The exact connection values and open ports depend on your server, chosen application, protocol, and network.
What Wowza Streaming Engine Manager does
Wowza Streaming Engine Manager is the browser interface for managing the Streaming Engine server, its applications, and its status. The Server area handles server and virtual-host settings; Applications is where you work with live and video-on-demand applications. The homepage also shows source and playback connections, resource usage, and application connection settings. Wowza’s Manager documentation describes these areas and their roles.
Before you configure a stream
- Install and license a supported Wowza Streaming Engine version. Wowza’s installation guide, updated July 24, 2026, includes version 4.12.0 installer examples; check Wowza’s current downloads and licensing information before choosing a version. See the installation guide.
- Have a live source ready: a camera or software/hardware encoder that can publish using a protocol supported by your application. OBS is one software-encoder example, not a requirement.
- Know the connection details for your particular deployment: server address, application name, stream name or key, protocol, and source credentials if required. These are not universal values.
- Plan firewall and network access for the protocols you will use. Wowza lists default ports, but the necessary set depends on configuration. Ports cannot be shared between services, and remote Manager access requires deliberate configuration.
Install, check the server, and sign in
- Confirm system requirements and install. Follow Wowza’s installation guide for your operating system and deployment. During installation, create the administrator username and password.
- Check the server response. From a machine with appropriate network access, open
http://[wowza-ip-address]:1935/ServerVersion, replacing the bracketed text with the server’s address. This is a documented server check, not a publishing address. - Open Manager. Browse to
http://[wowza-ip-address]:8088/enginemanagerand sign in using the administrator credentials created during installation. These example addresses use HTTP; use the access and security configuration appropriate to your deployment. - Account for remote access separately. Wowza says administration connections default to localhost. A public IP address alone does not make Manager remotely accessible or safely configured. Set up remote access for your deployment rather than exposing the administration interface without appropriate controls. Wowza’s remote-connection documentation explains the connection considerations.
Choose the right live application
A live application is the server-side destination to which an encoder publishes. Choose based on where the stream originates and where it needs to go:
| Application type | Use it when |
|---|---|
| Live Single server | A single Streaming Engine server receives the live source and delivers it directly to players. This is the simplest direct-delivery setup. |
| Live Origin | The server acts as an origin that delivers streams to other Wowza servers. |
| Live Edge | The server ingests streams from an origin as part of an origin-and-edge distribution design. |
| Live HTTP Origin | The stream is delivered to HTTP caching infrastructure. |
These application types describe different delivery architectures, not interchangeable beginner presets. For a first stream that a player will receive from the same server, select or create a Live Single server application. The exact application name and configuration depend on your installation. Review Wowza’s live-application guidance.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set up source authentication
By default, RTMP- and RTSP-based encoders must provide source username and password credentials before publishing to a live application. In Manager, go to Server > Source Authentication to create or manage a source account. Enter the matching username and password in the encoder; the documented credential values are case-sensitive. See Wowza’s source-authentication instructions.
Do not confuse source credentials with the Manager administrator login. If your publishing protocol or application is configured differently, follow the settings for that deployment rather than assuming the RTMP/RTSP default applies unchanged.

Enter the encoder’s publishing details
In the encoder or camera, configure the server address, application, stream name or key, protocol, and source credentials as required by the selected application. A live source is the camera or encoder publishing to Streaming Engine; its connection information comes from your server and application configuration. Wowza’s example uses OBS with a custom server and stream key, but its demonstration values are not production settings. Follow the OBS example as a configuration walkthrough, substituting your own details.
- Check that the encoder supports the protocol selected for the application.
- Confirm that its interface allows you to set the server/application address and stream name or key.
- If the application requires source authentication, match the case-sensitive credentials exactly.
- Do not copy a sample host or stream name, including a trial-server address or a demo value such as
myStream, into a production configuration.
Open only the ports your streaming path needs
Wowza documents these default ports: TCP 1935 for RTMP-family and related streaming traffic; TCP 8086–8088 for administration; UDP 6970–9999 for RTP/UDP streaming; TCP 80 for HLS, MPEG-DASH, and RTMPT; TCP 443 for TLS streaming such as RTMPS, HTTPS, and WebRTC; and TCP 554 for RTSP. The list is not a requirement to open every port for every setup. Select the ports needed by your chosen protocols and configuration, and ensure firewalls allow that traffic. Check Wowza’s firewall guidance.

In an enterprise network, coordinate with the network administrator. On a home or office network, inbound connections may also require router port forwarding. Administration ports and public streaming ports serve different purposes; do not treat enabling remote Manager access as a side effect of opening a media port.
Publish and verify the incoming stream
- Start the encoder’s stream using the connection details configured for your application.
- In Manager, open Applications > your live application > Incoming Streams.
- Confirm that the incoming source appears with an Active status. Starting the encoder alone does not establish that Wowza has received the stream.
- Test playback with a client such as VLC using the playback address appropriate to your application and protocol. Wowza’s beginner tutorial demonstrates a local VLC playback check; use your own configured playback URL. See the VLC playback walkthrough.
- Watch Manager’s status area for source and playback connections, CPU, Java heap, memory, and disk usage. These indicators can help separate an ingest or playback problem from a broader server-capacity issue.
Troubleshoot the first stream
| What you see | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Manager does not load | Server availability, Manager address, administration access, or firewall rules | Check the server version endpoint, confirm the Manager address and port for your deployment, and verify that administration access is configured. Remote access is not enabled merely by using a public IP. |
| Encoder cannot connect | Wrong host, application, protocol, or blocked network port | Compare the encoder settings with the actual server and application configuration. Check that the required port is open end to end. |
| Authentication fails | Missing or mismatched source account for RTMP/RTSP publishing | Review Server > Source Authentication; enter the corresponding username and password in the encoder, preserving letter case. |
| Encoder reports streaming, but no active incoming source appears | Incorrect stream name/key, application destination, or protocol mismatch | Verify the publishing details and protocol against the selected live application, then restart publishing and check Incoming Streams again. |
| Source is active, but playback fails | Playback URL/protocol, player connectivity, or delivery-port configuration | Test with a client using the playback address configured for the application. Check the relevant delivery protocol and network path separately from the source connection. |
| Connections work intermittently or the server appears constrained | Network path or server resource pressure | Check Manager’s connection and resource indicators, then investigate the affected network segment or server resource rather than changing unrelated application features. |
