How to Add Stream Labels to a YouTube Live Stream

Show changing event labels on your YouTube live stream by configuring an overlay and adding it to OBS, or use Streamlabs’ documented plugin workflow.

To add a changing label—such as a latest-follower or subscriber label—to a YouTube live stream, set it up with an overlay provider, then display its overlay URL in an OBS scene using a Browser source. YouTube Studio manages the broadcast and chat; the label is part of the scene you send from OBS or similar streaming software.

Choose the right kind of label

A stream label displays a piece of information, such as the latest follower or subscriber. An alert is different: it announces an event, often with an animation or sound. A fixed name or message does not need a dynamic label integration; add it as a text source in your streaming software. For event-driven text, use a provider that supports your YouTube account and the specific event you want to show. Do not assume a label configured for another platform will work for YouTube.

OBS describes provider-generated overlays as a way to add labels, alerts, and other scene elements. The provider configures the overlay; OBS displays it. For the usual Browser-source workflow, OBS says a plugin is not required. OBS’s overlay tutorial explains the distinction and setup.

Add a provider overlay URL in OBS

  1. Configure the overlay with its provider. Select the label or event information you want, and check that the provider supports it for your YouTube account. Provider interfaces and supported event types differ.
  2. Copy the overlay address. The provider may call it an Overlay URL, Widget URL, or Alert URL.
  3. Choose the OBS scene. In OBS Studio, select the scene that should show the label.
  4. Add a Browser source. In the Sources panel, add a Browser source, then paste the provider’s URL into its URL field.
  5. Set the source dimensions and save. Choose a width and height that fit the overlay in your scene. Check the scene preview and, if possible, verify the result in a test broadcast before relying on it live.

If the label should appear in more than one scene, add the source to each relevant scene or use the provider’s and OBS’s available scene-sharing options. The exact behavior depends on your setup.

Use Streamlabs Stream Labels inside OBS

Streamlabs documents a plugin workflow that adds labels through its OBS integration. Its quick-start guide lists Windows and OBS Studio 28.0.0 or later as requirements; check the current guide for changes before installing.

  1. Install the Streamlabs plugin, then open Streamlabs from OBS’s top menu.
  2. Choose Stream Labels, then Add a Stream Label.
  3. Select the label you want. Add it to another scene if needed.
  4. To change its wording or variables, open the label menu, choose Edit, make the changes, and save.

Streamlabs notes that some plugin changes, such as adding an overlay, may require restarting OBS. Its plugin quick-start guide has the current steps and compatibility details.

Older StreamLabels text-file workflow

A separate Streamlabs support article describes an older method in which the StreamLabels app writes updates to text files. You run the app, log in, choose an output directory, then add a text source in your streaming software and point it at the relevant file—for example, most_recent_follower.txt. The app must remain open for real-time file updates.

That article was published on December 9, 2021 and flags its embedded video as outdated. Because app availability and operating-system compatibility can change, verify those details before following this route. See Streamlabs’ Stream Labels setup article.

Keep labels, chat, and broadcast controls separate

YouTube Live Control Room is for setting up and managing the broadcast, not editing the graphics in an OBS scene. YouTube’s help covers broadcast setup and live chat; OBS’s scene sources and provider overlays handle what viewers see as part of the encoded video. YouTube’s live-streaming guide explains broadcast setup, while its live chat help covers chat features.

Chat is also distinct from a stream label. If you want chat displayed over the video, OBS describes using a third-party overlay in a Browser source; that does not create follower or subscriber labels. See OBS’s chat FAQ.

Troubleshoot a missing or hidden label

  • The label is absent in the scene: confirm that the Browser or text source is in the selected scene and that the provider URL or file path is correct.
  • The Browser source is present but not visible: check its width and height, and confirm that it is positioned within the scene canvas.
  • Another source covers it: move the label above the obscuring source in OBS’s Sources list. Streamlabs specifically advises placing widgets above gameplay when they need to appear over it.
  • The label appears but does not update: review the provider’s label configuration and account/platform connection. If you use the older text-file workflow, make sure its app is still running.
  • The label reports the wrong event or nothing useful: check that the chosen label type is supported for your YouTube account and that you selected the intended event in the provider.
  • A plugin change does not appear: follow the plugin’s current instructions; Streamlabs says some changes may require an OBS restart.

Or let it run in the cloud

Stream labels are scene graphics; StreamNeo solves a different problem: keeping uploaded video running as a 24/7 YouTube live stream. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It does not stream from a camera.

Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. It includes 10 GB of storage per slot (pooled across active slots), playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo for details, then start your free day.
