What Is RTMP? Real-Time Messaging Protocol Explained

RTMP is a protocol for sending timed audio, video, and data messages between peers. Here’s how it works, how it differs from HLS and WebRTC, and what it does not do.

RTMP stands for Real-Time Messaging Protocol. It is a protocol for exchanging timed audio, video, and data messages between communicating peers, commonly used to send a live stream from an encoder to an ingest server. RTMP is not a video codec, encoder, camera, or the complete system that delivers a stream to viewers.

What RTMP means in a live-streaming setup

Adobe’s 2012 specification describes RTMP as a bidirectional message-multiplexing protocol designed to carry timed audio, video, and data over a reliable stream transport such as TCP. In practical streaming workflows, the term usually refers to the connection carrying a stream from the sending software toward a server that accepts it. That contribution or ingest connection is only one part of a streaming service: the server and viewer-facing delivery system handle what happens next.

RTMP specifies how messages are exchanged; it does not dictate how video or audio is compressed. The media payload is interpreted according to its format and the application using it. A change to RTMP alone does not encode, compress, or improve the picture or sound. Adobe’s RTMP specification is useful for the protocol’s mechanics, though its 2012 date matters when consulting it as a technical reference.

How RTMP carries media

A client and server begin with a handshake. After that initial exchange, RTMP Chunk Stream breaks higher-level messages into chunks and multiplexes them over the connection. A message can include a timestamp, length, type identifier, and message-stream identifier, along with a payload such as compressed video, audio, or other data. Timing and stream information let the receiver interpret messages in context.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

This is a layered arrangement: RTMP handles message transport and organization, while codecs and media formats determine how the audio and video content is represented. The protocol does not itself guarantee a particular image quality, bitrate, latency, or playback experience.

RTMP, HLS, WebRTC, and SRT: different roles

These names are not interchangeable alternatives in every part of a streaming pipeline. Their roles, and the requirements of the sender, ingest server, and viewers, determine which one fits.

Protocol or format Role described by the cited sources What to consider
RTMP Bidirectional timed-media message multiplexing over a reliable stream transport such as TCP, as described in Adobe’s specification. Whether the encoder and ingest destination support it, and whether it suits the contribution workflow.
HLS Media delivery organized around playlists and segments. A master playlist can describe alternative encodings, as specified in RFC 8216. Playback and delivery requirements, adaptive variants, and segment-based packaging.
WebRTC An interactive real-time communications framework whose media transport uses RTP, with RTCP also required and used, as described in RFC 8825. Interactive communication needs, endpoint and signaling compatibility, and latency requirements.
SRT Listed alongside RTMP, RTMPS, and HLS as an OBS output option in an OBS Project discussion. In that discussion’s context, SRT is identified as closest to the low-latency needs being discussed. Whether both endpoints support it and what the specific service requires. The forum discussion is not a current support table for every OBS version or destination.

These are role-level distinctions, not a universal ranking. Choose according to the job—sending a contribution stream, packaging content for playback, or supporting interactive communication—and verify what the actual sender, server, and viewer clients accept. The cited material does not establish a current, service-by-service compatibility matrix.

Is RTMP still used?

RTMP has a history associated with Adobe and Flash, but it is not only a historical term. Michael Thornburgh’s 2024 RTMP Errata and Addenda reports continued use in media-streaming products and workflows. That is evidence of use as of that memo’s publication, not proof that every current platform or service accepts RTMP.

The memo also notes that Adobe’s December 2012 specification contains errors, omissions, and ambiguities that can impede interoperability. Treat the original specification as a description of protocol mechanics, not as a newly updated guide or a guarantee that independently implemented systems will behave identically.

What RTMP does not tell you

  • It is not a codec. Codecs define how audio or video is represented; RTMP carries messages whose payloads can contain media.
  • It is not an encoder or streaming device. Software or hardware creates and sends the media stream; RTMP describes a communication protocol used between peers.
  • It is not the whole viewer delivery path. An RTMP ingest connection does not, by itself, describe how a platform distributes playback to viewers.
  • It does not establish universal compatibility or performance. A service’s current accepted protocols and a stream’s latency depend on the actual implementation and use case.
  • RTMP and RTMPS should not be treated as identical labels. An OBS Project discussion lists both, but the sources cited here do not establish their technical security properties.

Keeping a pre-recorded YouTube stream running

RTMP can be part of a live-streaming workflow, but keeping a YouTube stream continuously live also requires a source and a system that continues sending it. If you are building that workflow yourself, you need to configure an encoder, connect it to the destination using the destination’s current ingest details, and ensure the source and sending system stay available. RTMP alone does not loop a recording or keep a computer running.
