Is 720p Streaming Obsolete? What It Means for Video Quality in 2025

720p remains an HD option and can be enough for small screens or constrained connections. Find out when 1080p or 4K may help and what to check if playback stays at 720p.

No—720p streaming is not obsolete. Netflix still classifies 720p as HD, and YouTube defines HD as 720 to 1080 vertical lines. It remains a practical choice for smaller screens, limited or unstable connections, and metered data. Whether you can watch at 1080p or 4K depends on more than your screen: the service, title, plan, device, app or browser, and network all matter.

What 720p means—and whether it is still HD

720p describes a video image with 720 vertical lines of resolution. It has less detail than 1080p or 4K, but “less detail” does not mean unusable or obsolete. Netflix explicitly says its HD label can refer to either 720p or 1080p (Netflix’s video-quality guidance). YouTube says HD covers 720 to 1080 vertical lines (YouTube’s HD and 4K playback guidance).

Those definitions describe formats, not a promise that every title, account, or device will offer each resolution. Platforms do not all handle quality tiers identically, and the available evidence here directly establishes the details for Netflix and YouTube—not a universal rule for every streaming service.

When 720p is good enough

720p can look perfectly serviceable on a phone or other small display, particularly when viewed at a typical distance. A 2024 study by Mateo Cámara, César Díaz, Juan Casal, Jorge Ruano, and Narciso García involved 50 participants and four handheld devices. In those test conditions, it found no statistically significant perceived difference between 720p and 1080p (the study abstract). That finding is limited to the devices and sequences tested; it does not show that viewers cannot see a difference on a television, with other content, or in other viewing conditions.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

On a larger television, especially at a closer seating distance, more detail in 1080p or 4K may be noticeable. There is no single screen-size or distance threshold established by the sources cited here. Video source quality and compression matter too: a higher resolution label cannot restore detail missing from a low-quality or heavily compressed source.

  • 720p may suit you if you watch on a handheld screen, need playback to remain stable on a constrained connection, or want to limit data use.
  • 1080p may suit you if your screen and connection support it and you value the additional detail.
  • 4K may suit you if the title, plan, device chain, and connection all support it and you watch on a display where the added detail matters to you.

How much internet speed do 720p, 1080p, and 4K need?

Services publish different recommended connection speeds. Netflix recommends 3 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p, and 15 Mbps for 4K. YouTube recommends approximate sustained speeds of 2.5 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p, and 20 Mbps for 4K UHD. These are recommendations, not guaranteed playback bitrates or a promise of the resolution you will receive.

Resolution Netflix recommended connection speed YouTube approximate recommended sustained speed
720p 3 Mbps 2.5 Mbps
1080p 5 Mbps 5 Mbps
4K 15 Mbps 20 Mbps for 4K UHD

Netflix may lower quality when a connection is slow or unstable and may start playback at a lower resolution before increasing it. Its guidance also says higher-quality video uses more data and may use more energy. YouTube’s figures are sustained-speed recommendations; momentary speed tests do not establish that a connection will hold that speed reliably throughout playback. See Netflix’s recommended-speed page and YouTube’s system requirements.

Why a stream may stay at 720p

If a player offers only 720p—or keeps falling back to it—check the whole playback path before replacing your display or buying a new device.

  1. Check the title and plan. Not every title is available in HD or 4K, and the subscription plan can limit quality. Confirm that the particular title and plan offer the resolution you want.
  2. Check the device chain. The TV, connected player, app, browser, and any other part of the playback chain can affect the available options. YouTube says licensing agreements determine whether HD or UHD playback is available on a device, and some browser playback is not available in HD.
  3. Check the connection’s stability. A connection that fluctuates may cause adaptive playback to use a lower resolution. Compare the service’s recommendations with sustained performance where you actually watch, not just a brief speed test.
  4. Check account and data settings. Data-saving settings can affect playback quality. Netflix also identifies device capability, network conditions, and title availability as factors.
  5. Try the service’s app or a supported device. A browser or older device may not expose the same quality options as another compatible playback route.

A 4K-capable device cannot turn a 720p source into native 4K. YouTube lists Fire TV Stick 4K for Primetime Channels, but that specific compatibility listing does not establish support for every YouTube feature, title, or other service (YouTube’s device compatibility information).

Should you upgrade your internet, plan, or device?

  • Upgrade the connection only if it cannot sustain the speed and stability your chosen resolution needs during actual viewing. A higher headline speed alone cannot fix a title, plan, app, or device limitation.
  • Change the plan if the service restricts the resolution you want on your current subscription. Check the service’s current plan details rather than assuming every tier includes 1080p or 4K.
  • Change the device or app if the service confirms that your current playback route does not support the desired quality. Compatibility is service- and feature-specific.
  • Keep 720p if it looks good on your screen and meets your needs. Higher resolution consumes more data, and the benefit depends on the source and viewing conditions.
