The configuration depends on your Wowza version: use the Log4j 2 procedure for 4.8.8.01 and later, and the separate Log4j 1.x procedure for 4.8.5 and earlier.
1. Check your Wowza version and logging format
Before editing configuration, identify the Wowza Streaming Engine version. Wowza says Log4j 2 is available in version 4.8.8.01 and later; earlier releases use Log4j 1.x. Its current analysis setup applies to 4.8.8.01 and later, while its legacy instructions apply to 4.8.5 and earlier. The reviewed documentation does not explain the 4.8.6–4.8.8.00 interval in detail, so check the documentation supplied for your exact version before changing production logging.
See Wowza’s logging overview, Log4j 2 analysis setup, and legacy analysis setup.
2. Enable the analysis log
Wowza Streaming Engine 4.8.8.01 and later
- Open
[install-dir]/conf/log4j2-config.xml. - Within the Root logger, enable the appender references Wowza documents:
stdout, serverAccess, serverError, serverStats, vhostAccess, andvhostError. - Follow the levels in Wowza’s example:
infofor stdout, access, and stats appenders, andwarnfor error appenders.
Use Wowza’s version-specific configuration example rather than substituting a legacy Log4j properties line.

Wowza Streaming Engine 4.8.5 and earlier
- Open
[install-dir]/conf/log4j.properties. - Add
serverStatsto thelog4j.rootCategoryappender list. Wowza’s example islog4j.rootCategory=INFO, stdout, serverAccess, serverError, serverStats.
Do not mix the Log4j 2 XML configuration with the older properties-file syntax.
3. Find and import the right file
Wowza identifies wowzastreamingengine_stats.log as the best log file for use with analysis tools. Engine logs are normally under [install-dir]/logs. Manager logs are separate and normally stored under [install-dir]/manager/logs; they are not the same as the Engine logs.

- Locate
wowzastreamingengine_stats.login the Engine log directory. - Import that file into Sawmill and select its Wowza Streaming Engine/Wowza Media Server log format plug-in.
- Let Sawmill parse and aggregate the log, then use its filtered reports to investigate the fields recorded in the file.
Sawmill lists a Wowza log analyzer plug-in and describes parsing, importing, aggregating, and dynamically filtered reporting. Its supported log formats page lists the broader format support. The reviewed product information does not provide a version-by-version compatibility matrix, so validate an import using a representative file from your server.
4. Choose reports based on logged fields
Wowza documents fields such as c-client-id, c-ip, c-proto, c-referrer, c-user-agent, cs-bytes, cs-stream-bytes, x-stream-id, x-suri, and x-vhost. Use the corresponding fields available in your parsed report to frame questions such as:

- Client mix: Which client IPs, user agents, or protocols appear in the retained records?
- Traffic: How do transferred-byte fields vary across the period and streams you have logged?
- Stream activity: Which stream IDs or connection URIs appear in the records?
- Virtual hosts: How is activity distributed across the logged virtual hosts?
- Referrers: Which referrer values are present, if that field is being written?
These reports can only answer questions supported by configured and retained fields. Wowza describes detailed default output as Extended Common Log Format, but the chosen appenders and configured fields determine what is actually written. Custom formats can also affect parsing, so inspect a sample of the log and confirm that Sawmill is interpreting its columns correctly before relying on a report.
5. Handle large files and complex searches
Wowza says the Logs tool in Streaming Engine Manager works best with small files and simple search strings. For files several megabytes or larger, or for more complex searches, download the logs or access them directly in the installation directories, then analyze the file in Sawmill. See Wowza’s Manager log-viewing guidance.

Troubleshooting
- The stats file is missing: Check that
serverStatsis enabled in the configuration format and location appropriate to your Wowza version; then check[install-dir]/logs. - Sawmill does not parse fields as expected: Check whether the file uses a customized format or different configured fields. Compare Sawmill’s parsed fields with representative raw log lines and validate the import before drawing conclusions.
- You edited the wrong configuration file: Verify the version boundary first. The Log4j 2 XML procedure applies to 4.8.8.01 and later; the legacy properties procedure applies to 4.8.5 and earlier. Documentation reviewed here does not resolve the 4.8.6–4.8.8.00 interval.
- You are looking at the wrong logs: Engine logs are under
[install-dir]/logs; Manager logs are under[install-dir]/manager/logs. - Manager search is impractical for the file: Download or access the log directly for several-megabyte files or more complex searches, then work from the file in Sawmill.
Or let it run in the cloud
Log analysis is separate from keeping a YouTube channel live. If your goal is a 24/7 stream made from uploaded videos, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
