To keep music or another source in your Twitch live mix but out of the VOD, connect your Twitch account in OBS, enable Twitch VOD Track under Settings → Output, then use Advanced Audio Properties to route sources. By default, track 1 carries live audio and track 2 carries VOD audio. For separate audio in a local recording, configure recording tracks separately; that is a different workflow.
Choose the audio workflow you need
OBS supports two related but distinct setups:
- Different live and VOD mixes: Use Twitch VOD Track when viewers should hear a source live, but it should not appear in the Twitch VOD. Music is a common example. OBS describes the feature as sending a different audio feed to the live stream and VOD (OBS Twitch VOD Track Guide, dated 2023-07-14).
- Separate tracks in a local recording: Assign sources to multiple recording tracks so you can adjust them independently in an editor. Tracks 3–6 remain available for this purpose in the VOD-track configuration; you must also enable the intended recording tracks in Output.
These settings do not mean the same thing: tracks 1 and 2 control the live/VOD feeds in the Twitch VOD-track setup, while recording tracks are for the locally saved file and post-production.
Set up a separate Twitch VOD mix
- Connect Twitch. In OBS, open Settings → Stream and choose Connect Account. Sign in and authorize OBS.
- Enable the VOD track. Open Settings → Output. Enable Enable Custom Encoder Settings; then enable Twitch VOD Track, which appears as an option.
- Open source routing. In the Audio Mixer dock, click the gear icon and select Advanced Audio Properties. You can also open it from the Edit menu.
- Assign each source. In the track checkboxes, include a source on track 1 if it belongs in the live mix. Include it on track 2 if it should be heard in the VOD. For example, to play music live but omit it from the VOD, leave it checked on track 1 and unchecked on track 2. Keep game audio checked on both if it should be heard in both.
- Check the rest of the mix. Apply the same decision source by source, including microphone, game audio, alerts, and any capture sources. A source omitted from a track will not be part of that feed.

Record separate audio tracks locally for editing
If your goal is to mix game audio, microphone, music, or other sources independently after recording, configure the recording tracks as well as the source assignments. The OBS Multiple Audio Track Recording Guide documents using tracks 3–6 for this type of separation.

- Open Advanced Audio Properties from the Audio Mixer gear icon or the Edit menu.
- For each source, check the track or tracks that should contain it. Choose assignments that make sense for editing—for example, give the microphone and game audio distinct tracks if you want to adjust them separately.
- Open Settings → Output and enable the recording tracks you assigned. A source checkbox alone does not enable the corresponding track in the recording output.
- Make a short test recording and open it in your intended editor. Confirm that the tracks contain the expected sources before relying on the setup for a full session.
Standard video players generally play only one audio track at a time. If you plan to publish a local recording without first processing it in an editor, route all sources to track 1 so the ordinary playback mix includes everything. This playback warning is also in OBS’s recording guide.
Capture game or application audio without duplicating it
Per-application audio capture has operating-system and OBS-version requirements. OBS documents Application Audio Capture as available from OBS Studio 28 on Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11. OBS Studio 30.1 added an option to include audio with Window Capture or Game Capture. These are compatibility details from OBS’s Application Audio Capture Guide (dated 2023-07-12); they do not guarantee every application or setup will behave identically.

When using Application Audio Capture sources, OBS advises disabling global Desktop Audio in Settings → Audio to avoid capturing the same sound twice and creating echo. Some applications may not work with this source; OBS documents VB-Cable as a workaround. Consult the OBS guide for the relevant setup details.
Troubleshoot missing, duplicated, or misplaced audio
- The VOD still contains music. Reopen Advanced Audio Properties and check that the music source is unchecked on track 2. Confirm that the Twitch VOD Track option is enabled in Output.
- The VOD is missing a source that should be there. Check that source’s track 2 box. Track 1 is the live feed by default; enabling a source on track 1 alone does not put it in the VOD feed.
- Audio is doubled or echoing. If you use Application Audio Capture, check whether the same audio is also being captured through Desktop Audio. OBS recommends disabling global Desktop Audio for this setup.
- A local file has no sound in an ordinary player. The player may be playing a different track or only one track. If publishing without editing, make sure track 1 includes every source needed in the final mix.
- A source does not appear through Application Audio Capture. Check that your OBS and Windows versions meet the documented requirements. OBS notes that some applications may be incompatible and describes VB-Cable as a workaround.
- Your editor does not show the expected separate tracks. Check both the source assignments in Advanced Audio Properties and the recording-track selections in Settings → Output, then make a short test recording.
