A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11For the most straightforward setup, send OBS to a Wowza Streaming Engine live application over RTMP, enable Wowza’s Low-latency stream option for that application, and test playback using the viewer protocol you intend to deliver. If viewers need browser-based interactive playback, consider RTMP ingest with WebRTC delivery instead: it can reduce delay, but codec compatibility, transcoding, TLS, and signaling requirements matter. Neither route guarantees a fixed end-to-end delay.
Choose the viewer delivery path before configuring OBS
OBS is the encoder and publisher; Wowza receives the stream and delivers it to viewers. The viewer protocol determines which low-latency settings apply.
| Workflow | Best fit | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| OBS RTMP → Wowza → RTMP viewers | A direct RTMP workflow using a Wowza Streaming Engine live application. | Enable Wowza’s low-latency RTMP application setting and tune the playback buffer. A zero buffer can be less smooth. |
| OBS RTMP → Wowza → WebRTC viewers | Browser-oriented, low-delay playback while OBS continues publishing over RTMP. | Codec or profile conversion may be needed; transcoding adds startup time and latency. WebRTC also has TLS and signaling requirements. |
| OBS WebRTC/WHIP → provider | A WebRTC publishing route when the provider supports it and interactive delay is the priority. | OBS requires a provider URL and bearer token. Do not assume a particular Wowza account or endpoint supports the route without checking current provider documentation. |
Wowza’s RTMP-to-WebRTC guidance gives expected latency of one second or less for passthrough and two seconds or less for transcoded output. Those are workflow estimates, not guarantees across every encoder, network, player, or location. A separate Wowza Video real-time page describes approximately 500 ms with OBS Enhanced for Real-Time and approximately one second of additional delay with RTMP in that context; it identifies RTMP ingest as U.S.-based. These figures describe different product and route contexts, so do not treat them as directly interchangeable.
Set up OBS to publish to Wowza over RTMP
- Create or open a Wowza live application. Obtain its RTMP server/application address and stream name or key from your own Wowza setup. Wowza’s Docker Compose trial guide demonstrates the process, but its sample endpoint and key are examples, not credentials to reuse: Trial Wowza Streaming Engine with Docker Compose.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. Open Settings → Stream, choose Custom, and enter the Wowza RTMP server URL and the stream key/name supplied for the live application. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to publish to that application.
- Choose an output your computer and connection can sustain. Set the encoded resolution and frame rate for the intended delivery. OBS identifies Output (Scaled) Resolution as the encoded resolution and recommends matching Common FPS to the desired output. Sixty frames per second can tax a system more than 30 fps, so test the configuration under sustained load. OBS’s overview guide dates to 2021; interface details may differ by version: OBS Studio Overview Guide.
- Start the stream and confirm ingest. Click Start Streaming in OBS. In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, check the live application’s Incoming Streams view and verify that the stream is shown as Active. If it is not, check the application path, stream name/key, and server address before changing video quality.
Enable low-latency RTMP in Wowza
Wowza’s Low-latency stream option applies to RTMP-based clients; it is not the WebRTC configuration.

The XML alternative is to set Streams/StreamType to live-lowlatency in the application configuration and restart the engine. Follow Wowza’s current application-specific instructions: Set up low latency applications in Wowza Streaming Engine for RTMP streaming.
Playback buffering is a trade-off
Wowza says an RTMP player can use NetStream.setBufferTime() set to zero for the lowest possible latency, but playback may be less smooth. Its guidance suggests trying a small positive value such as 0.1 or 0.25 if zero causes instability. In the documented H.264-at-30-fps player context, Wowza says any positive buffer introduces at least 2–3 seconds of latency, with more at lower frame rates. Keep that caveat scoped to that player setup; it is not a rule for all playback technologies.

Use WebRTC playback when browser interactivity matters
You can keep OBS publishing to Wowza over RTMP and have Wowza deliver the live application through WebRTC. Configure WebRTC for the Wowza application, including its TLS and signaling requirements, and test using Wowza’s WebRTC playback path. Its setup instructions are here: Set up WebRTC streaming with Wowza Streaming Engine.
Check codecs before adding transcoding
WebRTC playback may require audio or video transcoding to make the incoming stream’s codec or profile compatible. Wowza’s passthrough video-only example uses H.264. For an RTMP source intended for WebRTC, Wowza recommends disabling B-frames where possible. Transcoding may solve compatibility, but it raises startup time and latency; use it only when the source cannot be played compatibly without conversion. See Wowza’s RTMP-to-WebRTC workflow guidance: Ingest an RTSP, SRT, or RTMP stream for WebRTC playback.

Consider direct WHIP publishing only with confirmed provider support
OBS describes WHIP as WebRTC publishing. Its guide applies to OBS version 32.1.0 and newer and requires a provider-supplied URL and bearer token. Confirm that the specific provider endpoint and account support the intended WHIP workflow before configuring it; a Wowza WebRTC playback setup does not by itself establish WHIP ingest support. See the OBS WHIP Streaming Guide.
Tune bitrate and quality from observed problems
Do not lower resolution or bitrate preemptively if the stream is stable. First check OBS’s dropped-frame indicator and logs. OBS says dropped frames usually indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Its 2024 troubleshooting guidance suggests around 75% of total upload speed as a starting bitrate, not a universal target. Lower the video bitrate or try another ingest server if dropped frames persist; change one setting at a time and observe the result. See OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.

- Test the actual sustained upload path to Wowza, not just a brief speed-test peak.
- Reduce bitrate if OBS continues dropping frames; reduce output resolution or frame rate if the encoder or machine cannot sustain the chosen settings.
- For WebRTC playback, check codec/profile compatibility and B-frame settings before deciding that network bitrate is the cause.
- Retest playback after changes. A stream can be active at Wowza while the viewer still experiences buffering, startup delay, or an incompatible playback path.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Wowza does not show an active incoming stream | Wrong server/application URL, stream name/key, or application configuration. | Compare OBS’s Custom server and key with the values for the selected Wowza live application; do not copy sample credentials from a guide. |
| OBS reports dropped frames | Unstable upload connection or bitrate beyond what the route can sustain. | Check OBS statistics/logs, lower video bitrate, and try another ingest server. Use OBS’s 75%-of-upload suggestion only as a starting point. |
| RTMP viewers have more delay than expected | Application low-latency mode may not be enabled or restarted; player buffering may be adding delay. | Confirm the Wowza application setting and restart, then test the player buffer. Reducing buffer can affect smoothness. |
| WebRTC playback fails or requires conversion | Incoming codec/profile or audio format may not be compatible with the WebRTC playback path. | Check the source format and Wowza WebRTC requirements. Disable B-frames where possible; transcode only when required, because it increases latency. |
| WHIP connection cannot be established | The endpoint may not support the required OBS publishing route, or the URL/token may be missing or incorrect. | Verify provider support, OBS version (the cited guide covers 32.1.0+), and the provider-issued URL and bearer token. |
