Use CBR (constant bitrate) for a YouTube Live stream. YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies CBR; choose a bitrate from its recommended table for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then confirm your upload connection can sustain it with headroom. VBR guidance for uploading prerecorded files applies to a different workflow.
CBR or VBR for YouTube Live?
For a live broadcast, set your encoder to CBR. YouTube’s official live encoder settings specify CBR, along with supported ingest formats and keyframe guidance. The documentation does not publish a YouTube-specific performance comparison of CBR and VBR or explain in detail why it selected CBR, so there is no basis to promise a particular quality improvement from one mode over the other.
Encoder options vary. OBS notes that CBR is required by many streaming services for some hardware-encoding support, but that is general context—not evidence of YouTube’s specific rationale. OBS’s NVENC documentation also describes a “Variable Bitrate with Target Quality” option with a maximum bitrate; that description applies to that OBS/NVENC implementation, not every encoder’s VBR mode.
Why YouTube’s upload advice is different
YouTube’s separate video upload encoding recommendations recommend variable bitrate for prerecorded file uploads. That does not override the live encoder instructions: uploading a finished file and sending a live feed to YouTube are different workflows. Use the live guidance when configuring a live stream.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose the live bitrate for your format
YouTube’s live encoder table gives recommended ingestion bitrates that vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. These are platform recommendations, not results of a comparative quality test.
| Resolution and frame rate | AV1 / H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) at 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) at 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
Use the row for the format you actually send to YouTube. The service also lists minimum bitrates; a minimum is not the same as the recommended value shown above. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings if you need the minimum for a particular format or are configuring a different resolution, frame rate, or codec.

Set the other encoder parameters
- Ingest: YouTube’s live guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS.
- Video codec: The live guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1. Availability of a particular codec depends on your encoder and setup.
- Frame rate: The guidance covers up to 60 fps. Match your chosen resolution and frame rate to the bitrate row.
- Keyframes: Use the recommended 2-second frequency; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Rate control: Select CBR for live ingestion.
These are YouTube’s published live settings, not a guarantee that every encoder exposes identical labels or supports every listed codec. If your encoder cannot provide the format you planned, choose a format it supports and consult the corresponding YouTube bitrate recommendation.
Check upload bandwidth before going live
Your outbound connection must carry the stream’s total bitrate steadily. YouTube recommends leaving 20% room above that total and warns that a shared network can reduce the bandwidth available to the streaming computer. Check upload capacity—not download speed—and account for other concurrent network use. If you send a primary and backup stream, include both in the total before adding headroom. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for bitrate guidance and its bandwidth recommendations for network planning.

Test and monitor the stream
- Configure the intended format. Set CBR, select the codec, resolution, frame rate, and recommended bitrate, and use a 2-second keyframe interval.
- Check the real upload connection. Make sure available outbound bandwidth can sustain the total stream bitrate with YouTube’s recommended 20% room, including any backup feed.
- Run a test with representative content. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to what the actual stream will contain; a static screen alone may not reveal problems that occur during gameplay or other motion.
- Watch stream health during the event. Look for warnings or delivery problems and respond to the actual symptom rather than switching rate-control modes on assumption.
If the stream is unstable
A bitrate that exceeds stable upload capacity can contribute to delivery problems. OBS’s troubleshooting documentation says dropped frames can mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or the system cannot keep up with the set bitrate. Its listed troubleshooting advice includes lowering video bitrate. YouTube likewise advises testing and monitoring stream health.
- Dropped frames or unstable delivery: Check actual outbound capacity and competing network use. If the chosen bitrate is beyond what the connection can sustain, reduce it to a suitable supported format and test again.
- Problems appear only during movement or gameplay: Repeat the test with representative motion and audio, as YouTube recommends, then monitor health while that content is live.
- Considering VBR as a network fix: Do not assume switching from CBR to VBR will solve insufficient or unstable upload bandwidth. YouTube specifies CBR for live ingestion, and the cited guidance does not establish VBR as a workaround.
