You can turn a Twitch moment into a YouTube Short either by sharing the clip directly from Twitch, or by downloading its portrait version and uploading it to YouTube. Twitch clips are limited to 60 seconds; YouTube Shorts can be up to three minutes, but YouTube’s longer limit does not extend the length of a Twitch-created clip.
Choose the right workflow
| Route | Best when | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Twitch direct share | The clip is yours to share and Twitch offers YouTube Shorts as a destination. | Sharing availability depends on clip and account settings. Twitch may prefill recommended title and description text, which you can replace. |
| Download, then upload | You want to review the exported portrait file and control the YouTube upload details yourself. | Create and save a portrait layout in Twitch first if the portrait download is not available. |
| YouTube Studio Clips and Shorts | The broadcast or other source video is already on YouTube. | This makes a Short from the YouTube video; it is not an import of a Twitch clip file. |
Twitch documents direct sharing as an option, but it is not necessarily available for every clip or account. There is no established performance comparison showing that one of these routes gets more views.
Create and frame the Twitch clip
- Open a live Twitch stream or past broadcast and launch the Clip Creator.
- Select the moment you want. Twitch’s clip creation workflow allows a clip of up to 60 seconds.
- Choose portrait (9:16) framing for a vertical Short, or use the suggested framing and adjust it to suit the moment. Twitch’s portrait editor offers stacked and full layouts.
- Preview the result. Check that the gameplay and camera, if both matter, remain visible. Automatic framing is a suggestion, not a guarantee: adjust the crop or layout, or dismiss the suggestion.
- Give the clip a title and publish it. If you edited the layout, apply and save it so Twitch can create the portrait version.
Post directly from Twitch to YouTube Shorts
- Open Twitch’s Clips Manager and locate the clip.
- Use the sharing controls and choose YouTube Shorts if that destination is available. Options can differ between a channel owner and a viewer; sharing another creator’s clip also depends on that streamer’s settings.
- Review the suggested title and description. Replace them as needed, then complete the share flow.
- Check YouTube to confirm that the Short appears as intended and its visibility and audience details are right.
Download the portrait clip and upload it yourself
- In Clips Manager, open the clip’s download options and download the portrait version.
- If the portrait download is missing, Twitch says that portrait version has not yet been created. Return to the clip editor, choose or adjust the portrait layout, apply and save it, then wait for the render to finish before checking again.
- On a computer, open YouTube Studio and select Create > Upload videos. Choose the square or vertical clip file.
- Complete the video details, including title, privacy, and audience settings, then publish when ready.
You can also upload from the YouTube mobile app using a square or vertical video; its editor can trim videos up to three minutes. YouTube’s documented Short limit is up to three minutes for qualifying square or vertical videos. That limit applies to the YouTube upload, not Twitch’s 60-second clip creator.
Make a Short from a YouTube video instead
If your stream recording is already on YouTube, YouTube Studio provides a separate Clips and Shorts workflow. Select the source video, choose Clips and Shorts, select a transcript segment or timestamps (or an available AI suggestion), preview it, and create a draft. Then complete the upload details. In eligible circumstances, YouTube automatically links the source video as a related video. This method works from the YouTube source; it does not transfer a Twitch-exported clip.

Check rights and upload details before publishing
- Video and audio rights: Make sure you have permission to share the clip’s contents, including game footage where applicable, music, and other audio. Twitch prohibits sharing copyrighted material you do not own or have rights to use; its examples include another artist’s songs and background music.
- YouTube copyright: Externally created Shorts using copyright-protected material need approval for use. Otherwise, they may receive a Content ID claim; a valid takedown can remove the Short and result in a copyright strike. A clip being available to export from Twitch does not establish that every element is cleared for YouTube.
- Metadata and audience: Review the title, privacy, and audience selection in YouTube’s upload flow rather than assuming Twitch’s share text or settings settle those choices.

Troubleshooting
You cannot find the YouTube Shorts sharing option
Sharing depends on the clip, account context, and settings. If direct sharing is not offered, download the portrait clip from Clips Manager and upload it through YouTube Studio or the YouTube app.

The clip downloads only in landscape
The portrait version may not have been created yet. Edit the clip’s layout, save it, allow time for rendering, and then check Clips Manager again.
The crop cuts off gameplay or the camera
Reopen the portrait editor, adjust the crop or switch between stacked and full layouts, and preview before applying and saving. Do not rely on the suggested framing without checking it.

The Short is longer than expected or fails the intended format
Twitch’s clip creator is capped at 60 seconds. If you need a longer excerpt, use an eligible source video already on YouTube and the Studio Clips and Shorts workflow, or edit a source video outside Twitch before uploading. YouTube’s up-to-three-minute Shorts allowance does not change Twitch’s clip limit.
You receive a copyright claim or takedown
Review the affected audio and video elements and remove or replace material you are not authorized to use, or obtain the required permission. Exporting a Twitch clip does not clear third-party rights.
