Video Streaming Protocols Explained: Contribution vs. Delivery

Contribution transports a source feed to production or platform ingest; delivery distributes prepared streams to viewers. Learn where common protocols fit and what to evaluate.

Contribution carries a live video feed from its source to a production facility or platform ingest point; delivery carries prepared streams from an origin or content delivery network (CDN) to viewers. They are different jobs in a workflow, not mutually exclusive protocol categories: a service can accept one protocol and deliver another.

Contribution and delivery: the two legs of a live stream

A typical live workflow starts with a camera, production system, or encoder. Its feed travels over a contribution link to a production facility or a platform’s ingest service. The receiving system can process or package that feed, then send it onward for delivery to viewers.

Contribution is primarily about getting source video reliably to the next processing point. Delivery is about distributing a prepared stream to playback devices, often at scale and across changing network conditions. The stages can use different protocols, and gateways or platform systems can convert between them.

Which protocols are used at each stage?

Contribution: carrying the source feed

Examples used for contribution include RTMP, RTP, SRT, RIST, and Zixi. They represent a varied set of approaches rather than a single interchangeable standard. The practical choice depends on the source and receiver, network reliability, latency needs, interoperability, platform support, and operating requirements. The Streaming Video Technology Alliance (SVTA) discusses contribution protocols and their use in streaming workflows.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Delivery: distributing streams to viewers

HTTP-based HLS and MPEG-DASH are common adaptive streaming approaches for delivery. Adaptive streaming can provide versions suited to different playback conditions, but the protocol name alone does not tell you how a particular service packages, distributes, or plays its stream. MPEG-DASH supports both live and on-demand streaming over existing Internet infrastructure, according to MPEG’s standards overview.

Why protocol labels do not define the whole workflow

Some protocols appear at more than one stage, and a platform may accept multiple ingest formats. For example, YouTube Live documents RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH as supported ingest protocols. That list applies to YouTube Live; it should not be assumed to describe another platform’s requirements.

Vendor systems can also bridge stages. Zixi describes network-aware error correction for transport and supports output formats including HLS and MPEG-DASH. This is an example of a product spanning transport and delivery-format functions, not an independent comparative performance result. See Zixi’s product information for its own description.

How to choose for a real deployment

Start with the complete route from source to viewer, rather than choosing a protocol from a latency claim or popularity statistic in isolation. Check these factors against the actual encoder, receiver, platform, and audience:

  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
  • Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
  • Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Glass-to-glass latency: consider the full delay from capture to playback. Encoding, buffering, network paths, packaging, and player behavior all contribute; transport latency alone is not the viewer’s total delay.
  • Network resilience: assess packet-loss recovery and how well the setup tolerates the networks it will actually use, including unmanaged connections where relevant.
  • Compatibility: confirm support across the encoder, receiving system, platform ingest, and playback devices. Verify platform-specific requirements rather than inferring them from protocol names.
  • Scale and distribution: for delivery to many viewers, evaluate how the format works with the platform or CDN and its playback ecosystem.
  • Security: check the security requirements of each connection and confirm the chosen protocol and implementation meet them.
  • Operations and cost: include receiver or gateway requirements, configuration, monitoring, and ongoing operational complexity in the comparison.

There is no universal winner across these criteria. A protocol’s suitability depends on the workflow and the requirements at both ends; the available sources do not provide controlled, comparable performance benchmarks across all the options.

What SRT’s latency claims do—and do not—mean

Haivision describes SRT as a transport protocol for low-latency live audio and video and notes its use at contribution and distribution endpoints. “Low latency” is a design goal, not a guaranteed end-to-end delay: encoding, buffering, the network path, and playback remain part of the total. See Haivision’s SRT overview.

In its Broadcast Transformation Report 2024, Haivision reported that 58% of survey respondents used SRT for low-latency video transport. The report also cited RTMP at 56% and UDP at 45% in its discussion of contribution protocols. These are survey results for that report, not a census of the streaming industry or a 2026 market-share measurement. Read the 2024 report.

A practical way to map your stream

  1. Identify the source and destination: note what produces the feed and whether it first goes to a production facility, a cloud receiver, or directly to a platform ingest service.
  2. Mark the processing points: record where encoding, transcoding, packaging, or protocol conversion happens. Do not assume the ingest protocol is also the viewer delivery format.
  3. Verify each interface: check current documentation for the sender, receiver, platform, and playback devices. Record required protocol variants and configuration.
  4. Set measurable requirements: define acceptable end-to-end latency, resilience expectations, audience scale, security needs, and operational constraints.
  5. Validate the whole path: test capture-to-playback under representative network and device conditions. Measure viewer delay and reliability rather than relying on a protocol label.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube channel that needs uploaded videos to play continuously, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs the loop in the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Your video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts. Learn more at StreamNeo, then start your free day.
