To preserve scenes and sources too, save or export the separate Scene Collection; OBS profiles do not contain scenes.
What an OBS Profile saves
OBS Studio’s Profile feature is for settings chiefly related to streaming and recording. A profile can include the configured stream destination and account, video settings such as the base canvas resolution, and output settings such as bitrate and encoder configuration. Profiles can be created, duplicated, renamed, removed, imported, and exported. (OBS Project, Profiles; OBS Studio Overview Guide.)
As OBS puts it, “Profiles do NOT store your Scenes — use Scene Collections”. A profile preserves output and stream configuration; a Scene Collection preserves the scene layout and its sources. If you want to move or restore a complete setup, handle both separately.
Create a profile for a stream or recording
- Open the Profile menu. In OBS Studio, use the Profile menu at the top of the window.
- Choose New or Duplicate. New creates a blank profile with default settings. Duplicate copies the currently selected profile, which is often more convenient when your new setup is similar to an existing one.
- Name it for its job. For example, use a name such as “YouTube 1080p60” or “Recording.” These are organizational examples, not built-in OBS presets. A label that identifies the destination and intended output makes it easier to select the right configuration later.
- Configure the active profile. Set the stream destination or connected account, video options, and output settings for the stream or recording you intend to make. OBS associates these settings with the selected profile.
- Test before relying on it live. Confirm the destination, stream key, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and system performance. A saved profile keeps its configured values; it does not automatically adapt them when platform guidance, network capacity, or hardware conditions change.
Keep scenes in a Scene Collection
If the new stream needs different game capture, webcam, sources, or scene layouts, select or create a separate Scene Collection as well as the profile. The Profile menu manages stream/output configurations; Scene Collections manage the scenes and sources shown in the output. Selecting the right profile alone will not restore a different layout.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Export a profile for backup or another computer
- Open the Profile menu and choose Import/Export.
- Export the current profile settings. OBS creates a JSON file.
- Store the JSON backup somewhere you can find it, such as a secure backup location. A USB flash drive is one optional way to carry the file; OBS does not require one.
- On the other OBS installation, use Profile > Import/Export to import the file.
- If you also need your scenes and sources, export the Scene Collection separately. A profile JSON is not a complete OBS project backup.
Take care with exported profile files and screenshots: a profile may include stream-account configuration. Treat any file that could expose credentials as sensitive.
Profile settings versus YouTube Reuse settings
YouTube’s Reuse settings action is separate from OBS Profiles. In YouTube Live Control Room, it copies settings, metadata, and the stream key from a previous YouTube stream into a new one. An OBS Profile switches OBS-side configuration. One does not replace the other. YouTube describes a stream key as a password and address for the encoder; if it is compromised, an authorized channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room and then update the encoder. (YouTube Help, Manage live stream settings.)

Choose bitrate, resolution, and frame rate for the actual stream
There is no single bitrate or resolution that suits every platform, game, encoder, and internet connection. OBS notes that bitrate depends on both upload speed and the streaming service’s limits; 60 fps can require more resources than 30 fps. Also distinguish the base canvas resolution, which defines the working scene, from the output or scaled resolution sent to the platform. (OBS Project, OBS Studio Overview Guide.)
For YouTube specifically, its published H.264 encoder guidance recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are YouTube recommendations for those particular modes, not universal OBS settings or a guarantee that a given connection can sustain the stream. Check the current guidance for your codec, resolution, and frame rate before going live. (YouTube Help, Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.)

- Use an upload-speed test and leave enough capacity for a stable stream rather than choosing a bitrate from resolution alone.
- Test motion and audio similar to the real stream, then monitor stream health.
- Check the platform’s current requirements and confirm that your computer can encode the selected output smoothly.
Common problems and fixes
- The scenes did not come across with the profile. That is expected: import or select the required Scene Collection separately.
- The stream goes to the wrong account or destination. Check the selected Profile and its stream configuration, then confirm the destination and key in the platform’s live controls.
- The stream key no longer works. Verify that the key in OBS matches the active YouTube stream. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- The video stutters or the stream is unstable. Recheck upload capacity, bitrate, platform limits, and computer performance. Test a less demanding output or frame rate if the system cannot sustain the selected configuration.
- The imported profile does not recreate the entire setup. Importing a profile restores its profile settings, not the scene layouts and sources. Transfer the Scene Collection too if needed.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running around the clock, StreamNeo is a different option from saving OBS profiles: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
