HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) is a way to deliver live or prerecorded audio and video over HTTP. A player reads a playlist, chooses a stream variant, downloads media segments in order, and—during a live broadcast—checks for new segments as they become available. HLS can adapt playback to changing network conditions, but smooth delivery depends on correctly packaged media, compatible players, and reliable hosting or CDN delivery.
How HLS streaming works
HLS separates a media presentation into small segments and uses playlists to tell a player where those segments are. The encoder or packaging system creates the playlists and segments; HTTP servers or a content delivery network (CDN) serve them. HLS specifies how clients discover and retrieve media, not a guarantee of low delay, uninterrupted playback, or support for every codec and device.
- A server or packaging system creates media segments and one or more playlists.
- The player requests the multivariant playlist and selects an available rendition.
- It requests that rendition’s media playlist, then downloads the listed segments in sequence.
- If other renditions are available, the player may switch between them as bandwidth or playback conditions change.
- For a live stream, the player reloads the media playlist to find new segments. For protected content, it may also retrieve keys and decrypt media as required.
Apple describes HLS as designed for reliability and dynamic adaptation to network conditions, using ordinary web servers and CDNs. Adaptation is a capability, not a promise that every switch will be seamless.
Master and media playlists: what is the difference?
| Term | What it contains | What the player uses it for |
|---|---|---|
| Multivariant playlist (also called a master playlist) | References to alternate media playlists and information about available variants or tracks. | Acts as an entry point so the player can select a rendition. |
| Media playlist | A sequence of media segments for one selected stream. | Tells the player which segments to fetch and in what order. |
| Media segment | A consecutive piece of audio or video. | Provides the media the player assembles for presentation. |
Apple’s documentation uses “Multivariant Playlist”; RFC 8216 uses “Master Playlist.” Both names refer to the playlist that points to alternate media playlists.

How HLS handles live and on-demand video
Live streams
A live media playlist advances as the broadcast progresses. The player periodically reloads it, then requests newly listed segments. The playlist and delivery path need to keep pace with production so clients can continue receiving current media.
Video on demand
A video-on-demand (VOD) playlist describes a fixed asset rather than continually advancing live media. A completed presentation can signal that no more segments are forthcoming. Apple’s authoring guidance distinguishes playlist requirements for VOD and event streams; implementation details should be checked against the current platform requirements.

Adaptive bitrate and renditions
A multivariant playlist can offer alternate renditions at different bit rates, along with other tracks such as audio or captions. A player can choose among the listed options and change rendition when conditions shift. This works only when the alternatives are available, appropriately packaged, and consistent enough for the player to switch. HLS does not create alternate quality versions automatically; the production or packaging workflow must provide them.
What is Low-Latency HLS?
Low-Latency HLS (LL-HLS) extends HLS with mechanisms intended to reduce the wait between live production and playback while retaining HTTP-based delivery. Apple documents partial segments, playlist delta updates, blocking playlist reloads, preload hints, and rendition reports.

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Partial segments can be published before a complete parent segment is ready.
- Playlist delta updates can omit older playlist material that a client already has.
- Blocking playlist reload allows a request to wait for a playlist update.
- Preload hints help a player request an upcoming resource.
- Rendition reports help a player move between renditions.
These features require compatible production tools and server or CDN behavior. Apple notes that a player can fall back to regular-latency HLS if the server does not support the required low-latency configuration. Apple’s authoring guidance recommends a one-second part target, with the chosen target tied to expected client-to-server round-trip time; that is not a guarantee of a particular end-to-end delay. LL-HLS is not enabled by adding a single playlist tag.
Segments, formats, and playback compatibility
Apple’s authoring guidance covers MPEG-2 transport stream and fragmented MP4 media. Which formats, codecs, encryption methods, and HLS features work depends on the target player and device. A valid playlist alone cannot ensure compatibility: the player must support the media and any features used, and the playlists and segments must be served correctly.

Security and content protection
HLS playlists can reference encryption keys. A protected playback flow may require a client to authenticate, retrieve a key, and decrypt media. For protected delivery to Apple devices, Apple’s authoring specification describes FairPlay Streaming requirements and related encryption constraints. Secure deployment also depends on authorization, TLS, key handling, and client support; the presence of a playlist does not by itself mean the content is adequately protected.

When playback fails or behaves inconsistently, check the whole path—from packaging through delivery to the player—rather than assuming the playlist alone is at fault.

Or let it run in the cloud
HLS is the protocol behind many streaming workflows, but it is not a service for keeping a YouTube channel live. If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera.
- Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
- Each slot streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required, one free day per account.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
