These are architectural patterns, not guarantees of a particular outcome. Claims such as “seamless,” “more scalable” or “better measurement” should be verified for the chosen player, ad stack and audience. AWS says SGAI can help with some SSAI scaling challenges, but that is not a universal cost or capacity advantage. The cited sources do not provide a neutral performance comparison across all three approaches.
How CSAI works
In client-side ad insertion, the player is central to the ad workflow: it requests or receives an ad response, plays the ad, then returns to the program. AWS contrasts this with SSAI by placing the SSAI ad call upstream of the CDN rather than in the client. [AWS for M&E]
This model gives a service room for player-specific ad behavior, but it also means integrating and maintaining ad logic across supported devices and player SDKs. Playback transitions are managed at the client, so device and player behavior matter to the viewer experience.

How SSAI works
In server-side ad insertion, a server-side video pipeline detects an ad opportunity, requests an ad and stitches selected ad media into the stream or a personalized manifest before delivery. AWS describes a common MediaTailor flow in which the service retrieves a content manifest, queries an ad decision service and returns a personalized manifest through a CDN. Because the player can receive content and ads as one playback presentation, it may avoid the explicit content-to-ad handoff typical of CSAI. That can reduce player complexity and visible transitions, but the insertion and decision services must operate reliably at the required scale. Stitched playback does not make measurement automatic: impression and quartile reporting still depend on the insertion service, manifest, player and measurement implementation. How SGAI works—and why implementations vary
Server-guided ad insertion keeps ad decisions server-side while giving the player instructions about when or how to retrieve or play ads. Google describes the player scheduling requests for pre-conditioned ads as a pod-serving manifest; an optional server-inserted marker can guide the application’s ad schedule. [Google for Developers]
Google’s April 7, 2025 announcement describes both client-side stitching, where the app proactively loads the ad break, and server-side stitching, where a packager or encoder places an ad marker pointing to the ad manifest in the content manifest. It also describes possible formats such as squeezebacks and L-banners; confirm support for the specific player and device rather than assuming this is a general SGAI capability. AWS MediaTailor provides another concrete variation: its SGAI mode references ads through separate playlists instead of stitching them directly into media playlists. Its player-select mode allows a player to choose stitched or guided delivery when starting a session; stitched-only mode requires SSAI. Google’s Ads Developer Blog summarized the model on April 7, 2025: “SGAI is an ad insertion method where an ad server instructs the video player on how to manage ad transitions dynamically within the content stream.” The practical meaning of that guidance depends on the vendor’s implementation.
Which approach should a streaming service choose?
Choose based on the service’s devices, player control, desired ad formats and operating model—not on the acronym alone. The cited sources describe architectures and vendor-stated trade-offs; they do not establish a provider-neutral winner for latency, fill, cost, scale or measurement accuracy.

- Device and player control: Can the service update its players across target devices, and can those players process timed metadata, ad markers and separate playlists?
- Ad formats: Are standard pre-roll, mid-roll and post-roll breaks enough, or are formats such as overlays required? Check support against the actual vendor, device and player.
- Playback continuity: Is a continuous stream or manifest important, or can the player manage a separate ad playback transition? - Scaling and cost placement: Compare the server-side insertion and decisioning load with client work and guided ad retrieval. Do not assume SGAI is inherently cheaper or scales better.
- Measurement: Specify how impression and progress events are triggered, where they are recorded and how publisher reporting is reconciled with ad-server reports.
- Operational ownership: Assign responsibility for ad markers, manifest generation, ad transcoding, CDN behavior, player integration and incident diagnosis.
What SSAI does—and does not—guarantee
SSAI is sometimes associated with ad-blocking mitigation. The IAB Digital Video Glossary (2018) defines SSAI in terms of stitching video content and ads at the server rather than the browser, and notes mitigation as a possible benefit.
