To improve YouTube Live quality, first match your encoder’s resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate to what your internet connection can sustain. Test with representative video and audio, check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and health messages, then trace problems from the source to the encoder and finally the network. A higher bitrate alone will not fix an unstable upload connection.
Start with upload speed and a stable feed
For a live stream, the important speed-test result is upload, not download. Measure outbound throughput under conditions like those expected during your stream. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% of available upload capacity unused, and counting both primary and backup feeds when you use them. Other people or devices sharing the connection can reduce the capacity available to your encoder. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Keep the combined stream bitrate below the upload capacity you can sustain, with that headroom intact. If the connection varies, choose a lower bitrate or video mode rather than aiming for a setting the connection can only reach intermittently. A speed test that shows a strong download result does not establish that your encoder can send a live stream reliably.
Choose bitrate by codec, resolution and frame rate
YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrate depends on the video codec as well as the resolution and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube Help guidance, current when accessed in 2026; they describe the feed sent to YouTube, not a guaranteed quality level for every viewer. YouTube transcodes incoming streams into multiple output formats. Pick the highest mode your connection can sustain stably, rather than maximizing the table values without regard to network conditions. | Resolution / frame rate | AV1 or H.265 minimum | AV1 or H.265 recommended | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2160p / 60 fps | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p / 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p / 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 24 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p / 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 15 Mbps | 7 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p / 60 fps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p / 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p / 60 fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p / 30 fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p / 30 fps | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p / 30 fps | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
For example, YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrate for 1080p at 60 fps is 17 Mbps; that is a target for YouTube’s incoming feed, not a substitute for checking that your outbound connection can sustain it with headroom. If you use a different codec, use its column rather than carrying over the H.264 number.
Other encoder settings YouTube specifies
- Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
- Video: H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1; progressive scan and square pixels; frame rates up to 60 fps.
- Rate control: Constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Two-second intervals are recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: AAC or MP3. YouTube’s listed stereo settings are 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Its listed 5.1 settings are 48 kHz and 384 kbps; 5.1 is supported only for AAC over RTMP/RTMPS.
- Color: Rec. 709 for SDR. YouTube recommends H.265 for HDR in this guidance; AV1 is not listed as supported for HDR.
Test before the event
A representative test can reveal problems that static screens or silent test feeds miss. YouTube recommends preparing in advance, checking the preview and monitoring stream health. Its streaming tips recommend preparing at least two hours before the event and starting the encoder 15 minutes before it.

- Configure the event and encoder early. Confirm the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, audio settings and stream destination.
- Run a representative test. Include motion and the audio sources you will actually use. This helps expose encoder load and source problems that a static image may not show.
- Check the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that picture and sound arrive as expected before beginning the public event.
- Monitor health and messages while live. Respond to encoder or stream-health warnings rather than assuming the configured settings are working correctly.
- Check the local recording. Verify that the archive is intact and continuing to grow. It can help distinguish a problem in the source or encoder from one arising after the feed leaves your computer.
- Test backup failover if you use a backup encoder. Stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet connection and confirm that the viewer player switches to the backup.
- Check the viewer experience. Confirm that the stream can be reached from the channel or watch page, including on mobile devices.
Diagnose blurry video, buffering and dropped frames
Picture looks soft, blocky or unstable
- Check the selected video mode and bitrate. Make sure resolution, frame rate and bitrate correspond to the codec’s row in YouTube’s table. If upload capacity fluctuates, a high target bitrate may make the feed less stable rather than clearer.
- Inspect encoder health and CPU load. Look for encoder errors and signs that the computer is struggling to process the selected settings.
- Review the local recording. If the same defect appears there, the issue is already present before YouTube receives the feed.
- Check the source. Inspect the camera or other video source for focus, framing and lighting issues, and verify the quality of audio and video routed into the encoder.
- Test outbound connectivity if the source and recording look healthy. If the connection test indicates a problem, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance advises contacting your internet service provider.
YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting guide recommends checking the source, encoder and connection. Buying a camera or other equipment only addresses a source-quality limitation; it does not resolve inadequate upload capacity or encoder errors.
Stream buffers, drops frames or disconnects
- Measure sustained upload capacity, not just download speed.
- Keep the total bitrate for primary and backup streams within available upload capacity, leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Account for other devices and people using the connection during the broadcast.
- If the feed remains unstable, lower the resolution, frame rate or bitrate to a mode the connection can sustain. This is an application of YouTube’s bandwidth guidance, not a guarantee that one adjustment will fix every cause.
- If tests point to an outbound connection problem, contact your ISP rather than assuming a different encoder setting will repair the connection.
Stream will not start
If you use third-party streaming software with a stream key, verify that the key in the encoder matches the one in YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder if needed. If you sign in to YouTube through third-party software without using a stream key, YouTube directs you to that software’s support team. See the troubleshooting guide.

Your recording looks fine, but viewers report trouble
Use encoder diagnostics and Live Control Room health messages to investigate. YouTube notes that reports from many viewers on different internet connections can point to the live encoder. Its transcoding provides multiple output formats for different devices and network conditions, but does not ensure identical playback for every viewer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Balance latency against playback stability
Latency is the delay between capture by the camera or encoder and appearance to viewers. Lower latency can make interaction feel more immediate, but may increase playback buffering. If the stream does not depend on real-time audience interaction, prioritizing stability over minimal delay may make more sense. YouTube says the 2160p (4K) option does not offer its low-latency setting; that mode is optimized for quality at normal latency. See Manage live stream settings and YouTube’s encoder settings.
