To set up live adaptive bitrate (ABR) streaming in Wowza Streaming Engine (WSE), enable the Transcoder for a live application, configure multiple output renditions in a template, align their keyframes, and group them for HTTP playback. For a single Engine instance, Wowza generally recommends a Transcoder-created Stream Name Group. The right codecs, rendition ladder, and grouping method depend on your source, target players, and deployment.
Before you begin
- Confirm your WSE version and that your installation is licensed to enable Transcoder. Wowza says Transcoder must be properly licensed; its current setup documentation does not establish a price or plan entitlement. See Wowza’s Transcoder setup guide.
- Create or select a live application that receives an incoming stream from your encoder.
- Decide which playback protocols and devices you need to support. ABR delivery in Wowza’s cited guidance uses HTTP-based playback.

Enable Transcoder for the live application
In WSE Manager, open the live application’s Transcoder settings and enable Transcoder. Select a fallback template, or configure template matching by incoming stream name if different streams need different settings. Wowza says changes to the match-by-name setting require saving and restarting the application.

Choose a template for the source
Choose a Transcode template when the incoming stream needs codec conversion. Choose Transrate when the input is supported H.264 video with AAC or MP3 audio and you want multiple bitrate outputs without using the broader Transcode path. Wowza also documents audio-only and H.265 templates; choose based on source codecs and playback targets, not the template label alone. See About Wowza Transcoder.

Set up the output renditions
In the selected template, each enabled encoding preset represents an output rendition. Enable and adjust presets to fit the source, expected viewer bandwidth, and target quality. Check that output stream names are unique, and configure video codec and audio bitrate as required by the template. Do not treat example preset values in the documentation as universal recommendations: the appropriate ladder depends on source resolution and frame rate, audience connections, player support, and server capacity.

Wowza documents support for several video and audio codec combinations in Transcoder, while Transrate has the narrower H.264-with-AAC-or-MP3 input path. H.264 is a sensible starting point when broad player compatibility matters, but verify the actual devices and protocol you intend to serve. Wowza notes that H.265 is not widely supported across playback protocols and players.

Group renditions for live playback
For supported live configurations, configure the template to create a Stream Name Group from its outputs. Wowza recommends Stream Name Groups for ABR playback from a single Engine instance because Transcoder creates them automatically. A template may include the source as a pass-through member; if it does, the StreamName produced for the encode must differ from the incoming stream name. See Wowza’s adaptive bitrate guide.

Align keyframes across renditions
Rendition keyframes must align so players can switch between streams correctly. When renditions are encoded separately, use the same keyframe interval and frame rate values across them. Wowza’s guidance states: “Before creating your SMIL file, you need to already have multiple bitrate renditions with aligned keyframes for players to correctly switch between them.”

Enable the playback type and test
Confirm the application has the HTTP playback type you intend to deliver enabled. Test with a player that supports that protocol. WSE Manager’s Video Test Players workflow can generate a URL and test playback. Wowza’s example URLs for a live group are:

Replace
[address],myApplication, andmyStream_allwith your server address, application name, and actual group name. These are URL patterns, not ready-to-use addresses.
Choose the right grouping method for live, VOD, and edge delivery

Do not use a live Stream Name Group as a substitute for the VOD SMIL workflow, and do not assume an origin-created group reaches every edge. Check the topology-specific instructions in Wowza’s ABR documentation.

Codec and encoding decisions
Start with the player and source
Choose a path that accepts your source codecs and produces codecs your intended players support. Wowza lists H.263, H.264, H.265, VP8, and VP9 video output, and AAC, MP3, Vorbis, and Opus audio output for Transcoder. The narrower Transrate path accepts H.264 video with AAC or MP3 audio and creates aligned outputs. These are documented capabilities, not a guarantee that every combination works with every protocol or player.
Treat HEVC as a specialized configuration
Wowza’s HEVC-over-HLS-with-CMAF procedure requires Transcoder and manual XML configuration; the documentation says the configuration is not fully available in Manager. Because player and protocol support is limited compared with broadly compatible choices, validate the complete playback chain before choosing H.265 for a general audience. Build a ladder for your deployment
- Source compatibility: check whether the input suits Transcode, Transrate, or pass-through.
- Player compatibility: verify codecs and protocol support on the devices that matter to your audience.
- Bandwidth coverage: select rendition rates that cover expected viewer connections without exceeding source or server capacity.
- Compute and latency: confirm the encoding approach can handle the workload and latency requirements. Hardware acceleration is an option, not a universal prerequisite.
- Topology: account for whether delivery comes from one Engine instance or uses origin and edge nodes.
Wowza’s cited setup documentation does not establish one universally correct bitrate ladder for every resolution, frame rate, audience, and player. Use test playback under your own operating conditions rather than copying sample preset values as standards.
Troubleshooting common ABR setup problems
