How to Connect an IP Camera to YouTube Live with RTMP

Connect a compatible IP camera to YouTube Live by entering YouTube’s stream URL and key in the camera’s outbound RTMP settings. Learn what to check first, how to match ingest settings, and when an encoder is needed.

If your IP camera supports outbound RTMP, you can send its live feed directly to YouTube: create or select a stream in YouTube Studio, copy the stream URL and key into the camera’s RTMP settings, then check the incoming preview in YouTube Live Control Room. If the camera only provides a viewable RTSP feed—or its firmware does not support publishing to an RTMP destination—you will need an encoder between the camera and YouTube. The exact steps and compatible formats depend on the camera model and firmware.

Check that the camera and channel are ready

Confirm YouTube live-stream eligibility

YouTube’s current eligibility guidance says a channel must be verified, must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the user must be at least 16. Check the current requirements for your channel in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility help before planning a broadcast.

Check for outbound RTMP on the exact camera

Look in the camera’s current manual or management interface for an RTMP feature that publishes to an external server. An IP camera being viewable over a network—or offering RTSP output—does not by itself mean it can send an outbound RTMP stream to YouTube. Features and menu paths vary by model and firmware. For example, Amcrest documents an RTMP setup for supported cameras, while TP-Link’s VIGI instructions note that the feature may require current firmware.

Check the network and the camera’s output

The camera needs internet access and must be able to reach YouTube’s ingest service. Review its main-stream video and audio settings against YouTube’s ingest guidance and the camera manufacturer’s instructions. Wired Ethernet or PoE can be useful if supported by your equipment and installation, but neither is a universal requirement for RTMP streaming.

Connect the camera to YouTube with RTMP

  1. Create or select a stream. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create a stream or select the one you intend to use. In the Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes the key as the credential an encoder uses to send the feed to the correct stream; see YouTube’s stream-key guidance.
  2. Open the camera’s RTMP configuration. Sign in to the camera’s web interface or management app, then find its network, streaming, or RTMP settings. The location and field names depend on the model. As examples—not universal instructions—Amcrest documents Setup > Network > RTMP, enabling RTMP and entering the URL and key in a custom address field; TP-Link VIGI documents separate server-address and stream-key fields. Follow the instructions for your exact camera rather than copying another brand’s menu path.
  3. Enter the YouTube destination and key. Paste the stream URL into the server or address field and the stream key into the key field. If the camera instead asks for a single custom RTMP address, use the format specified in that camera’s manual; do not assume fields or URL formatting are interchangeable across models.
  4. Apply the settings and start the camera’s stream. Enable or start RTMP publishing in the camera interface. Return to YouTube’s Live Control Room and wait for the incoming preview. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s encoder workflow says to click Go live after the preview appears. Check the image, audio and representative camera movement before relying on the stream.
  5. Keep the stream key private. Treat it as a credential: do not show it in screenshots or public examples. If you think it has been exposed, reset it in the Live Control Room and replace the stored key in the camera or encoder.

Match the camera’s stream to YouTube’s ingest settings

YouTube’s encoder settings guide lists RTMP and RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. Use it if both the camera and YouTube workflow support it.

  • Resolution, frame rate and codec: Choose a camera output that YouTube accepts and that the camera can actually encode. The guide’s bitrate recommendations vary with resolution, frame rate and codec, so consult the matching row for the camera’s actual output rather than treating one bitrate as universal.
  • Bitrate: Set a constant bitrate within the applicable YouTube recommendation and the camera’s capabilities. If the camera offers only presets, check what each preset produces before selecting one.
  • Keyframes: Use a two-second interval where configurable; do not exceed YouTube’s stated four-second maximum.
  • Audio: Check both that audio is enabled and that the camera’s audio format is supported by its own YouTube workflow. Camera-specific limits can be narrower than YouTube’s general ingest support.

For instance, TP-Link’s VIGI instructions recommend H.264/H.264+ for the main stream and describe an audio compatibility limitation in that camera workflow. That is a model-specific example, not a rule for every IP camera.

If the camera cannot publish directly

Use an intermediary encoder when the camera provides a usable feed but cannot publish it to YouTube itself. One documented approach uses a camera’s RTSP feed and FFmpeg to send a stream to YouTube; Hanwha Vision describes that workflow. In this arrangement, the camera supplies the source feed and the encoder sends it onward using YouTube’s stream URL and key. It is not direct camera-to-YouTube RTMP publishing, and the encoder must remain running while the broadcast is needed. Follow the camera and encoder documentation for the exact RTSP address, supported formats and command or settings; those details are not universal.

Troubleshoot a missing preview or unstable stream

  • YouTube shows no incoming feed: Confirm that RTMP publishing is enabled and running, that the URL and key were copied into the correct fields, and that the camera has internet access. If the key may be wrong or exposed, reset it in YouTube and update the camera or encoder.
  • The camera has no RTMP destination option: Check the exact model’s manual and firmware notes. RTSP viewing or an RTMP server feature does not establish that the camera can publish outbound RTMP; use an encoder if it exposes a compatible source feed.
  • The feed connects but YouTube reports an encoding issue: Compare the camera’s actual codec, frame rate, bitrate mode and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current encoder guide. Make sure the settings are supported by the camera as well as by YouTube.
  • Video works but audio does not: Check that the camera is configured to include audio and verify the audio-format limitations for that model and firmware. Manufacturer-specific compatibility can differ from YouTube’s broader ingest options.
  • The scheduled broadcast is not public yet: Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room, then use YouTube’s Go live control when the scheduled encoder workflow calls for it.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube; it does not take a live feed from an IP camera. If your goal is a 24/7 loop of recordings rather than a live camera view, the steps are: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo runs it from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
