These highlights are not shown to viewers. If you want a message displayed on the broadcast itself, that is a separate overlay workflow—not the Creator Chat Highlights feature.
Set up Twitch Creator Chat Highlights
- Open your channel chat. The chat settings are available wherever that channel chat is available.
- Click the Settings icon, then select Chat Highlights.
- Toggle the highlight categories you want to see. Twitch provides default and minimized display modes; choose the one that suits your chat view.
- If useful, enable the option to add a shortcut at the bottom of chat.
Twitch’s interface and options may change. Its help page does not specify a software version or geographic availability. See Twitch Help’s Chat Highlights instructions.
What the highlight categories mean
- Suspicious users: surfaces users Twitch identifies as suspicious.
- First-time chat: draws attention to someone chatting in the channel for the first time.
- Returning chatters: Twitch defines these as new viewers who have chatted at least twice in the last 30 days.
- Raiders: highlights participants arriving through a raid. You can choose a highlight duration of 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, or 4 hours.
- @ mentions: highlights messages that mention you.
- Moderators, VIPs, and subscribers: identifies messages from those channel roles or subscriber groups.
Can viewers see the highlighted messages?
No. Twitch says: “Highlights are not visible to viewers. Creators and moderators can see all highlights.” The feature changes how chat activity is surfaced to the channel’s creator and moderators; it does not put a message over gameplay or another live scene.
How to show a chat message on the broadcast
Use a separate on-screen chat overlay or platform feature if you want viewers to see a selected message over the stream. The Twitch Creator Chat Highlights instructions do not document how to select, style, or display a viewer-visible message overlay, so the precise steps depend on the tool and streaming setup you use. Do not mistake Twitch’s post-stream Highlighter or stream markers for this: those tools mark parts of a past broadcast for later clips or highlights, rather than displaying a live chat message to viewers.
