RTP vs. RTSP: What’s the Difference?

RTP transports real-time media, while RTSP sets up and controls its delivery. Learn the key differences, how they work together, and what RTSP versions mean for compatibility.

RTP transports real-time audio and video; RTSP sets up and controls a media-delivery session. They do different jobs and can work together: RTSP can select RTP to carry the media, while its own messages handle session control.

RTP and RTSP at a glance

Question RTP RTSP
Main role Transports real-time media data. Sets up and controls delivery of real-time media.
What it does in a session Can carry the audio or video. Exchanges client-server requests and responses to establish session context and control delivery.
Typical operations Media transport; it does not provide RTSP-style playback controls. Session setup and playback controls such as SETUP, PLAY and PAUSE.
How they relate May be the delivery mechanism selected for an RTSP session. May control delivery that uses RTP.

These roles are defined in the IETF’s RFC 3550, RTP: A Transport Protocol for Real-Time Applications, and RFC 7826, Real-Time Streaming Protocol Version 2.0.

What RTP does

RTP is associated with transporting real-time media in applications such as audio and video delivery. Its job is the media transport, not the user-facing control of a playback session. Calling RTP a transport protocol describes its role; it does not mean that every implementation must use one particular underlying network transport.

What RTSP does

RTSP is an application-layer protocol for setting up and controlling delivery of real-time data. In its client-server request-and-response exchange, a client can establish session context and issue commands such as SETUP, PLAY and PAUSE. The server delivers the described media streams.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The standard describes RTSP as a “network remote control” for multimedia servers. That is a useful analogy for its control role, but it should not obscure the distinction: RTSP controls a session, while a separately selected mechanism can carry its media.

How RTP and RTSP work together

  1. Establish context: An RTSP client communicates with a server to set up a session and identify the media resources.
  2. Select delivery: RTSP can arrange a delivery mechanism; RTP is one possible mechanism.
  3. Control playback: The client uses RTSP operations such as PLAY or PAUSE to control delivery.
  4. Carry media: When RTP is selected, RTP carries the real-time media. The control exchange and the media-delivery mechanism are distinct.

So “RTSP streams the video” is imprecise unless qualified. RTSP controls the delivery session; RTP may carry the video.

Do RTSP messages use the same transport as the media?

Not necessarily. RTSP control-message transport must be distinguished from the selected media-delivery mechanism. RTSP 2.0 specifies that its messages use TCP or TLS over TCP. That does not mean the media itself is carried over that same connection or mechanism; RTSP can select a separate delivery method, including RTP.

It is also too broad to say that RTP always uses UDP. The cited standards define RTP’s media-transport role and RTSP’s control role, but do not support treating UDP as an unavoidable rule for every RTP deployment.

RTSP 1.0 and 2.0 compatibility

RFC 7826 defines RTSP 2.0, published in January 2017, and says it replaces RTSP 1.0. The standard states that RTSP 2.0 is not backwards compatible with RTSP 1.0 apart from basic version negotiation. As a result, the protocol version supported by both client and server matters when connecting them.

This describes the standards’ compatibility relationship, not how widely either version is implemented. The cited standards do not establish current deployment prevalence, so do not assume that a particular device or service supports RTSP 2.0 without checking its documentation.

Where StreamNeo fits—and where it does not

RTP and RTSP are protocol concepts; StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. It is not an RTP or RTSP client, and it does not stream from a camera. If your goal is a continuously looping YouTube stream rather than understanding or configuring these protocols, StreamNeo lets you upload a recording, add your YouTube stream key and go live.
