To put real-time captions on a live stream, generate captions and deliver them to the platform through a method it supports. For YouTube Live, that can mean enabling English automatic captions where available, sending captions from compatible software over HTTP, or embedding EIA-608/CEA-708 captions through your encoder. On Twitch, use a compatible caption plugin or encoder output. Test captions in the actual viewer player before going live.

Choose a caption method that fits your stream

Caption generation and caption delivery are separate jobs: speech recognition or a captioner produces text, but your platform still needs to receive it in a supported format. Decide based on destination, language, latency, encoder and codec, and whether captions need to appear on the replay.

Method Best fit Important trade-off
Platform automatic captions A supported YouTube Live stream in English when the feature is available Availability is conditional; recognition can make errors, and YouTube says these live captions do not remain on the archived stream.
External caption feed Events using a captioner or compatible caption software, including when language or replay needs call for a controlled workflow Requires compatible software and delivery settings. YouTube’s event workflow uses a signed URL and allows one caption feed per stream entry point.
Encoder-embedded captions Encoders and pipelines already configured to send 608/708 captions Confirm platform, encoder, and codec compatibility; YouTube documents embedded 608/708 with H.264, not HEVC.

Add captions to YouTube Live

Option 1: Turn on automatic live captions

YouTube’s Live caption requirements and Help guidance describe automatic live captions as English-only and available at normal latency, with availability rolling out to English channels; the cited Help guidance includes a channel-size rollout note for channels with more than 1,000 subscribers. Confirm the option is actually available in your account and for the stream before relying on it.

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the live stream’s settings and enable Closed captions.
  2. Choose Automatic captions and select English if that option is offered.
  3. Use normal latency; YouTube’s guidance says ultra-low latency does not support closed captions.
  4. Run a test and inspect the captions for missing words, names, timing, and coverage. Automatic recognition is not guaranteed to be accurate.

YouTube identifies mispronunciation, accents, dialects, background noise, poor audio, overlapping speakers, unsupported language, unrecognized speech, and long initial silence as possible causes of errors. Live automatic captions do not remain on the archived live video; YouTube may create separate automatic captions for the VOD, and those can differ from the live captions.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Option 2: Send captions from software over HTTP

For an event caption workflow, YouTube uses a signed Captions Ingestion URL so a captioner or compatible caption program can send captions to the stream. YouTube’s Live caption requirements page lists software including Total Eclipse/AccuCap, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net, with version requirements on the page. Check current compatibility and version details with the documentation and provider before the event.

  1. In the event setup, enable Closed captions and select the HTTP caption-ingestion workflow.
  2. Copy the event’s signed Captions Ingestion URL and give it only to the trusted captioner or compatible software operator.
  3. Configure the caption software to send its feed to that URL. Each stream entry point supports one caption feed.
  4. Keep the system clock accurate. YouTube recommends a 30-second or 60-second broadcast delay for events using this workflow; account for that delay when coordinating speakers, captioners, and viewers.

Option 3: Embed EIA-608/CEA-708 captions in the encoder

  1. In the event setup, enable Closed captions and select Embedded 608/708.
  2. Configure the encoder or caption system to send EIA-608/CEA-708 captions with the video.
  3. Check the codec: YouTube documents embedded 608/708 captions with H.264, but not HEVC. If your workflow uses HEVC, use a supported alternative such as separate HTTP POST caption requests rather than assuming embedded captions will work.
  4. Test the encoded stream in YouTube’s player and verify that the captions are synchronized and toggle as expected.

YouTube states that separate HTTP POST caption requests work for all HLS ingestions. Its HLS ingestion documentation describes the HLS requirements and caption behavior.

Add captions to Twitch

Twitch captions do not appear just because a caption generator is running: your setup must transmit captions in a format Twitch accepts. Twitch’s Guide to Closed Captions recommends the Closed Captioning OBS Plugin as one way to provide speech-to-text captions from OBS. It also documents embedded CEA-708/EIA-608 captions and RTMP onCaptionInfo/AMF0 transmission. Verify current compatibility in Twitch’s guide and your plugin or encoder documentation.

  1. Choose a caption source, such as the OBS plugin or an encoder that sends compatible embedded captions.
  2. Configure it to send the caption format supported by your Twitch workflow.
  3. Start a test stream and check the Twitch player. Viewers can toggle available captions with the player’s CC button.

Check language, latency, codec, and replay needs

  • Language: YouTube’s cited automatic live caption guidance is English-only. For other languages, select an external caption route and confirm that the caption provider and destination support the language.
  • Latency: YouTube says automatic live captions require normal latency and its API documentation says ultra-low latency does not support closed captions. Its event-ingestion guidance recommends a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay. Match the method to the latency your broadcast can tolerate.
  • Codec and transport: Embedded YouTube 608/708 captions are documented for H.264, not HEVC. Separate HTTP POST captions are documented for all HLS ingestions. Check the actual encoder output rather than relying on a preset name.
  • Replay: Confirm separately whether your selected workflow stores captions on the VOD. YouTube’s automatic live captions do not remain on its live archive; separate VOD captioning may differ.
  • Readable, accurate output: Check speaker changes, names, technical vocabulary, synchronization, and whether sound or overlapping voices compromise recognition.

For managed HLS or DASH pipelines, Google Cloud’s Live Stream API caption documentation describes WebVTT output and AI-generated captions, as well as embedded CEA-608/CEA-708 text streams. It notes that synchronous caption display reduces the viewing delay between audio and captions but increases overall end-to-end media latency. Most individual streamers do not need a cloud streaming API just to caption a broadcast.

Pre-stream caption checklist

  1. Identify the destination platform and whether your stream uses standard, low, or ultra-low latency.
  2. Choose automatic captions, external caption delivery, or encoder-embedded captions based on language and event requirements.
  3. Confirm the caption format, transport, codec, and encoder support before the event.
  4. For YouTube event ingestion, share the signed URL only with the trusted caption provider and remember that each entry point supports one feed.
  5. Keep the system clock accurate when using external YouTube caption software.
  6. Run a private or unlisted test. Check the actual viewer player for synchronization, legibility, and CC controls where relevant.
  7. Check the replay independently rather than assuming live captions will carry over.

Troubleshooting common caption problems

Captions are not visible in the player

  • Confirm the platform’s Closed captions setting is enabled for the event and that the selected method matches what the encoder or caption software sends.
  • For YouTube automatic captions, check account and stream eligibility, English language, and normal latency.
  • For an external YouTube feed, recheck the signed URL and confirm that the caption provider is sending to the correct stream entry point.
  • For Twitch, confirm the plugin or encoder is transmitting a supported format; a caption source by itself is not enough.

Embedded YouTube captions fail with the selected codec

Check whether the video uses HEVC. YouTube documents embedded 608/708 captions with H.264, not HEVC. For HLS, separate HTTP POST caption requests are documented as supported across HLS ingestions.

Captions are late or out of sync

Check the system clock used by external caption software, confirm the caption workflow’s timing settings, and test the complete path from caption source to platform player. For YouTube event caption ingestion, account for the recommended 30- or 60-second broadcast delay rather than treating it as a zero-delay workflow.

Automatic captions are wrong or incomplete

Improve the speech signal where possible, reduce competing audio, and check accents, names, overlapping speakers, long silences, and unsupported language as likely trouble spots. Use a captioner or compatible external workflow if the event needs more control, and review the actual viewer output before relying on it.

Captions disappear from the replay

YouTube says automatic live captions do not remain on the archived live video. Check the VOD separately and arrange an appropriate caption workflow if replay captions are required.
