To add a chatbot to a YouTube live stream, make the stream public and live, then connect a bot such as StreamElements or Nightbot and grant it moderator access as instructed. After it joins, configure commands, scheduled messages, and spam filters in the bot’s dashboard. YouTube’s own moderation tools still work alongside either bot.
Before you connect a bot
- Have access to the YouTube channel and the bot service’s dashboard.
- Set the stream’s visibility to Public and start the broadcast. Both services’ YouTube instructions require a public, live stream before the bot can join.
- Keep YouTube Studio’s live chat controls available; a bot adds features but does not replace channel moderation.
Add StreamElements to YouTube Live
- Set your YouTube stream to public and go live. StreamElements says it cannot join a private or unlisted stream.
- In YouTube Studio, open Settings > Community.
- Under the moderator controls, add one of the StreamElements channel identifiers given in its setup guide: https://youtube.com/c/streamelements or https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjerlCIbLPQwSnYlClkjDXg.
- Open the live chat and select Live chat, not Top chat. StreamElements warns that Top chat may hide bot messages.
- If the bot does not appear, check that the stream is public and currently live, that you added the correct StreamElements channel, and that the broadcast appears live in the StreamElements dashboard.
Add Nightbot to YouTube Live
- Visit Nightbot and sign in with the account you intend to use for Nightbot. This opens its Control Panel.
- Click Join at the top right of the dashboard. Nightbot will display instructions for making it a moderator.
- Make the stream public and live, then follow those moderator instructions. Nightbot says it will only join a YouTube channel under those conditions because of YouTube API rate limits.
- Once Nightbot has joined, use the Control Panel to set up commands, timers, and filters.
Set up commands, timers, and spam controls
Commands
In StreamElements’ command dashboard, create a custom command by setting its name and response, then activate it. Its documented optional controls include aliases, cooldowns, loyalty-point costs, and conditions such as whether the stream is live. Commands can also be limited by user level, which helps reserve moderator actions for moderators.
Nightbot commands are configured in its Control Panel. Choose clear command names and concise responses that answer a likely viewer question, such as where to find the game’s rules or schedule.
Recurring messages
StreamElements timers let you set a recurring message and an online interval in minutes. Nightbot timers also have an interval and a chat-line threshold. Use them for information viewers may miss, and avoid scheduling messages so frequently that they crowd out conversation.

Spam filters
StreamElements documents filters and banned words. Nightbot documents filters for capitalization, links, symbols, and a custom blacklist. Review how each filter behaves before relying on it: an overly broad rule can catch legitimate viewer messages as well as spam.

Use YouTube’s built-in moderation too
YouTube Live provides controls that complement a chatbot. In YouTube Studio, channel owners can add or manage moderators, set blocked words, hold potentially inappropriate messages for review at Basic or Strict moderation levels, and enable slow mode. During a live chat, moderators can also delete a message, time out a user, or hide a user. These controls are useful when a bot misses context or when you want a person to review chat.
Troubleshoot a bot that will not join or respond
- The bot does not join: Confirm the stream is public and live. Both providers specify these as YouTube join requirements. For StreamElements, also confirm the moderator identifier and check whether the broadcast appears live in its dashboard.
- StreamElements appears absent: Switch the chat display from Top chat to Live chat; Top chat may hide its messages.
- A command does not work: In the bot dashboard, verify that the command is active, its name and response are configured, and any cooldown, user-level, or live-state condition permits it to run.
- A timer seems inactive: Check its interval and, for Nightbot, its chat-line threshold. A timer can be configured but not post until its conditions are met.
- Legitimate messages are filtered: Review the relevant blocked words, blacklist, or capitalization, link, and symbol rules; narrow the filter if it is catching ordinary chat.
