Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To become a VTuber, choose an avatar format first, then pick tracking software that can use it. Connect the avatar, microphone and game or other content in streaming software, confirm your platform’s live-streaming eligibility, and rehearse the complete setup before your first public stream. You can begin with equipment you already own; a custom model or dedicated tracking phone is not required to try it.
1. Choose what you want to stream and how your avatar should look
Decide whether you want to stream games, chat, draw, make music or create another kind of live content. Then choose how the avatar will appear and move. The key practical choice is its format: Live2D, 3D VRM, or a simple image-based avatar. Your tracking app must support that format, so make this choice before commissioning or building a model.
Live2D: a 2D character with tracked movement
VTube Studio is an option for Live2D Cubism models. It supports webcam tracking and can use a smartphone for tracking; its documentation says phone tracking data can be sent to a PC or Mac over the local network. It does not support VRoid or VRM models, so do not choose it expecting to load a 3D VRM avatar. VTube Studio requirements
3D: check VRM compatibility before choosing software
If you want a VRoid or other VRM model, choose tracking software that explicitly supports VRM. VTube Studio’s documentation points to VSeeFace as an alternative for VRoid/VRM models. This is a compatibility distinction, not a claim that one 3D tracker is best; compare software against your model format, tracking input and desired movement.

Image-based: a simpler starting point
A still image or a small set of images can be a lower-complexity way to represent yourself on screen. Confirm that your chosen avatar software can display and switch the images you plan to use. The material here does not establish a comprehensive comparison of image-avatar tools, so choose based on the specific app’s documented support and the amount of motion you want.
2. Get a model you have permission to use
You can make a model, commission an artist, or use a model whose creator permits your intended use. Before going live, check the license and terms for streaming, monetization, editing, attribution and redistribution. Keep a copy of the permission or license information. The tracking app and avatar model are separate choices: verify the model’s format and import instructions before paying for or building it.
You do not need to commission a custom avatar to find out whether you enjoy streaming. Starting with a permitted model and upgrading later is a sensible way to reduce setup work while you learn what features matter to you.

3. Choose tracking software and check your devices
For VTube Studio, use a Live2D model. The app is available on mobile and desktop. Webcam tracking works with webcams generally; its documentation recommends a webcam resolution of 1280×720 or higher for good eye and blink tracking and says 15–30 FPS is sufficient. These are the vendor’s recommendations, not a promise that every camera or room will track equally well. VTube Studio requirements
Using a phone
A phone is optional if you use webcam tracking. VTube Studio documentation lists iPhone and iPad devices with Face ID and certain devices with an A12-or-newer chip as supported iOS examples. It says recent Android devices should generally work, while older devices may not. Device support can change; check the current requirements page for your exact phone or tablet before buying anything.
The same documentation assesses tracking quality as iOS above webcam above Android. That is VTube Studio’s own assessment, not an independent comparison. If you already have a compatible webcam, test it before deciding that you need a new phone.

Using a webcam
Position the camera so your face is visible and reasonably well lit, then test eye and mouth movement in the tracking app. A webcam capable of at least the documentation’s recommended 1280×720 resolution is a relevant category for this route, but no particular camera model is established as best. Avoid treating a new webcam, microphone or lighting kit as a required purchase if your existing equipment works for a test stream.
4. Make sure your computer can handle the whole stream
Check the tracking app’s requirements, but do not treat its minimum or recommended specifications as a guarantee that your computer can simultaneously run a game, track an avatar, render overlays and encode a stream. VTube Studio’s Steam listing gives specifications for its app; OBS cautions that meeting compatible-system requirements does not guarantee effective streaming or recording. Test the actual combination you plan to use. VTube Studio on Steam · OBS system requirements

5. Connect the avatar, audio and content in streaming software
VTube Studio says it works with OBS, Streamlabs and other streaming software. Set up the avatar and broadcast scene, then confirm that the capture shows the character cleanly without exposing app controls or unrelated windows. VTube Studio on Steam
- Prepare the avatar. Import or open the model in software that supports its format, then test tracking before opening your broadcast.
- Create a scene. In OBS or another streaming app, add the game or content source, avatar capture, microphone and any overlays you need. Keep the first scene simple.
- Check audio. Speak at your normal streaming volume and watch the microphone meter. Listen to a recording or test stream to catch clipping, excessive background noise, muted sources or game audio that overwhelms your voice.
- Check framing and visibility. Make sure the avatar is not hidden behind the game, overlays or chat layout. Confirm the capture does not show tracking software controls or private desktop content.
- Test scene changes. Switch between the scenes you expect to use and verify that the microphone, avatar and content remain visible and audible.
6. Confirm you can go live on your platform
YouTube
YouTube Help states that a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. It also states that streamers must be at least 16. Requirements can depend on account status and may change, so check the current YouTube live-streaming help page before planning a debut. YouTube describes encoder streaming as a route for gameplay, overlays and hardware such as microphones and cameras.
Twitch
Twitch Help says you need a stable internet connection and a video encoder, and identifies OBS among software options. Check Twitch’s current broadcasting guidance for the platform’s current requirements and account-specific conditions.

7. Rehearse the full setup before your first public stream
Where your platform offers a private or unlisted test, use it to rehearse. A recording is also useful for checking audio and layout, but it does not test the platform connection itself. Run the same game or content, avatar, scenes and audio chain you intend to use live.
- Can viewers hear your voice clearly without clipping or distracting noise?
- Does the avatar respond to your expressions and stay on screen while you speak?
- Are the game or other content and overlays framed correctly?
- Do scene changes work without muting the microphone or hiding the avatar?
- Does the stream remain stable during the workload you expect to run?
- Are the displayed model and other content cleared for your intended use?
For gaming streams, check the game publisher’s rules and avoid broadcasting copyrighted music or other material you are not allowed to use. Platform eligibility does not grant rights to third-party material, and a model’s license may impose separate conditions. For YouTube, review its current live-streaming help and applicable copyright guidance before using music, video or artwork you did not create or license.
Common first-stream problems and fixes
- The model will not load: confirm the model format matches the tracker. VTube Studio supports Live2D Cubism, not VRoid/VRM; use software with explicit VRM support for a VRM avatar.
- Tracking is weak or erratic: improve the camera’s view of your face and lighting, check the webcam resolution and frame rate against VTube Studio’s recommendations, and verify phone compatibility if using mobile tracking.
- The avatar appears in the app but not the broadcast: recheck the capture source and selected window in streaming software, then confirm the source is visible in the active scene.
- Viewers cannot hear you: check the selected microphone, mute state and input meter; make a short recording or test stream and listen back.
- The computer slows down or the stream drops frames: test the complete workload, not just the tracker. Close other apps, simplify scenes or lower game settings, then repeat the test.
- You cannot start a YouTube live stream: check channel verification and whether a live-streaming restriction applies; consult YouTube’s current help page for account-specific status.
