To make a YouTube live stream private, create or schedule it in YouTube Studio, set its visibility to Private, then invite each viewer using the Google account they will use to watch. Send those viewers the stream link too: a link alone does not give an uninvited account access.
Choose the right audience setting
YouTube offers different access models for live streams. Choose based on whether you want to approve named viewers, let anyone with a link watch, or make the stream a channel-member benefit.
| Setting | Who can watch | Account and link | Discoverability and use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private | The channel owner and people specifically invited. | Viewers must sign in to the account invited and open the stream link. Forwarding the link does not authorize another account. | Best for a small, controlled audience. Private videos do not appear on the channel homepage. |
| Unlisted | Anyone who has the link. | Access is based on possession of the link, which viewers can share onward. | Does not appear in YouTube search or the channel’s Videos tab. Use when link-based access is convenient and individual invitations are unnecessary; it is not access limited to named recipients. |
| Members only | Eligible paid members of the channel; access can optionally be limited to selected membership levels. | Eligibility is based on channel membership, not a private invitation to a named account. | Designed as a benefit for channel members, not as a substitute for Private sharing. |
YouTube’s guidance on video privacy settings and members-only live streams explains these separate options.
Check that your channel can go live
YouTube’s general live-streaming requirements, as described in its Help pages accessed October 3, 2026, include a verified channel, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and a streamer who is at least 16 years old. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility guidance before scheduling, because requirements and interface labels can change.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If you are streaming from a phone
Mobile streaming has additional requirements: the channel needs at least 50 subscribers, must be verified, must have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and must have live streaming enabled. YouTube says first activation can take up to 24 hours. It may limit the audience for mobile streams from channels with fewer than 1,000 subscribers; archives for those channels may default to Private. See YouTube’s current mobile live-streaming requirements.
Make a private stream with an encoder
An encoder is software or hardware that sends your video and audio feed to YouTube. YouTube’s documented workflow is to create the stream in Studio, copy its stream URL and key into the encoder, and then start sending the feed.

- Open Live Control Room. Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Create > Go live.
- Create or schedule the stream. Open Stream to create one now, or use Manage > Schedule stream to set it up for later.
- Set visibility to Private. In the stream settings, choose Private. Confirm the setting before you start the broadcast.
- Copy the YouTube connection details. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. In your encoder, paste the URL into its server or URL field and the key into its stream-key field. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Start the encoder feed. Check Live Control Room as the feed arrives, then check the watch page to confirm the stream is available with the intended visibility.
- Invite viewers. Use YouTube’s private-sharing controls to invite the email accounts the viewers will use to sign in. Send them the specific watch link and ask them to open it while signed in to that invited account. YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers the stream connection process.
Start a private stream with a webcam
If you are broadcasting directly through YouTube rather than an encoder, YouTube also documents a webcam route. A webcam is only needed for this route; an encoder or phone-based camera setup does not require you to buy one specifically for YouTube’s webcam workflow.
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live > Webcam.
- Enter the stream details and choose Private for visibility.
- Select the webcam and microphone you want to use.
- Start the stream, then invite viewers through the private-sharing controls using their intended sign-in accounts and send the watch link.
See YouTube’s webcam live-streaming instructions for the current Studio steps.

Help invited viewers get access
If someone you invited cannot watch, check the account and invitation before changing the stream’s visibility.
- Have them open the exact watch link. Private streams are not listed on the channel homepage, so searching the channel may not find the broadcast.
- Confirm they are signed in to the invited account. If they use multiple Google accounts, they may be watching under the wrong one. The email address receiving the invitation must match the account they use to sign in.
- Check the private-sharing list. As the owner, confirm that the correct email/account was invited and that the intended viewer is using it.
- Do not rely on forwarding the link. A person who receives a forwarded link still needs to be among the invited accounts.
YouTube lists these checks in its help page for viewers who cannot see private videos.

Check the replay after the broadcast
After the stream, open YouTube Studio’s Content > Live area and verify the replay’s visibility separately. The archive does not necessarily have the privacy setting you want, so change it in Studio if needed. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup; see its live-stream archive guidance.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream from uploaded videos rather than a live camera broadcast, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home internet connection do not need to stay on.
