Wowza Streaming Cloud is now called Wowza Video. If you are looking for the former product, current Wowza materials describe a cloud platform for live streaming and video on demand (VOD), with cloud transcoding and configurable playback. It is designed for organizations and developers sending video from an encoder or IP camera—not simply a desktop streaming app. This review is based on Wowza’s official documentation and product pages, not hands-on testing or independent performance measurements.
What happened to Wowza Streaming Cloud?
Wowza renamed Streaming Cloud to Wowza Video. The old name remains relevant when searching for setup guides and older references, but current product documentation uses “Wowza Video.” Wowza’s support page states: “Wowza Streaming Cloud is now Wowza Video.” (Wowza Support)
The name change does not make Wowza Video the same product as Wowza Streaming Engine. Video is the hosted cloud service discussed here; Streaming Engine is a separate product with its own pricing and deployment model.
What features does Wowza Video include?

How does a typical live-stream workflow work?
The documented starting point is a camera or encoder sending a feed to Wowza Video. Wowza’s getting-started tutorial demonstrates an RTMP source using OBS Studio. OBS is the encoder in that workflow; Wowza Video receives and processes its output. (Wowza getting-started guide)

- Prepare a source. Use a compatible camera or encoder. For the tutorial’s example, configure OBS Studio to send an RTMP stream.
- Connect the source to Wowza Video. Create or configure the live stream in the Wowza service and use the connection details it provides in the encoder.
- Choose a processing mode. Where supported by the subscription and broadcast location, select adaptive bitrate or passthrough.
- Configure playback. Set up the player and any relevant content or distribution options for the audience.
- Start and monitor the stream. When the event is over, stop the live stream in Wowza Video to avoid leaving a billable session running.
Adaptive bitrate or passthrough?

How does Wowza Streaming Cloud pricing work?
The public Wowza pricing page cited here lists prices for Wowza Streaming Engine, not Wowza Video cloud subscriptions. It shows a one-time purchase called “One Month of Streaming” for $295 and a “Basic Monthly” plan for $195 per month; the page describes server instances and transcoded channels. Those figures should not be treated as Wowza Video prices. The reviewed official sources do not establish a current Wowza Video subscription price, so confirm the cost and billing terms for the cloud product directly with Wowza. (Wowza pricing)

Watch for charges on an idle live stream
Wowza’s getting-started documentation says a started live stream can accrue transcoding charges even when it is not actively sending content. It also says idle streams are automatically stopped after 20 minutes and advises stopping a stream after the event. Treat this as a documented operational billing behavior, not an estimate of your total bill: actual cost depends on the applicable product, plan, and usage. (Wowza getting-started guide)
Who is Wowza Video a good fit for?
Wowza Video is worth evaluating if you need a hosted workflow that combines live video input, cloud processing, configurable playback, and VOD or related content tools. Its documented support for encoders and IP cameras also suits production setups that already have a source feed to send.

- Check carefully when: you need a confirmed price, specific plan entitlements, or support for a particular broadcast location or workflow. The reviewed public materials do not establish all of those details.
- It may be more than you need when: your sole goal is to keep a pre-recorded video looping as a continuous YouTube live stream. Wowza Video is documented as a broader hosted streaming platform; the sources reviewed do not establish it as a dedicated YouTube 24/7 looping service.
How to evaluate Wowza against the right alternative
Compare the product that matches your workload, not just the Wowza name. In particular, distinguish Wowza Video’s hosted cloud workflow from self-hosted Wowza Streaming Engine, then verify that any alternative supports your source, playback, processing, and operational requirements.
- Do you need live streaming only, or live plus VOD?
- Will your source be an encoder, an IP camera, or something else?
- Do you need adaptive bitrate renditions, or is passthrough sufficient?
- How much player customization, content management, advertising integration, analytics, or API access do you require?
- What are the correct product’s verified subscription charges and usage-related costs?
- How will you stop or monitor a stream so an idle session does not continue accruing charges?
