How to Record and Stream Lectures on YouTube

Record a lecture for upload or teach live with a webcam or encoder. Here’s how to check access, test the stream, protect your archive, and handle rights.

To publish a lecture after class, record it on your computer or phone, then upload the saved video. To teach live, start a YouTube stream using a webcam for a simple camera lecture or an encoder for slides and external audio or video equipment. YouTube does not record webcam video on a computer for you, and its automatic stream archive should not be your only copy.

Choose between a saved lecture and a live broadcast

Workflow Best fit What you need
Record, then upload You want to edit, review, or publish the lecture after class. A computer recording app or a phone, plus the finished video file.
Live webcam stream You want to broadcast a straightforward camera lecture from a computer. A computer, webcam, microphone, and reliable internet connection.
Live encoder stream You need to share slides or use external audio/video devices, such as multiple cameras or microphones. Streaming software or standalone encoder hardware, and the sources you want to send.
Mobile live stream You want a portable, one-device setup. A compatible mobile device and a channel that meets mobile live-stream requirements.

YouTube describes mobile, webcam, and encoder methods for live streaming. A webcam is the simpler option for a camera-only lecture; an encoder is designed for screen sharing and more involved production setups. Neither method guarantees a particular production quality. See YouTube’s computer live-streaming tips and guide to creating a stream with an encoder.

Record a lecture and upload it

  1. Capture the lecture outside YouTube. Use recording software on your computer, or record on a phone. YouTube says its computer website does not have a webcam recording feature; its record and upload guidance covers capturing a video locally and uploading the finished file.
  2. Check the saved file before uploading. Play it back to confirm the picture, slides, and sound are usable, then edit if needed. Keep a separate copy if the recording matters to you.
  3. Upload the finished video to your channel. Follow YouTube’s upload flow and choose who can view it. Use private or unlisted visibility if you are limiting access; choose public only when you intend the lecture to be publicly available. The exact audience and access needs depend on your class and institution.
  4. Confirm the published result. Open the video as a viewer and check that playback works and the intended audience can reach it.

Prepare a live lecture before class

  1. Choose the live method. Use the webcam path for a simple camera stream. Choose an encoder if you need to share slides, connect external audio or video equipment, or combine multiple sources.
  2. Enable live streaming ahead of time. YouTube’s desktop guidance says the channel must be verified and have no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days; streamers must be at least 16. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until class day. Check your channel in YouTube Studio before announcing the event. See YouTube’s live-stream eligibility guidance and its encoder setup instructions.
  3. Check mobile-specific eligibility if using a phone. YouTube’s mobile live-stream guidance includes a minimum of 50 subscribers and additional device and channel requirements. These are mobile conditions, not the general desktop eligibility rules. Confirm current eligibility in YouTube’s live-streaming help before relying on a phone.
  4. Plan the stream settings in your encoder, if applicable. Add the YouTube stream key in the encoder’s stream settings, then select the video and audio sources you intend to use. Set output resolution and bitrate to suit your connection and production; YouTube’s streaming tips provide its current recommendations. Do not assume one bitrate or resolution suits every connection. The key is sensitive: do not share it publicly, and use the channel’s current key rather than one copied from an old setup.
  5. Measure available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends having 20% more upload bandwidth than the bitrate you plan to stream at. Treat this as headroom, not a guarantee: other people or devices using the same network can reduce the bandwidth available to your stream.
  6. Rehearse the complete setup. Test with the actual slides, microphone, camera, network, and streaming method. Check YouTube’s preview before going live, confirm the event can be opened from the intended channel or watch page, and test it on a phone as a viewer.
  7. Set visibility deliberately. YouTube provides public, private, and unlisted visibility options. Choose the one that fits your audience and use a suitable setting for a rehearsal so you do not unintentionally expose a test to viewers.
  8. Monitor the stream during class. Keep an eye on the picture and listen to the audio; check for a muted microphone, a missing slide source, or a connection problem rather than assuming a successful start means the entire lecture is fine.

YouTube identifies encoder software and hardware for more involved streams and maintains a verified encoder directory. Products in that directory are not made by YouTube.

Keep an archive you can rely on

YouTube can automatically archive live streams shorter than 12 hours, but it warns that longer streams may not be captured. If you need a dependable record, make a local recording or backup as well; do not treat the platform archive as the sole copy. Check YouTube’s archive guidance for current details.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check permissions before publishing or broadcasting

YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the content provider to have the necessary rights and follow applicable laws and Community Guidelines. Check permission for music, video clips, images, and other third-party material in slides or playback. Separately, confirm your school’s or institution’s rules for recording and broadcasting a class, including any required consent. YouTube’s terms do not settle local classroom or institutional requirements. Read the livestream terms and conditions before using material whose rights are unclear.

Optional equipment for clearer capture

A USB microphone is an optional way to capture lecture audio; external audio hardware can be used in an encoder workflow, but expensive equipment is not required to begin. A USB webcam may help if your computer lacks a suitable camera. A phone or camera tripod can steady an in-room mobile setup, but it is not a YouTube requirement. Choose gear for the room and workflow you actually have, and test it before class.
