Live streaming terms describe different parts of a delivery chain: a source is encoded and sent to a platform, the platform may process and package it, and a player fetches it for viewers. The key distinction is that RTMP or SRT may be used to send a stream in, while HLS or DASH may deliver it to viewers. They are not interchangeable protocols.

How a live stream gets from a game to a viewer

A typical workflow begins with a camera, game capture, or other media source. An encoder prepares the audio and video and sends the resulting signal to a streaming service. The service may convert it into multiple quality options, package it for playback, and use a content delivery network (CDN) to serve viewers. A viewer’s player requests media and may switch quality when network conditions change.

This is an example, not a universal architecture. Google Cloud documents a workflow that accepts SRT or RTMP and produces HLS or DASH output; ITU-T describes encoding and upload followed by platform transcoding, multiplexing, and CDN delivery. Providers and configurations differ (Google Cloud Live Stream API overview; ITU-T Recommendation H.705.2).

Source and ingest: getting the stream to a platform

Source

The source is the original media being captured or played: for a gaming broadcast, that might be gameplay, a webcam, a microphone, or a mix of them. The source is not the same as the format viewers ultimately receive.

Encoding

Encoding prepares audio and video for transmission using a chosen codec and configuration. An encoder can be software or hardware. Its settings affect the signal sent to the service, but they do not alone determine every viewer’s final playback quality: a platform may process the incoming stream afterward.

Codec

A codec is the method used to compress and decompress audio or video. It is distinct from a container, a transport protocol, and a playback format. A service’s supported codecs and protocol inputs are separate compatibility questions; check the current documentation for the destination you use (Google Cloud Live Stream API overview).

Ingest

Ingest is the step of sending the source signal to a streaming platform or service for processing. In encoder settings, an ingest address and stream key tell the encoder where to send the stream and which broadcast to associate it with. Follow the destination platform’s instructions and keep the stream key private.

RTMP and SRT

RTMP and SRT are protocol names you may see as ingest options: they can carry a source stream from an encoder to a platform. Support depends on the destination. They should not be confused with HLS or DASH, which are commonly used for viewer playback in the documented Google Cloud workflow.

Processing and delivery: what happens after ingest

Transcoding

Transcoding converts an incoming encoded stream into other outputs, such as different codecs, formats, or quality levels. A platform may do this after ingest so viewers with different connections and devices have suitable playback options. It is separate from the encoder’s initial encoding step (Google Cloud Live Stream API overview; Cloudflare Stream documentation).

Packaging, segments, and manifests

For HTTP-based delivery, a service commonly packages media into segments and provides a manifest that describes the available media and playback options. The player reads that description and requests the relevant media. Exact segment handling and manifest details depend on the format and implementation; “packaging” is not another word for encoding.

HLS and DASH

HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) is Apple’s live and on-demand streaming technology. It uses web servers and CDNs and can adapt playback to network conditions (Apple HTTP Live Streaming).

DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) is a suite of MPEG standards for streaming multimedia over HTTP infrastructure, for both live and on-demand use. It is distinct from HLS, even though both can use HTTP delivery infrastructure (MPEG-DASH standards).

HLS and DASH are playback technologies, not simple alternatives to RTMP or SRT. The latter may carry a source to a service; HLS or DASH may carry packaged media from a service to a viewer. Whether a given platform uses or supports a particular option is provider-specific.

CDN

A content delivery network is distributed infrastructure that serves stream media to viewers. By using servers nearer to audiences and other delivery mechanisms, a CDN helps distribute content at scale. It is part of delivery, not the encoder, codec, or ingest protocol. MPEG describes DASH as using existing HTTP servers, CDNs, proxies, and caches (MPEG-DASH standards).

Playback quality: bitrate, renditions, and ABR

Bitrate

Bitrate is the rate at which encoded data is produced or delivered, commonly expressed in bits per second. Higher bitrate can carry more data, but it also requires more upload or download capacity; it is not a stand-alone guarantee of better-looking video. Recommended settings depend on codec, resolution, frame rate, and platform. YouTube publishes platform-specific encoder guidance rather than one bitrate that is right for every stream (YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

Rendition and bitrate ladder

A rendition is one prepared version of a stream at a particular quality level. A bitrate ladder is the set of quality levels made available for playback. For example, a platform might transcode one incoming stream into several renditions; the actual set depends on the provider and its configuration.

ABR (adaptive bitrate streaming)

With adaptive bitrate streaming, a player can switch among available renditions as conditions change. HLS supports adaptation to network conditions, and Cloudflare describes transcoding live streams into multiple quality levels for adaptive playback (Apple HTTP Live Streaming; Cloudflare Stream documentation).

ABR gives a player choices; it does not guarantee uninterrupted playback or a fixed resolution. If bandwidth falls, the player may choose a lower-quality rendition to keep playback moving. The options available depend on what the service has prepared and what the device and player support.

Buffering

Buffering is the player waiting for media it does not yet have ready to play. A pause can occur when delivery cannot keep up with playback, though the exact cause may involve the connection, service, device, or player. Adaptive playback may respond by changing rendition, but it cannot ensure there will be no pauses.

Latency: why viewers see the action late

Latency is the delay between an event happening and its presentation to a viewer. The path can include capture, encoding, upload, platform processing, packaging, delivery, and player buffering. A live stream therefore is not necessarily instantaneous.

The right latency depends on the use case. A conversation or interactive gaming event benefits from prompt delivery because viewers may be responding to what they see. A non-interactive broadcast can tolerate more delay. ITU-T distinguishes high-latency non-interactive streaming from lower-latency interactive scenarios, while the IETF notes that latency requirements vary by application. Neither source establishes one universal threshold for “low latency” (ITU-T Recommendation H.705.2; IETF RFC 9317).

Lower delay can involve trade-offs in buffering and delivery behavior. Check the service’s current latency modes and requirements instead of assuming a protocol name alone determines the delay.

Live versus VOD

VOD means video on demand: previously recorded media made available for playback when a viewer chooses. Live media is created and streamed while an event is in progress. A live broadcast may later be available as a recording, but that replay is VOD rather than the live event itself (IETF RFC 9317).

Quick guide: which term belongs to which stage?

Stage Terms What they describe
Source preparation Encoding, codec, bitrate Preparing compressed audio and video and setting the data rate.
Sending to a service Ingest, RTMP, SRT Carrying the encoder’s source signal to the platform.
Platform processing Transcoding Converting the incoming signal into other outputs or quality levels.
Playback packaging and delivery HLS, DASH, segments, manifest, CDN Describing and distributing media for players to request.
Viewer experience Rendition, bitrate ladder, ABR, buffering, latency Available quality choices, adaptation, pauses, and delay.
Recorded playback VOD Previously recorded content available on demand.

How to interpret streaming settings without mixing terms up

  • If a setting asks for a server or ingest URL and stream key, it concerns where the encoder sends the stream.
  • If a setting names a codec, it concerns how the audio or video is compressed, not how a viewer requests the stream.
  • If documentation mentions HLS or DASH, it is usually discussing playback delivery, though exact platform implementation varies.
  • If image quality changes during playback, the player may be switching among renditions through ABR; the service, connection, and device all affect the available result.
  • If chat or audience interaction feels delayed, look for latency-mode details from the streaming service rather than inferring delay from resolution or codec alone.
  • Check the chosen platform’s current guidance for supported inputs, codecs, bitrates, and latency modes. YouTube’s encoder settings are specific to YouTube and may change over time (YouTube live encoder settings).

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube channel that needs prerecorded videos to loop 24/7, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not from a camera. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
