What Is Real-Time Communication in Video Streaming?

Real-time streaming is defined by whether the delay suits the interaction. Understand glass-to-glass latency and how WebRTC differs from low-latency HLS and DASH.

Real-time communication in video streaming means audio and video reach another person quickly enough to support the interaction taking place. A two-way game stream with live audience participation has a different latency requirement from a large broadcast where viewers can tolerate a short delay. The useful measure is end-to-end, or “glass-to-glass,” latency—not the speed of any one part of the delivery chain.

What does “real-time” mean in video streaming?

“Real-time” is relative to the task, not a universal latency threshold. A conversation becomes difficult when participants repeatedly talk over one another because of delay. A live esports broadcast may still feel live even when viewers see the action later than it happened, particularly if the audience is watching rather than communicating with the players.

In streaming, glass-to-glass latency is the time between an event happening in the real world and the corresponding video appearing on a viewer’s device. It includes the full path through capture, encoding, transport, processing, delivery, buffering and playback. Measuring only encoder delay or network transit time cannot tell you the viewer’s actual delay.

How WebRTC and low-latency HTTP streaming differ

WebRTC and low-latency versions of HLS and DASH address related but distinct needs. WebRTC is intended for interactive multimedia exchange. LL-HLS and LL-DASH reduce delay in one-to-many live delivery while retaining HTTP-based distribution approaches. Neither label alone guarantees a particular end-to-end result.

Decision point WebRTC / RTP LL-HLS / LL-DASH
Typical purpose Interactive, real-time media exchange, such as a conversation or a session where participants need prompt feedback. Live distribution to an audience when lower delay than conventional segmented streaming is useful, but conversational interaction is not essential.
Delivery model Real-time media protocols are designed to handle communication across network intermediaries such as firewalls, relays and NAT devices. Do not assume every WebRTC session is a direct peer-to-peer connection. HTTP delivery can use ordinary web servers and CDNs. LL-HLS retains HLS’s scalable delivery model; LL-DASH is another low-latency live option.
Latency expectations Suitable when prompt feedback matters, but actual glass-to-glass latency depends on the system, network and playback path. Apple engineer Roger Pantos described a one-to-two-second LL-HLS design target in 2019 for delivery at scale over the public internet with a reasonable round-trip time. That was a design goal, not a guarantee for every deployment.
Important trade-off The real-time media system and network path need to be engineered for the interaction the application requires. Low-latency playback can be more susceptible to visible disruption from temporary network conditions, and the player and delivery system need to support the relevant low-latency features.

What is WebRTC?

WebRTC is a standards-based family for real-time multimedia communication in browsers and between browsers and other entities. The IETF’s RFC 8835 describes it as “a protocol suite aimed at real-time multimedia exchange between browsers, and between browsers and other entities.” Its standards cover transport and security requirements as well as the challenges of communication across network intermediaries.

That makes WebRTC a natural choice when the application depends on people responding to one another quickly. It does not mean every WebRTC call will have identical latency: network conditions, routing, system design and the endpoints all affect the end-to-end experience.

What are HLS, LL-HLS and LL-DASH?

HLS

HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) delivers live and on-demand media over HTTP. Apple describes it as designed to work with ordinary web servers and CDNs and to adapt playback to network conditions. Conventional segmented delivery is useful for broad distribution, but its segments and player buffering can add delay.

LL-HLS

Low-Latency HLS extends HLS with mechanisms including partial media segments, playlist delta updates, blocking playlist reloads and preload hints. These features are intended to reduce delay while retaining the scalable HTTP delivery approach. The player and delivery chain must support the extensions for them to help.

LL-DASH

Low-Latency DASH is another HTTP-based approach. IETF operational guidance discusses the use of smaller CMAF chunks to decouple latency from the duration of a complete media segment. As with LL-HLS, the actual result depends on the full delivery and playback implementation.

How to choose an approach

  • Choose WebRTC when interaction is the priority. If people need to converse, respond to gameplay, or otherwise react promptly to one another, select a system designed for real-time exchange.
  • Consider LL-HLS or LL-DASH when audience-scale distribution matters and some delay is acceptable. HTTP delivery can use established web servers and CDNs, while the low-latency extensions aim to bring playback closer to the live event.
  • Check the entire playback path. Confirm that the encoder, origin or service, CDN where applicable, player and target devices support the chosen approach. A low-latency protocol feature at one stage does not by itself establish the viewer’s glass-to-glass delay.
  • Balance delay against robustness. Lower latency leaves less room for buffering around transient network changes, so the right choice depends on whether promptness or uninterrupted playback matters more for the experience.

There is no universal protocol ranking. Decide from the needed level of interaction, expected audience scale, platform and player support, network conditions, and the amount of delay or disruption the experience can tolerate.

Why can a live stream still be behind real time?

“Live” describes a stream’s relationship to an ongoing event, not a promise that every viewer sees it instantly. Glass-to-glass delay accumulates across capture, encoding, delivery and playback; buffering can also protect playback from changes in network conditions. If low delay is important, assess the viewer’s end-to-end experience and confirm that the player and delivery setup support the relevant low-latency mode rather than relying on a single component’s latency figure.

Where always-on prerecorded streams fit

A prerecorded video loop is not real-time communication: it does not create a live exchange between participants. If your separate goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud service for that job. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams to YouTube only.
