the videos.
