There is no single minimum PC specification that guarantees a smooth live stream. The right setup depends on what you stream, the resolution and frame rate you choose, how OBS encodes the video, and whether your internet connection can sustain the required upload bitrate. For gaming, your PC must also render the game and leave enough capacity for OBS.
What PC specs do you need to live stream?
Think of “minimum” as two separate questions: can your PC run streaming software, and can it handle your specific game and stream settings without stutters or dropped frames? OBS notes that software compatibility alone does not guarantee the system can stream or record a particular workload. CPU demand varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS’s system requirements page was dated August 25, 2021, so verify current compatibility and drivers for your hardware and software version.
A static presentation or lightly loaded game is a different workload from a demanding game at high frame rates with animated browser overlays. The available official guidance does not establish one universal CPU model, core count, RAM amount, or graphics-card tier for gaming and streaming. Assess the game and stream target together rather than buying to a generic “minimum streaming PC” list.
Is a CPU or GPU more important for streaming?
It depends on the encoding path and what else the PC is doing. OBS offers x264 software encoding and supports hardware encoding options including NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync, with compatibility dependent on hardware generation, platform, and drivers. Hardware encoding shifts encoding work to specialized components and is generally recommended by OBS for performance; x264 uses the CPU. Encoder generations do not necessarily produce identical image quality at the same bitrate.

Using a hardware encoder does not make the graphics card irrelevant. OBS still needs GPU resources to composite and render scenes, and the game needs GPU capacity to draw frames. If a game consumes nearly all available GPU resources, OBS may miss render deadlines even when encoding is handled by hardware. Reduce graphics settings or close other GPU-heavy applications if the GPU is overloaded. See OBS’s encoding-performance guidance and encoder support notes for current hardware-specific details.
Choose an encoder for your system
- Hardware encoding: A sensible first option when your hardware supports it and you want to reduce CPU encoding load. Check the encoder generation and your drivers; availability alone does not establish output quality.
- x264: Encodes on the CPU. It can be appropriate when it performs well for your workload, but running it alongside a demanding game may increase CPU pressure.
- Apple systems: OBS documents hardware streaming with H.264 on Apple Silicon. Its system guidance says Intel Mac VideoToolbox streaming is not supported because of constant-bitrate limitations, making x264 the streaming option in that case. Check the current OBS guidance before configuring an older Mac.
Can your PC handle streaming and gaming at the same time?
Only a test of the actual game, scene, and settings can answer that reliably. Stream load depends not just on the encoder but also on resolution, FPS, overlays, browser sources, and how much GPU capacity the game is already using. OBS notes that 60-fps streaming can be taxing compared with 30 fps. Higher frame rates and resolutions also raise the stream’s bitrate needs.

Use this comparison to choose a starting target, then test it in the game you intend to stream:
| Choice | Trade-off | When it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 30 fps vs. 60 fps | 30 fps generally lowers workload and bitrate needs; 60 fps gives smoother motion but increases demands. | Fast gameplay may benefit from 60 fps, but confirm your PC and connection can sustain it. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers supported settings. |
| 720p vs. 1080p or higher | Lower resolution reduces detail but needs less bitrate; higher resolution preserves more detail and needs more capacity. | Choose according to the content, platform guidance, and sustained upload—not a speed-test peak alone. |
| Wi-Fi vs. wired Ethernet | Wi-Fi is convenient; a wired connection can help when wireless instability causes dropped frames. | Try Ethernet when connection trouble persists. OBS’s dropped-frames guide suggests a wired connection when Wi-Fi is unstable. |
How much upload speed do you need for 1080p streaming?
Upload capacity is separate from PC performance. YouTube recommends a speed test and publishes ingest bitrate ranges by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For 1080p60, YouTube lists H.264 at 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended; for H.265 or AV1, it lists 4 Mbps minimum and 12 Mbps recommended. For 1080p30, the corresponding figures are 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for H.264, and 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended for H.265 or AV1. These are YouTube encoder bitrate recommendations, not guaranteed ISP upload-speed thresholds for every household.

YouTube’s live encoder settings page lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS for an encrypted connection to YouTube. Follow the current platform guidance for your chosen codec and format; don’t assume that a short speed-test peak means your connection can sustain a stream.
How to check whether your PC is ready
- Set the target workload. Decide which game or content, resolution, frame rate, scenes, and encoder you plan to use. A test that omits the game or overlays you will actually run may not reveal the bottleneck.
- Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard. In OBS, open Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard and use the result as a starting point, not a guarantee of performance.
- Match OBS output to platform guidance. In Settings > Output, select an encoder supported by your system and set a bitrate suited to your codec, resolution, frame rate, and sustained connection. In Settings > Video, choose the canvas and output resolution and FPS you intend to stream. For YouTube, observe its current bitrate and keyframe guidance.
- Run a test stream under real conditions. Include gameplay, movement, audio, scenes, and sources such as browser overlays. Check OBS statistics and YouTube stream health for rendering or encoding problems and network-dropped frames.
- Change one likely bottleneck at a time. Reduce game graphics or other GPU work if OBS cannot render scenes on time. Lower output resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the PC or connection cannot sustain your target, then test again.
How to tell whether the problem is the PC or the connection
“Dropped frames” often point to connection instability or an inability to sustain the configured bitrate; rendering or encoding lag points toward PC workload. Identify the symptom before replacing hardware. OBS’s network troubleshooting guidance suggests starting at about 75% of total upload speed for stream bitrate. That is OBS troubleshooting advice, not a platform standard or guarantee. If Wi-Fi is unstable, try Ethernet; if the connection cannot sustain the target, lower the bitrate and test again.

For GPU-related rendering trouble, lower the game’s graphics settings or close GPU-intensive applications to free resources for OBS. If the problem appears tied to encoding load, try a supported hardware encoder or a lower-demand stream target, then repeat the same test conditions. OBS’s performance troubleshooting page explains the distinction and suggested remedies.

- The game runs well, but the stream stutters: The game may be using too much GPU capacity for OBS to render scenes. Lower graphics settings or close GPU-heavy applications, then test again.
- OBS reports network-dropped frames: Check whether upload is stable at the configured bitrate. Try a wired connection if Wi-Fi is unstable, or reduce bitrate and retest.
- The stream becomes unreliable at 60 fps or higher resolution: The system or connection may not sustain that workload. Test 30 fps or a lower resolution, and compare results before upgrading.
- Hardware encoding is unavailable or behaves unexpectedly: Support depends on the hardware generation, operating system, and drivers. Confirm the encoder is supported for your specific system in current OBS guidance.
- A capture card is missing from the setup list: It is not a universal streaming-PC requirement. It is relevant when you need to bring an external video source into OBS; check OBS’s capture-card guide.
Should you upgrade your PC?
Upgrade only after a test identifies a hardware bottleneck. If rendering or encoding performance is the issue, adjust the game load, OBS sources, encoder, resolution, or frame rate first. A hardware encoder may reduce CPU load, but it does not eliminate the GPU’s scene-rendering work. If network-dropped frames are the issue, a faster or more stable upload connection may matter more than a new graphics card. There is no universal hardware shopping list established for every game and stream target.
