Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo stream your computer screen on YouTube Live, use encoder software that captures your display, then connect it to YouTube Studio with the stream URL and stream key. Start the encoder, check its preview in Live Control Room, and click Go live. You can stream a lesson, game, or tutorial without a webcam; a microphone is optional for narration.
Before you set up the stream
- Your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s stated minimum age for livestreaming is 16. Check your current eligibility in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Choose a computer encoder that can capture your screen and route the audio you want viewers to hear. YouTube lists verified encoder options, but says those products are not made by YouTube; the list is not a comparative ranking. YouTube’s encoder options.
- Check that your internet connection has enough upload capacity for the encoder’s total stream bitrate. YouTube recommends keeping about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Choose software and equipment for your stream
Screen demonstration, lesson, or gameplay
Use encoder software with display capture and the audio routing you need. For a game stream, capture the game and decide whether to include game audio, a microphone, or both. For a lesson or demonstration, capture the relevant display or application and check that notifications or private information will not appear in the broadcast.
Narrated tutorial
A separate microphone is optional, but can make speech clearer. Test it alongside system or application audio so that one source does not drown out the other.
Face-camera overlay or multiple inputs
A webcam and other audio or video hardware can be connected through an encoder. More involved productions may use multiple cameras and microphones; confirm that the software supports the inputs and layout you intend to use.

Professional event
A dedicated hardware encoder may suit a production built around broadcast equipment. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events. YouTube’s live production guidance.
When comparing encoder options, check operating-system and hardware compatibility, screen and audio capture, ease of connecting to YouTube and monitoring stream health, production tools such as overlays or multiple inputs, and total cost. The official YouTube pages provide options and setup guidance, not a performance or price comparison of specific applications.

Set up and start a screen stream
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Create a stream or open one you already manage. YouTube’s Live Control Room setup steps.
- Configure the encoder. If it offers a YouTube preset, select it. Otherwise, copy the server or stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into the corresponding encoder fields. Treat the stream key like a password: do not reveal it in a screen capture, overlay, or broadcast.
- Set up the screen and audio sources. Choose the display or application to capture. Add a microphone or webcam only if your format needs one, and confirm the encoder is receiving the intended audio sources.
- Choose a stream quality your connection can sustain. Match resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to your available upload capacity. The total stream bitrate must fit within that capacity; leave roughly 20% headroom as YouTube recommends. There is no single bitrate that suits every connection. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
- Test before broadcasting. Run an upload-speed test, then test with representative screen activity, movement, and audio. Check the encoder’s outgoing status and YouTube’s incoming preview and stream-health indicators. A static desktop is not a reliable test for a fast-moving game or a presentation with video and sound.
- Go live. Start the encoder’s outgoing stream. Wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room, check for stream-health messages, then click Go live. YouTube’s Live Control Room instructions.
- End the broadcast cleanly. When finished, click End Stream in Live Control Room and stop the encoder’s outgoing stream.
Keep the stream stable while live
- Keep upload headroom available. Other people or devices using the same connection can reduce the bandwidth available to your stream.
- Watch Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health messages. If the connection struggles, reduce the encoder’s bitrate or choose a less demanding resolution or frame rate, then check the incoming status again.
- Use the same microphone, application audio, and type of screen activity in your preflight test that you expect during the broadcast.
- Protect the stream key. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder before the next broadcast.
Fix common setup problems
No preview appears in Live Control Room
Check that the encoder is sending, and that the server or stream URL and stream key match the stream selected in YouTube Studio. Confirm the encoder is not showing an output or connection error, then allow time for the incoming preview to appear.
The stream looks unstable or YouTube reports poor health
Compare the encoder’s total bitrate with your actual upload capacity, including bandwidth used by other devices. Restore upload headroom by reducing other network use or lowering the stream bitrate, resolution, or frame rate. Retest before continuing.

Private information appears in the capture
Stop or pause the broadcast while you correct the capture. Close sensitive windows, hide notifications, and select the intended display or application before resuming.
