To send OBS Studio’s main program feed over NDI, install the current third-party plugin, DistroAV (formerly OBS-NDI), then use its NDI Output function. Do not choose NDI Source for this job: that feature brings an NDI feed into OBS rather than sending OBS out. DistroAV’s current listing requires OBS Studio 31.1.1 or newer and 64-bit Windows, macOS, or Linux; its latest 6.2.0 release notes specify NDI SDK 6.3.0 or newer. Check the project’s current instructions before installing, since compatibility requirements change between releases.
What you need for an OBS NDI output
- OBS Studio: DistroAV’s listing currently gives OBS Studio 31.1.1 as its minimum and supports 64-bit Windows, macOS, and Linux. [DistroAV listing]
- DistroAV: NDI’s documentation identifies DistroAV, formerly OBS-NDI, as the third-party plugin used for NDI workflows in OBS, and says NDI does not provide an official OBS plugin. [NDI’s OBS overview]
- NDI runtime or SDK: NDI’s overview calls for NDI Runtime 6.3 or newer; DistroAV 6.2.0 release notes specify NDI SDK 6.3.0 or newer. Follow the requirement named by the current DistroAV installation instructions for your operating system. [DistroAV 6.2.0 release notes]
- A receiving device or application: NDI carries audio and video over IP, so the destination needs to discover or receive the feed on the network. The sources do not establish that you need to buy a cable or specific network hardware.
OBS plugins can be limited by operating system or architecture, or may not yet support the OBS version installed on your computer. OBS recommends checking a plugin’s compatibility and installation guidance rather than assuming a plugin works across every setup. [OBS plugin guide]
Choose the right DistroAV feature
DistroAV has three distinct NDI functions. Choose based on the direction and scope of the feed:
| Feature | What it does | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| NDI Output | Sends OBS’s main program view over NDI. | You want another device or application to receive the final OBS output. |
| NDI Source | Receives an NDI feed inside OBS. | You want an external NDI video/audio feed to appear as a source in an OBS scene. |
| NDI Filter | Sends its parent OBS source or scene to NDI. Audio is supported only with video capture, media, and VLC sources. | You want to send a selected source or scene rather than the main program view. |
These feature descriptions are in the DistroAV listing. [DistroAV listing]

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Install DistroAV and enable an output
- Check your OBS version and system architecture. Confirm OBS is at least version 31.1.1 and that you are using a supported 64-bit operating system. The DistroAV listing and OBS plugin guidance are the compatibility references; recheck them for the release you intend to install. [DistroAV listing] [OBS plugin guide]
- Remove an old OBS-NDI plugin, if present. NDI directs users to remove the old plugin before installing DistroAV. The DistroAV 6.0.0 update says OBS-NDI was renamed and that old OBS-NDI must be uninstalled when moving to DistroAV 6.x; it says settings transfer automatically. [NDI’s OBS overview] [DistroAV 6.0.0 release notes]
- Install the version of DistroAV that matches your system. Use the project’s current installation notes and satisfy the NDI runtime or SDK requirement specified there. DistroAV 6.2.0 notes describe a one-click installer for missing requirements on Windows and macOS. The earlier 6.1.1 notes list Winget on Windows, Homebrew on macOS, and Flathub on Linux; those are routes documented for that version, not guaranteed current instructions for later releases. [DistroAV 6.2.0 release notes] [DistroAV 6.1.1 release notes]
- Restart OBS. After installation, reopen OBS and look for DistroAV’s NDI output controls. The exact dialog labels and menu sequence are not established across all supported operating systems and versions, so use the labels and version-matched instructions shown by your installed release rather than relying on an older guide’s menu path.
- Turn on the output you need. Select the NDI Output function to send OBS’s main program view. If your goal is to receive NDI inside OBS, add an NDI Source instead; if you need a particular source or scene sent, use the NDI Filter as appropriate. [DistroAV listing]
- Check the receiver. On the other device or application, select or discover the NDI feed from OBS. If discovery fails, check network reachability and firewall permissions on the sending and receiving systems; installing the plugin by itself does not guarantee the devices can see one another. DistroAV 6.1.1 notes mention added Windows firewall rules. [DistroAV 6.1.1 release notes]
NDI is an audio/video-over-IP workflow. A wired Ethernet connection can be a useful network choice where available, but the reviewed product documentation does not make a new cable or particular hardware a DistroAV requirement. [NDI]
Why NDI may be missing or not working
No NDI controls appear in OBS
- Confirm DistroAV installed and loaded; an older OBS-NDI plugin is not a substitute for the current DistroAV release.
- Check the minimum OBS and NDI runtime/SDK requirements for the DistroAV version you installed. Requirements have changed: 6.1.1 notes list OBS 31+ and NDI 6+, while 6.2.0 specifies OBS 31.1.1 and SDK 6.3.0. [6.1.1 notes] [6.2.0 notes]
- Check operating system and architecture support. A plugin may not be available for a particular architecture or may lag behind an OBS update. For portable or custom OBS installations, OBS’s plugin guide says install locations can differ; prefer the current installer and project instructions over manually copying plugin files. [OBS plugin guide]
- On Windows or macOS, check whether the installer has supplied the required runtime; DistroAV 6.2.0 describes one-click installation and improved handling of missing requirements. [DistroAV 6.2.0 release notes]
The receiver cannot find OBS
- Verify both devices or applications are on a network where they can discover and reach each other.
- Review firewall permissions for OBS, DistroAV, and NDI traffic on the relevant systems. The DistroAV 6.1.1 release notes mention Windows firewall rule additions, but network and firewall behavior can still depend on the local setup. [DistroAV 6.1.1 release notes]
- Confirm you enabled NDI Output if sending the main program feed. NDI Source is for receiving into OBS, not sending the OBS program view.
You installed a plugin, but the wrong feed appears
Check whether the intended output is the main program view or a selected source/scene. NDI Output sends the program view; NDI Filter targets its parent source or scene. A receiver configured to use a different NDI sender or feed will not show the output you expected. [DistroAV listing]

Or let it run in the cloud
DistroAV sends OBS media over your network; it is not a way to keep a YouTube channel live after your computer is off. If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream of uploaded recordings or a playlist, StreamNeo runs that playback from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, then go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams uploaded video at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat per-slot price, and StreamNeo can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera capture. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
