Use a live meeting tool when people need to join and talk; use live streaming software when you need to produce a feed for an audience that mostly watches. The workflows can overlap: Google Meet and Zoom document ways to stream meetings outward, but availability depends on account eligibility, permissions, and configuration.
What is the difference between video conferencing and live streaming?
| Question | Meeting-centered workflow | Broadcast-centered workflow |
|---|---|---|
| What is the audience doing? | Participants join a shared conversation and may speak, appear on camera, or present. | Viewers receive a produced feed and may interact through features such as chat or moderated Q&A. |
| Who controls what appears? | The host manages the meeting and participant experience. | A producer selects or curates the material sent to viewers, sometimes with an encoder or mixer workflow. |
| Where does it happen? | In a meeting or collaboration service; some plans can send the meeting to an external platform. | On a streaming platform or event destination, using a webcam, mobile device, or encoder. |
| What setup is typical? | Joining the meeting and using its built-in controls. | Potentially a separate encoder, production roles, channel connection, permissions, and optional audio/video equipment. |
The deciding question is not which category is universally better, but whether the audience needs to participate as meeting attendees or mainly watch a controlled program feed.
Can you livestream a video meeting to YouTube?
Yes, subject to the meeting service’s current eligibility and settings. Google documents streaming a Meet session to YouTube for listed Workspace editions: Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Education Plus, Teaching and Learning Upgrade, Workspace Individual, and qualifying Google One subscribers. The YouTube channel must be approved for live streaming and linked to the meeting. Depending on host management settings, only hosts and co-hosts—or people in the host’s organization—may start the stream. Google says the stream must be started from a computer, not a mobile device. A Meet-initiated YouTube stream cannot be paused, but it can be ended and restarted; it may also be uploaded to YouTube for later viewing. Check the current eligibility and controls in Google Meet’s YouTube streaming guidance.
Zoom likewise documents livestreaming meetings to selected destinations, including Facebook, YouTube, Twitch, and custom live-streaming services. Its help page lists Pro, Business, or Enterprise account access and account-owner or administrator privileges to enable the setting. Administrators can restrict which destinations are allowed. Confirm the account’s current plan and configuration before building an event around this option; see Zoom’s livestreaming meeting instructions.

When should you use a meeting tool, and when should you use streaming software?
Choose a meeting when participation is the point
- Attendees need to speak, show video, present, or collaborate in real time.
- The host needs meeting controls for participants rather than a fully curated broadcast feed.
- The audience is expected to join a room or collaboration service.
Choose a broadcast workflow when viewers mainly watch
- You need to control the program feed that reaches a larger viewing audience.
- People should interact as viewers—such as through chat or moderated Q&A—rather than join the production as meeting participants.
- You need a platform-oriented production setup, potentially with an encoder and designated production roles.
These are not mutually exclusive choices. A meeting can be the source of a broadcast, but streaming it outward does not turn every viewer into a meeting participant. Verify who can start the stream, where viewers will watch, and whether the account permits that destination.
What do you need to stream a conference or gaming event?
YouTube identifies mobile, webcam, encoder, and console as live-streaming methods. Its guidance describes encoder-based streaming as common for gameplay, sports, concerts, and conferences. An encoder workflow can involve hardware such as cameras, microphones, and preamps; those are possible production components, not requirements for every host. A simple event may need only a webcam or mobile device, while a more controlled program may justify dedicated production equipment. YouTube’s guide also describes horizontal and vertical dual streaming from Live Control Room: the vertical output is a center crop by default, with options to adjust layout. Check the current workflow and settings in YouTube’s live-streaming guide.

YouTube describes live streaming as a way to interact with an audience in real time through a video feed, chat, and more. For a conference, decide first whether attendees must speak or whether they will mostly watch; then choose the meeting, broadcast, or combined workflow that matches that role.
What about Microsoft Teams live events?
Do not treat legacy Teams live events as a default current choice. Microsoft states that Teams live events retired on June 30, 2026, and directs organizers toward the unified Teams events experience. Microsoft documents support through February 28, 2027 for events scheduled before the retirement date. The legacy workflow used organizer, producer, presenter, and attendee roles and could involve external hardware or software encoders. For lifecycle details, consult Microsoft’s Teams live events retirement guidance and verify the current events experience before scheduling.
