To go live on YouTube, first confirm your channel is eligible, then choose the simplest setup that fits your content: a phone for mobile updates, a webcam for a straightforward computer stream, or an encoder for gameplay, screen sharing, external equipment, and more production control. Test the stream and its audio before your audience arrives.
Choose a streaming setup that fits your content
YouTube supports live streaming from a mobile device, a webcam, or an encoder. Start with equipment you already have; add complexity only when your format needs it.
| Setup | Best for | Mobility and complexity | Screen capture and production control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mobile device | Quick updates, vlogging, and streaming while away from a computer | Most mobile; a straightforward option when the channel meets mobile requirements | Less suited to multi-source productions than an encoder workflow |
| Webcam | A simple stream from a computer | Low setup complexity | Less production flexibility than an encoder |
| Encoder | Gameplay, screen sharing, external audio/video hardware, multiple cameras or microphones, and more involved productions | Requires configuring encoder software or hardware and a reliable upload connection | Supports screen capture, multiple sources, and finer production control |
YouTube says expensive equipment is not required to begin. For an encoder-based casual or gaming stream, a microphone, webcam, and headphones are common options, not mandatory purchases. Advanced productions may add multiple microphones and cameras, a mixer, or a hardware encoder. A USB microphone can improve local voice capture; a webcam is useful for on-camera presentation. An Ethernet cable or USB Ethernet adapter may help stabilize a particular setup, but it cannot provide upload bandwidth your internet connection does not have. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
Check eligibility before you schedule
- Your channel must be verified and must not have had live streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, according to YouTube’s general live streaming tips.
- Mobile streaming has additional requirements: at least 50 subscribers, channel verification, enabled live streaming, and a supported mobile device.
- First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Enable access well before the event rather than waiting until stream day.
Requirements can change. Check YouTube’s live streaming tips and the current mobile live streaming requirements before you plan around a specific eligibility threshold.

Set up a mobile or webcam stream
Mobile
Once mobile live streaming is enabled and your device meets YouTube’s requirements, use YouTube’s mobile live workflow to start a stream. This is the simplest route for a quick update or vlog when you do not need an encoder’s screen capture and source controls. Check framing, microphone pickup, and connection quality before starting.
Webcam
For a straightforward computer stream, use YouTube’s webcam workflow and the computer’s connected camera and microphone. Confirm that the intended camera and audio input are selected, then check the preview before starting. If you need to capture gameplay or a computer screen, combine sources, or add overlays, use an encoder instead.

Set up an encoder stream step by step
- Enable live streaming. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. If this is the channel’s first activation, allow up to 24 hours for access.
- Create or select a stream. Connect the microphone, webcam, headset, capture equipment, or other supported hardware to the computer and encoder. Make sure the encoder is using the intended devices.
- Connect YouTube and the encoder. In the encoder’s streaming settings, enter the YouTube server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Reset it through YouTube if it is compromised.
- Configure and start the encoder. Apply the settings below, then start the encoder and wait for its preview to appear in Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, follow the Studio workflow to start the event after the preview appears.
- Check the preview before going live. Confirm the image, audio, and framing, and make sure the stream appears as expected. YouTube recommends preparing in advance and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event.
- Monitor the stream. Watch stream health and audio/video quality during the event. For an archive or backup encoder, verify that the archive is being written and that failover works.
See YouTube’s full encoder workflow for its current Live Control Room process.
Choose encoder settings your connection can sustain
Match the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. For H.264, YouTube’s recommended bitrate ranges are:

| Resolution and frame rate | Recommended H.264 bitrate range |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5–14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6–17 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3–8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3–8 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a given internet connection can sustain the stream. YouTube also lists AV1 and H.265/HEVC options and additional resolution-specific ranges; check its current encoder settings and bitrate table when using a different codec or resolution.
- Codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as video codec options.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s guidance supports up to 60 fps. Use a frame rate that matches the content and your computer’s and connection’s capacity.
- Bitrate mode: YouTube recommends constant bitrate encoding.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says it should not exceed four seconds.
- Protocol: For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends RTMPS.
Do not choose settings solely because your computer can encode them. A higher resolution or frame rate needs more upload capacity and may be less reliable if the connection fluctuates.

Measure upload capacity and leave headroom
Test upload speed on the connection and at the location you will use for the stream. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload bandwidth headroom. Account for the full stream bitrate, any backup stream, and other devices or people using the same network; advertised download speed does not tell you how much upload capacity is available to the encoder. A realistic rehearsal is more informative than relying on a speed test alone. YouTube’s streaming tips
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Preflight the stream before viewers arrive
- Confirm channel verification, live streaming access, and any mobile-specific eligibility well ahead of the event.
- Rehearse using representative speech, movement, and the actual stream format. Check that the chosen resolution and frame rate remain stable.
- Check measured upload capacity and preserve headroom for the stream, a backup feed if used, and other network traffic.
- Confirm the encoder preview, picture, and sound before starting the event. Listen for clipping, missing audio, or unwanted background sound.
- Check that the stream is available on the channel or watch page and on a mobile device; continue monitoring quality once live.
- If you rely on a local archive or backup encoder, verify that the archive is being written and that failover works.
- Use only video, music, and other material you have permission to stream. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream rules before using third-party content.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start a stream | Live streaming is not enabled, the channel is not verified, a restriction applies, or first-time activation is still processing | Check access and channel status in YouTube Studio; allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. For mobile, verify the additional eligibility requirements. |
| Live Control Room does not receive the encoder feed | The stream key or server URL is incorrect, the encoder has not started, or the connection is unavailable | Recheck the server URL and key in the encoder’s streaming settings, then start the encoder and wait for preview. If the key may have been exposed, reset it rather than sharing it. |
| Video stutters or stream health degrades | Upload capacity is insufficient or variable, other network users are consuming capacity, or the chosen bitrate is too demanding | Test upload speed during a realistic rehearsal, leave the recommended headroom, account for backup-stream traffic, and lower bitrate or resolution if needed. |
| Viewers cannot hear you or hear poor audio | The wrong input is selected, a microphone is disconnected, or the audio level is unsuitable | Confirm the encoder’s selected microphone and connection, then speak during the preview and rehearse with headphones. |
| The stream appears late or a scheduled event does not begin | The encoder feed has not reached preview, or the scheduled-event start step has not been completed in Studio | Start the encoder early, wait for the preview, then follow the Studio workflow to start the scheduled event. |
