What Is SRT Streaming? Benefits and How to Use It. SRT stands for Secure Reliable Transport: an open-source protocol that carries live audio and video between compatible endpoints over IP networks. Its key benefit is packet-loss recovery and adaptation to changing network conditions. SRT is a transport method, not a streaming destination or a complete platform; the sender and receiver must both support it.
How SRT streaming works
On a connection affected by jitter, packet loss, or fluctuating bandwidth, SRT can request missing packets again and use timing mechanisms to reconstruct the stream. Its primary loss-recovery method is Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ): when the receiver detects a missing packet, it asks the sender to retransmit it. The protocol also provides mechanisms for managing delivery latency and can encrypt media payloads.
Recovery takes time. The configured latency gives packets room to arrive or be retransmitted, so a tighter latency target leaves less recovery margin. The right setting depends on the network and workflow; no single value is correct for every link. SRT can help preserve continuity on an imperfect connection, but it cannot overcome inadequate bandwidth, severe congestion, or incompatible equipment.
Haivision’s documentation describes SRT as technology that optimizes streaming across unpredictable networks such as the internet. The SRT project README explains its recovery and encryption features. These are protocol capabilities, not a guarantee of a particular end-to-end delay or flawless delivery.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Where SRT fits in a video workflow
SRT is commonly used to move a contribution or distribution feed from one endpoint to another—for example, from an encoder or software application to a receiving service. The receiver may pass the feed onward or convert it to a format used by a downstream platform. A viewer-facing service must accept SRT input, or the workflow needs a compatible conversion step. Do not assume a consumer streaming platform accepts a direct SRT connection.
Both ends need compatible SRT support and connection settings. Depending on the implementation, setup may involve connection mode, address and port, latency, and matching encryption configuration. Exact controls and behavior vary by software or device. Haivision’s SRT Deployment Guide covers concepts, compatibility, deployment scenarios, configuration, and FAQs; for actual operation, follow the documentation for the specific sender and receiver.

Benefits and trade-offs
- Recovery over lossy links: ARQ can request missing packets, helping maintain continuity when the network drops some data. Retransmission needs time and available network capacity.
- Adaptation to changing conditions: SRT is designed to handle jitter and bandwidth fluctuations. It cannot create bandwidth or eliminate severe congestion.
- Configurable latency: The recovery window can be adjusted for the path and workflow. Reducing latency too far can leave insufficient time to recover packets.
- Payload encryption: The project describes AES encryption for media payloads. Confirm that the particular implementation supports encryption and that both endpoints are configured consistently.
- Flexible connection patterns: SRT supports rendezvous behavior and outbound connection patterns that may help with some firewall arrangements. Actual firewall policy and configuration still determine whether a connection works.
- Software or hardware implementation: The open-source project makes software implementation possible. Dedicated encoders, decoders, or gateways can suit managed broadcast setups, but they are optional rather than a protocol prerequisite.
How to use SRT
- Choose the sending and receiving endpoints. Select an SRT-capable software application, encoder, gateway, or receiving service. Confirm SRT support at both ends; if the final platform does not accept SRT, plan a compatible relay or conversion step.
- Check compatibility and the network path. Consult both products’ documentation for supported versions, connection modes, ports, and any network or firewall requirements. SRT support alone does not guarantee that unlike implementations will connect without matching configuration.
- Configure the connection details. Enter the required address, port, and connection mode at the sender and receiver. The exact fields and which endpoint initiates the connection depend on the implementation; use its product-specific instructions rather than assuming one universal UI.
- Set latency for the path. Choose a recovery window appropriate to the network’s delay and variability. A more difficult path may need more room for retransmissions; an overly tight setting can prevent recovery. Validate the choice on the actual route rather than treating a sample value as universal.
- Configure encryption if required. Enable it at the endpoints that support it and make their settings match. The protocol’s encryption capability does not mean every implementation has it enabled by default.
- Test the feed and monitor it. Check that the receiver gets continuous audio and video, and review its connection or packet statistics where available. If recovery is frequent or the feed stalls, investigate available bandwidth, congestion, latency settings, firewall behavior, and endpoint compatibility.
Software versus dedicated equipment
SRT does not require a purpose-built encoder: it can be implemented in software. A dedicated SRT-capable encoder, decoder, or video gateway may make sense in a fixed broadcast or contribution workflow where managed equipment is useful, but it adds hardware and procurement decisions. Haivision identifies those as equipment categories; the right choice depends on the endpoints and workflow, not on SRT itself. The official project repository includes sample tools such as srt-live-transmit, but its README warns that sample applications are instructional and should not be used in production.
Common connection problems
- The receiver never connects: Check that both endpoints support SRT and agree on connection mode, address, and port. Then check firewall and network policy; an outbound or rendezvous option can help in some setups but is not universally permitted.
- The picture freezes or packets are lost: Check available bandwidth and congestion on the route, then review packet-loss and recovery statistics. A longer latency window may allow more retransmission time, but it cannot fix a persistently inadequate network.
- Latency is higher than expected: SRT latency is configurable and recovery consumes time. Review the selected latency and the delay added elsewhere in the workflow; a protocol-level setting is not an end-to-end latency guarantee.
- Encrypted streams fail to play: Confirm that encryption is supported and enabled as intended at both endpoints, with matching configuration. Do not assume capability means encryption is active automatically.
- The receiving platform will not accept the feed: Verify its accepted input protocols. If it does not accept SRT, use a compatible receiving service or convert the signal to a format the platform supports.
How SRT relates to keeping a YouTube channel live
SRT moves a live feed between compatible endpoints; by itself, it does not loop uploaded videos or keep a channel live continuously. If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream from uploaded recordings rather than a contribution link, StreamNeo is a different kind of service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs the loop in the cloud, so your computer can be off. Each slot streams uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
