You can automatically queue new channel uploads by using the YouTube Data API to read your channel’s uploads playlist and add eligible videos to a separate destination playlist. The key operation is playlistItems.insert, authorized through OAuth for the channel that owns the destination playlist. This automates playlist updates—not the live broadcast itself.
What the automation does—and what it does not
YouTube maintains a special uploads playlist for each channel. An automation can check that playlist for new videos, then add them to a regular playlist that your streaming workflow uses. The uploads playlist is the source, not the destination: YouTube does not support inserting items into the channel’s uploaded-videos playlist (YouTube Data API: playlistItems.insert).
A playlist and a live broadcast are separate. Adding an item to a playlist does not start, update, or keep a broadcast running. YouTube’s playlist API handles playlist contents; Live Control Room, an encoder, and YouTube’s live tools handle the stream (YouTube Live API overview; Manage live stream settings).
Set up automatic queueing with the YouTube Data API
1. Create a separate destination playlist
In YouTube Studio, create or identify an ordinary playlist for the stream queue, and keep its playlist ID. You can manage playlists manually in Studio, including their order and privacy, but YouTube’s reviewed Studio guidance does not describe a rule that automatically adds future uploads to an ordinary playlist (Manage playlists in YouTube Studio).

Do not use the special uploads playlist as the destination. Your automation reads from that playlist and writes eligible videos to the separate queue playlist.
2. Authorize the channel with OAuth
Configure an application to obtain OAuth authorization from the channel owner. The insert operation requires permission to manage the destination playlist. The YouTube API documents the youtube, youtube.force-ssl, and youtubepartner scopes; the partner scope is for eligible content partners. Review the current API reference when choosing a scope, since authorization details may change (playlistItems.insert authorization).
3. Find the channel’s uploads playlist
Retrieve the channel resource and read its uploads playlist ID, then use playlistItems.list to inspect its items. YouTube exposes the uploads playlist ID through the channel resource, and playlist items can be listed through the PlaylistItems API (Channels; PlaylistItems).

Run this check on a schedule or reconcile the source and destination periodically. Record which video IDs have already been handled, but also check the destination before inserting: duplicate items can be rejected. Define how the automation treats private, deleted, inaccessible, or otherwise ineligible videos instead of assuming every upload can be queued.

For each new video, send a POST request to playlistItems.insert. The request body must include snippet.playlistId for the destination playlist and snippet.resourceId identifying the video. The API documents an insertion cost of 50 quota units per call (Google’s current YouTube Data API reference, accessed 2026-10-03; playlistItems.insert).
If queue order matters, choose the item’s position deliberately. Reconcile the destination against your intended queue so that a missed run, a retry, or a manual playlist edit does not silently leave the order wrong. The API supports a playlist-item position field; the exact behavior of a particular 24/7 player or workflow is not established by the API documentation.

5. Handle API errors and retries
Build explicit handling for errors rather than treating every failed request as a temporary outage. YouTube documents errors involving duplicate videos, inaccessible items, invalid or missing IDs, unsupported playlist operations, and playlists at their maximum item count (YouTube Data API errors).
- Duplicate: Check whether the video is already in the destination and mark it handled without adding a second copy.
- Inaccessible or ineligible video: Skip it or flag it for review; do not retry indefinitely without a change in access or eligibility.
- Invalid ID or unsupported operation: Verify that the playlist ID is the ordinary destination playlist and that the resource ID identifies the intended video.
- Playlist at its maximum size: Remove or archive items according to your queue policy before attempting further inserts.
- Quota or transient request failures: Track usage and retry transient failures with a controlled backoff. The API’s documented per-insert cost is 50 quota units, so a high-volume schedule should account for quota.
Configure the 24/7 broadcast separately
Once playlist automation works, configure the actual broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room and your encoder or other stream-hosting workflow. Set the stream key and ingest details there, then test stream health; playlist insertion does not configure any of these broadcast settings (Manage live stream settings; Choose live encoder settings).

If your queue consists of gaming recordings, make sure you have the rights needed for the video and its audio, and consider whether the channel’s use of repeated or reused material complies with YouTube’s applicable policies. A playlist automation cannot establish that you have those rights or guarantee that a broadcast is eligible to remain live.

YouTube documents the manual playlist controls in its Studio help and the insertion workflow in its API reference (Studio playlist management; API insert). Neither option, by itself, hosts a 24/7 stream.
Common problems and fixes
The insert request is rejected
Check the OAuth account and permissions, confirm that the destination playlist is an ordinary playlist, and verify both required IDs. Inserting into the channel’s uploads playlist is unsupported. Consult the API’s error details for duplicate, inaccessible-item, invalid-ID, and playlist-limit cases (API errors).

A video appears in the queue twice—or not at all
Keep a record of processed video IDs and check the destination playlist before each insert. On a missed or interrupted run, reconcile source and destination rather than blindly replaying every insert. Investigate access or eligibility if a source item cannot be added.
The playlist changes, but the live stream does not
This is a separation of systems, not necessarily a failed insert. Confirm the item is in the intended playlist, then check what playlist or media source the broadcast workflow actually consumes. Configure and monitor the encoder, stream key, and broadcast independently.
The queue stops growing
Check that the scheduled source scan is still running, that it is reading the channel’s current uploads playlist, and that OAuth authorization remains valid. Review API errors and quota usage, including the 50-unit cost per insert, before increasing the scan or retry frequency.
