The right settings depend on the destination and the upload connection—not just the encoder. Match the platform’s protocol and media requirements, test with representative gameplay or other motion, and monitor stream health while live.
How a live streaming workflow works
- Capture and compose: Collect the game, camera, screen, and audio sources you need, then arrange them in a broadcast tool. Broadcaster options include software encoders, consoles, and dedicated hardware encoders; the appropriate choice depends on your sources and available processing capacity. Twitch Developers documents these encoder categories.
- Encode: The encoder turns the composed audio and video into a stream using a destination-compatible codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval. These settings work together: a higher resolution or frame rate generally requires more bitrate to preserve detail.
- Connect and send: Enter the platform’s ingest address and authorization details, such as a stream key, and send the encoded stream using an accepted protocol. Twitch documents RTMP ingest URLs and stream keys. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport and also describes HLS for certain capabilities. The Google Cloud Live Stream API supports RTMP_PUSH and SRT_PUSH. Those choices are service-specific, not interchangeable defaults.
- Platform processing and playback: A platform may create multiple playback versions, or renditions, at different resolutions, frame rates, or bitrates. YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams. OBS defines transcoding as producing those different versions and notes that access can depend on platform and account conditions.
- Test and monitor: Test the full path before the event, then keep an eye on the platform’s stream-health indicators during the broadcast. A bitrate that a platform supports is not proof that your connection can sustain it reliably.
Choose settings for the destination
There is no universal live encoder preset. Check the destination’s current requirements for protocol, codec, bitrate, frame rate, resolution, audio, and keyframe interval. Settings copied from another service may not work or may deliver poor results.
YouTube Live baseline
YouTube Help’s “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions” page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among its options. It supports frame rates up to 60 fps, specifies constant bitrate (CBR), and lists AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. These are YouTube recommendations, not rules for every platform. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.
Selected YouTube recommended video bitrates from that page are shown below. The codec changes the recommendation even at the same resolution and frame rate.

| Output | AV1 or H.265 | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S); its guidance says HLS may be considered if an encoder lacks the needed RTMP capability. Check the current YouTube instructions and confirm your encoder supports the particular combination you intend to use.
Do not apply one service’s bitrate table to another
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API publishes its own input recommendations and output rendition ladder. For example, its listed H.264 output for 1920×1080 at 50 or 60 fps is 9,000 Kbps. That is an API output-rendition figure, not a replacement for YouTube’s encoder recommendation above. Google Cloud says SRT is preferred over RTMP for its Live Stream API when endpoints and encoders support it, citing features including packet-drop recovery and forward error correction. See Google Cloud Live Stream API best practices.

Select an encoding path
Software, console, and dedicated hardware are all legitimate ways to encode a live broadcast. Decide based on the sources you need to capture, the processing capacity available, and the destination’s requirements—not on an assumption that every creator needs a dedicated encoder.
- Software encoder: Useful when your computer can capture and encode the sources at the required settings without compromising game or production performance.
- Console workflow: A reasonable option when the console and platform integration support the broadcast you want. Confirm which settings and sources that particular workflow exposes.
- Dedicated hardware encoder: An optional path when a separate encoding device better fits the production setup. Twitch lists hardware encoders alongside software encoders and consoles; its cited developer page does not establish that a specific model is necessary.
OBS’s explanation of transcoding is useful for distinguishing the encoder’s job from the platform’s: your encoder sends a source stream, while a platform may make alternate playback renditions. Availability of those renditions varies by service and account conditions. Read OBS’s transcoding explanation.

Make the upload connection part of the plan
Resolution and frame rate affect bitrate needs, but connection quality determines whether the chosen output can reach the ingest endpoint consistently. YouTube recommends running a speed test, testing with representative sound and motion, and monitoring stream health during the event. Fast action in a game can stress an encode differently from a static menu, so test footage that resembles the actual broadcast.
- Measure the connection you will use for the event, rather than relying on a result from a different network or time.
- Choose an output the connection can sustain with headroom for normal variation; do not treat a platform’s maximum or recommended bitrate as a guarantee.
- Run a test stream with the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, audio, and keyframe interval.
- Watch stream-health warnings during the broadcast and reduce output demands if the connection cannot maintain them.
Connect safely and diagnose common failures
Before going live
- Open the destination’s live-stream setup and copy its current ingest address and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. Do not share the key; anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Select a protocol and codec supported by both the destination and your encoder. For YouTube, use RTMPS when following its encrypted-transport recommendation.
- Set resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio format, and keyframe frequency to match the destination’s current guidance.
- Start a private or otherwise suitable test if available, and confirm both the platform preview and stream-health status before the event.
When the stream does not behave as expected
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The platform does not receive the stream | Ingest address, stream key, protocol, or destination setup | Verify the current address and key in the platform’s live setup, check for accidental whitespace or an outdated key, and confirm the encoder is using a protocol the destination accepts. |
| Warnings or interruptions related to stream health | Upload consistency or an output bitrate too demanding for the connection | Test the event connection, lower bitrate or output demands, and run another test with representative motion. |
| The picture looks soft or breaks up during motion | Bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or codec combination | Compare the actual settings with the destination’s recommendations; choose a sustainable combination rather than raising resolution alone. |
| Latency or delivery behavior differs from expectations | Platform mode, protocol, or viewer playback processing | Check the destination’s supported low-latency modes and transport guidance. A protocol’s features matter only when the encoder and ingest endpoint both support it. |
| Some viewers cannot select a lower-quality version | Platform rendition availability | Check the platform’s current transcoding and account conditions; alternate renditions are not guaranteed identically across services. |
Copyright and channel policy are separate from encoding
A technically valid stream can still encounter copyright or platform-policy problems. Encoding settings do not grant rights to broadcast game audio, music, video, or other material. Confirm you have permission for the content you use and review the destination’s current live-stream and monetization rules before broadcasting. YouTube’s encoding guidance covers technical settings, not a blanket clearance for content.
