How Churches Can Use Video to Increase Donations

A practical guide to church fundraising videos: tell a specific story, make giving easy, check YouTube eligibility, and measure gifts separately from views.

Churches can use video to explain a specific ministry need, show why it matters, and give viewers a clear route to contribute. A video is a communication tool, not a guarantee of increased donations: measure views, donation-page visits, and completed gifts separately, and avoid claiming that every gift during a campaign came from the video.

How can churches use video to increase donations?

Build the video around one concrete need, project, or outcome. Explain who or what it serves, why it matters to the congregation or community, and what a contribution will support. Then make one direct invitation and place the giving route close to the video.

Keep the appeal specific and truthful. Do not promise an outcome the church cannot substantiate or use emotional pressure as a substitute for clear information. YouTube warns against false donation claims and fake engagement; its guidance also cautions against using other people’s work without sufficient changes. See YouTube’s fundraising guidance.

Use a simple story structure

  1. Need: Name the ministry need or project in plain language.
  2. Impact: Explain what the work does and why it matters. Use details the church can verify.
  3. Invitation: Say exactly what viewers can do and where they can give.

Ask a willing church leader, volunteer, or participant to speak naturally. A polished production is not a prerequisite for a clear appeal. Obtain church-approved permission before recording people, particularly minors or people receiving services, and follow the church’s safeguarding and privacy practices. Legal requirements vary by jurisdiction; consult the church’s safeguarding or legal guidance rather than assuming one release rule applies everywhere.

How do I make a church fundraising video?

Plan the format and destination first

Decide where viewers will encounter the video—such as a social post, the church website, or a service presentation—and choose a horizontal or vertical framing that suits that placement. Consider a short version for sharing and a version suited to the website or service. Before filming, verify the donation page or fundraising feature you intend to use so the call to action can name the actual next step.

Record clear, steady footage

A smartphone can be enough to begin. YouTube’s nonprofit production guide recommends keeping the phone stable, cleaning its lens, avoiding interruptions, considering the opening seconds, and paying attention to light and framing. For spoken appeals, intelligible audio matters: record close enough to the microphone, and consider a smartphone-compatible lavalier microphone if the built-in mic does not capture speech clearly. The guide presents this as production advice, not as a requirement or a promise of more donations. Read YouTube’s nonprofit video guide.

  • Check a short test recording for sound, focus, and lighting before making the full video.
  • Use captions or on-screen text where practical so the central message and donation destination remain understandable without audio.

Make the giving instruction unmistakable

State the action aloud and, where useful, show it on screen: for example, direct viewers to the church’s approved giving page or explain how to use an available Donate button. Put the link near the video—in its description, post, or page—and make sure the destination is legitimate, the campaign purpose is clear, and the available giving methods work for the congregation.

Can churches fundraise on YouTube?

Sometimes. YouTube says eligible channels in certain locations can fundraise for available nonprofits with a Donate button on videos and live streams. Eligibility, location, and the nonprofits available through the feature matter, so check the current requirements for the church’s own account before building a campaign around an in-platform button. Google for Nonprofits describes YouTube Giving fundraisers as requiring a U.S.-registered 501(c)(3) public charity and a Google for Nonprofits account. It also describes “Link anywhere cards” for participating nonprofit channels to direct viewers to external campaign landing pages. Treat these as program requirements and options to verify against the church’s status, location, and current platform guidance; they do not establish that every church or channel can use them. See Google for Nonprofits’ YouTube information.

If the channel cannot use YouTube Giving

YouTube advises channels that are not eligible for YouTube Giving to use an end screen linking to an external fundraiser. End screens can appear in the last 5–20 seconds of a video. Make the destination easy to identify, and check the link and page before publishing. If using an external giving page, confirm that it clearly identifies the church and the purpose of the campaign.

How should a church measure whether the video helped?

Track the steps separately rather than treating views as donations:

  • Exposure: Record the video’s views or reach using the platform’s available reporting.
  • Interest: Track visits to the linked donation page, using a campaign-specific or otherwise trackable link where practical.
  • Outcome: Count completed gifts through the church’s giving records or platform reporting.

Compare those figures with a relevant baseline, and avoid attributing every donation made during the campaign to the video unless the measurement method supports that conclusion. The sources available do not establish a reliable percentage increase in church donations caused by video, or a validated church-video conversion benchmark.

Video should also fit the congregation’s broader giving practices. Givelify’s 2026 Giving in Faith report page describes both traditional and digital giving. Its 2026 report summary says recurring-giving tools are most useful for people with established giving habits; present recurring giving as an option, not as the right choice for every viewer. Givelify’s research base includes 894 church leaders surveyed, 1,987 faith-based donors surveyed, $7.2 billion in donations analyzed, and 1.7 million donor giving patterns represented. Those figures describe that report’s research base, not an independent census of churches.

What video can—and cannot—promise

YouTube presents video as a way for nonprofits to tell their stories and make it easier for supporters to give, but that platform guidance is not a controlled estimate of church donation impact. A 2021 Tectonic Video index analyzed 112,000+ social media video posts from 778 nonprofit organizations, comparing 2020 with 2019. It describes pandemic-era changes in nonprofit video and fundraising use; it is not a current church-only benchmark and does not establish that video caused donations. The index reports that production value did not correlate with audience engagement, which is not evidence about donation conversion. See Tectonic Video’s nonprofit video index.

The Church of England says its 2025 Anglican Giving Survey used an online panel of 2,000 self-identified Anglicans who attend at least monthly. That is denominationally specific giving context, not evidence that video increases donations.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the church also wants an uploaded video to play as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the video or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. The computer and home internet connection do not need to stay on, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card; it is one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. This is a separate way to keep uploaded video running, not a substitute for planning a clear donation appeal or checking YouTube fundraising eligibility. Start a StreamNeo free day.
