In Destiny 2, Suspend is crowd control, Unravel spreads Strand attacks between enemies, Sever reduces an enemy’s damage output, Woven Mail reduces incoming damage, Tangles are throwable or shootable Strand constructs, and Grapple is a movement ability with a damaging melee follow-up. Players asking “What do Suspend, Unravel, Sever, Woven Mail, Tangles, and Grapple do in Destiny 2?” are looking at distinct effects, not six versions of the same status: Bungie classifies Woven Mail as a buff, Suspend, Sever, and Unravel as debuffs, and Tangles and Threadlings as constructs.
What each Strand effect does
The practical difference is the job each effect performs: disable enemies, spread offense, reduce enemy damage, protect yourself, create an explosive object, or move through the battlefield.

How Suspend differs in PvE and PvP
In PvE, Suspend lifts an enemy off the ground and effectively disables it for a short time, giving you an opening to attack or reposition. Against other players, it is not a complete stun: a suspended Guardian is lifted but can still move slowly and shoot.

Duration is an especially poor value to treat as timeless. Bungie’s August 2023 Update 7.2.0.1 reduced base Suspend against non-Champion PvE combatants from 8 seconds to 5 seconds, or 7 seconds with Thread of Continuity. Against Champions, the same patch changed the base duration from 8 seconds to 3 seconds, or 4 seconds with Thread of Continuity. How Unravel spreads damage
Unravel is an offensive effect that can carry pressure from one target to another. Attack an unraveled enemy and Strand threads burst out to attack nearby targets; an enemy struck by those threads becomes unraveled too. That spread is what distinguishes Unravel from a simple damage-over-time label.

How Sever reduces enemy damage
Sever weakens the affected enemy’s ability to deal damage. Bungie’s description puts it this way: “A severed enemy is less capable of affecting the material world, reducing their damage output as a result.”
Bungie’s 2023 Update 7.2.0.1 increased Sever’s outgoing-damage reduction against PvE combatants from 30% to 40%. This records the change made by that patch; it does not establish 40% as the current value. The patch notes are at Bungie.net.

What Woven Mail protects
Woven Mail is a protective Strand buff that reduces incoming damage. Bungie’s launch-era explanation distinguished its PvP protection: it applied to body damage, while head and melee damage continued normally.
Its numerical tuning has changed in documented patches. Bungie reduced Woven Mail’s resistance against PvE combatants from 60% to 55% in August 2023, then from 55% to 45% in December 2023. In June 2024, Update 8.0.0.1 reduced the Woven Mail duration from Thread of Warding on Orb pickup from 10 seconds to 5 seconds. These are patch-change figures, not a statement of current live values. How Tangles work
A Tangle is a swirling bundle of Strand fibers left behind when an enemy affected by a Strand debuff is defeated. Shoot it to make it explode for area damage, or pick it up and throw it. It is a construct you can use in the fight, rather than a buff or debuff applied to a target.
Bungie’s August 2023 update reduced the Tangle creation cooldown from 15 seconds to 12 seconds. That is the historical change recorded in the patch, not a verified current cooldown. The same Update 7.2.0.1 notes document the change.

How Grapple and grapple melee work
Grapple uses the grenade input. Your Guardian weaves a hook and attaches to an anchor, then is pulled toward it. Strand can create a grapple point even where there is no solid surface. At the end of, or during, the grapple, a grapple melee can deal bonus damage, unravel an enemy, and knock it backward.
Grapple behavior has been tuned since launch. Bungie’s June 2024 Update 8.0.0.1 notes say a grapple melee could no longer be activated after firing a weapon, and repeated grapples extend a grapple Tangle’s duration by a limited amount instead of fully refreshing it. Consult the update notes for that dated change; it should not be mistaken for a complete statement of every current Grapple rule.
Why old Strand numbers need a date
Core descriptions explain what an effect is for, but patch notes show that its strength and duration can change. Bungie’s Guardian guide provides the effect categories without specifying numerical values, and updates after June 2026 do not, in the cited material, restate all six mechanics or verify every current value. Bungie announced on May 21, 2026 that the June 9 update would be Destiny 2’s final live-service content update and identified an all-class Strand Slicewire Grenade. A July 7, 2026 update also fixed an incorrect Crucible suspension-timer display; that correction alone does not confirm the duration of Suspend. For additional launch-era context on Strand and its movement abilities, Bungie’s Lightfall page introduces the subclass. Treat exact figures from older patch notes as dated changes unless a newer source confirms the live value.
