You can earn from YouTube live streams through ads, viewer payments, memberships, Shopping, Premium viewing and brand partnerships—but each route has its own eligibility rules, location limits and workload. Start by checking which features your channel can use in YouTube Studio; none guarantees a particular income.
Check eligibility before choosing a revenue stream
YouTube monetization requires applying for and being accepted to the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). YouTube lists an entry tier for certain features at 500 subscribers, three public uploads in the preceding 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified public watch hours on long-form videos in 365 days or 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. A higher threshold lists 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified watch hours or 10 million qualified Shorts views.
These thresholds do not automatically unlock every feature. Feature-specific requirements, regional availability, channel standing and applicable terms still matter. For fan-funding features, YouTube lists YPP membership, age 18 or older, availability in the creator’s region and acceptance of relevant terms among the minimum requirements. Check the Earn section in YouTube Studio and the feature’s current eligibility details before building a plan around it.
Live streams are subject to YouTube’s channel monetization, copyright, Community Guidelines and advertiser-friendly content policies. A stream can be technically eligible for monetization yet have ads limited or unavailable, and specific features may not be offered for every channel, stream or country.

Eight ways to monetize a YouTube live stream
1. Live-stream ads
Once your channel is eligible and monetization is enabled for a stream, YouTube may serve ads before or during it. YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled when stream monetization is on; mid-rolls can be automatic or inserted manually. You can choose the available mid-roll approach in live control room settings.
Ad delivery is not assured: YouTube states, “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” Whether an eligible slot receives an ad depends on YouTube’s ad systems and viewer circumstances. The published 55% share of net revenues applies to ads displayed or streamed on public Watch Page videos, including eligible public videos streamed in YouTube’s player on other sites or apps; it is not a universal share for every type of creator income.
2. Super Chat
Super Chat lets eligible viewers pay to make a message stand out in live chat. It is a one-time viewer purchase, not a recurring subscription. It is available only where the feature and channel qualify, and live chat must be enabled.
Rank #2
- Ideal for Gifting
- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
Super Chat is unavailable on certain content, including age-restricted, unlisted, private and made-for-kids videos, and videos with YouTube Giving fundraisers. Geographic and other eligibility restrictions also apply, so check the stream’s monetization controls rather than assuming the option will appear.

3. Super Stickers
Super Stickers are paid animated images that viewers can surface in live chat. Like Super Chat, they are direct, one-time fan purchases, with availability dependent on channel, stream and regional eligibility. They share the restrictions for certain content types and require live chat to be enabled.
4. Channel memberships
Channel memberships provide recurring monthly payments in exchange for creator-defined perks. Depending on what you offer, perks can include badges, emoji or members-only benefits. The recurring model can suit a channel with an audience that returns regularly, but it also creates an ongoing responsibility to deliver and manage the promised benefits.
Rank #3
YouTube’s stated Commerce Product Module share is 70% of net revenues for participating partners’ channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers and Super Thanks. This is a platform revenue share, not an estimate of how much a particular channel will earn.
5. Sell your own products through YouTube Shopping
YouTube’s live-stream guidance describes showcasing personally branded products so viewers can browse and buy. This route earns through product sales rather than ad delivery or a chat payment. It also involves product availability, customer service and fulfillment responsibilities; the platform feature does not remove those business tasks.
6. Showcase other brands’ products through YouTube Shopping
YouTube also describes featuring products from other brands in a live stream. Whether this option is available depends on the channel and market. Confirm the precise feature and terms presented for your account; YouTube’s live guidance does not establish a particular third-party affiliate program, commission rate or payment schedule.
Rank #4
7. YouTube Premium viewing revenue
A creator may receive a share of a Premium subscriber’s fee when that subscriber watches eligible content. This is viewing-based revenue, not a direct payment made in live chat. Its value depends on eligible viewing and is not a fixed per-view rate that can be promised in advance.
8. Brand partnerships
YouTube recognizes brand partnerships as a way creators can earn. A sponsor may pay for an agreed placement or collaboration, but finding partners, negotiating terms and delivering the agreed work are separate from enabling a YouTube monetization feature. YouTube does not guarantee sponsorships or establish a standard deal amount; disclose commercial relationships as required by applicable rules.
How the options differ
| Method | Who pays or generates revenue | When revenue is tied to | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|---|
| Live ads | Advertisers, through YouTube ad delivery | Ads served around or during eligible stream viewing | YPP and stream eligibility; ad slots may not serve |
| Super Chat | Viewer | One-time highlighted live-chat message | Feature, regional and content restrictions; live chat must be enabled |
| Super Stickers | Viewer | One-time animated chat sticker purchase | Feature, regional and content restrictions; live chat must be enabled |
| Memberships | Member | Recurring monthly payment | Eligibility plus ongoing delivery of member perks |
| Your products via Shopping | Product buyer | Product purchase | Channel and feature availability; product and fulfillment work |
| Other brands’ products via Shopping | Buyer, subject to the applicable arrangement | Product purchase, if the available feature terms provide for creator earnings | Market and channel availability; confirm the terms shown for your account |
| Premium viewing | YouTube Premium viewing revenue | Eligible content watched by Premium subscribers | Depends on eligible viewing; not a live-chat payment |
| Brand partnerships | Brand | Negotiated sponsored work | Requires finding and fulfilling a suitable agreement; no guaranteed deal |
Where Super Thanks fits
Super Thanks is another YPP fan-funding feature, but it applies to highlighted comments on eligible long-form videos and Shorts rather than serving as a direct live-chat feature. It may be relevant to an eligible stream replay or related video, not as a substitute for Super Chat or Super Stickers during a live broadcast.

Plan around the right kind of work, not a promised payout
YouTube does not publish a typical YouTube Live creator income figure in the materials cited here, so avoid planning from unsupported monthly averages or per-view promises. Instead, choose methods that fit the channel and the work you can sustain.
- If viewers actively participate in chat, check whether Super Chat and Super Stickers are available for your channel and the specific stream.
- If you can consistently provide worthwhile member benefits, evaluate whether memberships suit your audience and schedule.
- If your stream naturally features products, check Shopping availability and account terms before relying on product sales or brand-product features.
- If your audience watches replays or other eligible content, consider ads and Premium viewing as viewing-based routes, without assuming every view monetizes.
- If a brand is a good fit, treat the partnership as a separately negotiated business arrangement rather than an automatic platform benefit.
Keep a continuous stream running without leaving a computer on
If your format is a prerecorded playlist loop that should stay live on YouTube, you can run it yourself from a computer with streaming software and a reliable connection, but that setup depends on your own equipment and power staying available. For live formats driven by a camera or gameplay, use a setup suited to that live production; a prerecorded-video looping service is not a camera broadcast tool.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
