H.265 (HEVC) is usually the better choice when you need to deliver high-resolution or HDR video with less bitrate; H.264 (AVC) is often the safer choice when compatibility across older or unknown devices matters most. Neither codec guarantees better-looking video on its own. The result depends on the encoder, settings, source, platform, connection and playback device.

What are H.265 and H.264?

H.264, also called AVC, and H.265, also called HEVC, are video-compression standards. An encoder uses a codec to compress video for delivery; a compatible player decodes it for viewing. H.265 is generally more compression-efficient, while H.264 remains broadly deployed and is a common compatibility baseline.

For a live stream, the codec is only one part of the path: your encoder sends an input stream to a platform, which may transcode it into formats and quality levels for viewers. YouTube Live, for example, accepts H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and transcodes incoming live streams for playback. YouTube’s live encoder settings list support up to 60 fps.

H.265 vs. H.264: the practical differences

Decision H.265 / HEVC H.264 / AVC
Bitrate efficiency Typically achieves comparable perceived quality at a lower bitrate, or higher quality at a similar bitrate. The gain varies with encoder and content. Generally less compression-efficient, but widely supported.
Compatibility Support depends on device, software, profile, level, resolution and frame rate. Often the safer fallback for older or unknown playback devices.
HDR Required or preferred in the cited Apple and YouTube HDR workflows; check your destination’s current specifications. Not the HDR codec specified by those cited workflows.
Platform setup Supported by YouTube Live ingestion and Apple HLS under their respective constraints. Supported by both cited systems and remains a useful compatibility option.

Does H.265 use less bandwidth?

Usually, for similar perceived quality, H.265 can use less bitrate than H.264, which can reduce the bandwidth needed to send a stream. The amount is not fixed: content detail and motion, encoder implementation, settings and target quality all affect the result.

Published platform recommendations also illustrate the difference, but they are service-specific targets, not controlled tests proving equal visual quality:

Is H.265 better quality than H.264?

Not automatically. H.265’s greater efficiency can help preserve detail at a constrained bitrate or reduce the bitrate needed for a target quality, but the codec name alone does not determine what viewers see. Resolution, frame rate, bitrate, encoder settings, source material, platform transcoding and device decoding all matter. A well-configured H.264 stream can look better than a poorly configured H.265 stream.

Apple’s HLS authoring guide offers multiple bitrate variants and advises adapting them to content and workflow rather than treating its example values as fixed prescriptions. For a 1920×1080 variant at the same source frame rate, the guide lists H.264 examples at 6,000 or 7,800 kbps and HEVC examples at 4,500 or 5,800 kbps; its HDR HEVC column lists 5,400 or 7,000 kbps. These figures belong to Apple’s HLS examples, not a universal bitrate chart. Apple’s HLS Authoring Specification

Should you use H.264 or H.265 for live streaming?

Choose H.265 when efficiency or HDR is the priority

  • Your platform and encoder support the exact HEVC profile and level you plan to use.
  • Your viewers’ devices and software can decode it at your chosen resolution and frame rate.
  • You need to reduce bitrate pressure or target a high-resolution stream.
  • Your HDR workflow requires HEVC. YouTube Live lists H.265 for HDR, and Apple’s cited HDR guidance also specifies HEVC; verify the current requirements for your destination. YouTube Live settings · Apple Developer HDR guidance

Choose H.264 when compatibility is the priority

  • You cannot predict what devices your audience will use, or older playback devices are important.
  • Your streaming service, encoder or workflow has clearer H.264 support than HEVC support.
  • You prefer a broadly deployed baseline and can provide the bitrate your resolution and frame rate need.

Apple’s HLS guidance explicitly says that, for backward compatibility in that authoring context, some video content “SHOULD be encoded with H.264.” It also recommends keeping certain H.264 variants at or below High Profile Level 4.1 for maximum compatibility and avoiding a higher level than necessary. Those are Apple HLS recommendations, not a universal rule for every streaming service. Apple HLS authoring guidance

Check the platform and viewer devices before changing codecs

There is no single best codec setting for every stream. Check the destination’s ingest requirements, the encoder’s available profile and level options, and the devices your audience actually uses. Apple says HEVC support is available on newer Apple operating systems, while older-device support can depend on resolution and frame rate; it identifies 1080p or lower and 60 fps or lower as more broadly compatible with older devices. That is Apple-device guidance, not a guarantee for every device. Apple Support: Using HEIF or HEVC media

Container and delivery format can also matter. In Apple’s cited HLS authoring guide, H.264 may be carried in fragmented MP4 or MPEG transport stream, while HEVC uses fragmented MP4. Do not assume these container rules apply unchanged to another platform or ingest protocol. Apple HLS Authoring Specification

Settings that matter alongside the codec

  • Resolution and frame rate: Pick values your encoder, upload connection, platform and viewers can sustain. Raising either increases the amount of video data to encode and deliver.
  • Bitrate: Follow the destination’s current recommendation for the chosen resolution, frame rate and codec, then account for connection stability. Platform recommendations are not interchangeable across services.
  • Keyframe interval: YouTube Live recommends a two-second keyframe interval. Set it in the encoder when configuring YouTube ingestion. YouTube Live encoder settings
  • Profile and level: Use a profile and level supported by the platform and audience devices. Apple’s HLS guide recommends avoiding levels higher than necessary and includes compatibility guidance for H.264.
  • HDR: Confirm the destination’s codec and HDR requirements rather than inferring them from resolution alone. YouTube Live specifies H.265 for HDR.
  • Encoding ladder: Platforms may produce several viewer renditions from your input. Google notes that adding output ladder steps requires more computing power; that does not establish a universal compute difference between H.264 and H.265 encoders. Google Cloud Live Stream API guidance

What about gaming streams?

For a gaming stream, codec choice does not compensate for unstable upload bandwidth or an encoder overloaded by the game. Fast motion and detailed scenes can also make bitrate demands more noticeable. If your audience includes older devices or you are unsure what they support, H.264 is the conservative starting point. If your full workflow supports HEVC and you want to reduce bitrate pressure or deliver HDR, H.265 is worth considering. Check the platform’s ingest status and test playback on representative devices before switching a live channel.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream playing continuously, codec selection is only one part of the workflow. StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud: upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
